Housewives Urged To Save Waste Fats And Take To Meat Dealers Dealers To Pay Three Cents A Pound. Need For Fats Is Stressed An adequate supply of fats and oils is essential to winning a war and Transylvania county house wives and meat dealers have a desperately important job to do, according to a special release re ceived this week by Salvage Chair man Howard Wyatt. “The allied blockade, which shut off Germany’s imports of fats and oils, was a major factor in her being defeated in World War I,” the release stated. “In 1941, the United States im ported nearly two billion pounds of fats and oils, largely from the far east. Most of these sources are now in the hands of the Japs. It is imperative to us, as a nation, that we make up this loss and the salvaging of used cooking fats and greases offers our best opportu nity. “It has become desperately nec essary for every housewife to save and turn in to her meat dealer every possible ounce of used cook ing grease and for each meat deal er to do everything in his power to encourage his customers to do so,” it was stressed. The reason is because fats con tain glycerine and glycerine is a vital ingredient of smokeless pow der. The housewife, the meat dealer and the man behind the gun are a team. It is the urgent, patriotic duty of every housewife and every meat dealer to “pass the ammunition” in the form of waste kitchen fats, to make glyce rine, to make gunpow'der. It is pointed out that if every housewife in Brevard and America saved as little as a tablespoonful W. C. There are five meat dealers in the town and county who are ac cepting and paying for waste fats. These are Dixie Market, City Mar ket, Mitchem’s Market, Cash and Carry store and Carr Lumber com pany store. They are paying three cents per pound. Any kind of clean metal con tainer can be used to save fats. It doesn’t have to be a coffee or a shortening can. A fruit, vege table or soup can is perfectly all right.
