Mr. Twiggs left Wednesday for Atlanta, Ga., where he will be empolyed at an aircraft factory. Miss Bertie Ballard, of Ashe ville, is visiting this week with Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Nicholson. Miss Anne Morel has returned to spend the summer at her home in Brevard. Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Sieber announce the birth of a son, Peter Joseph, at Transylvania Com munity hospital on June 9th. Mrs. Mary Scott and Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Scott returned Tuesday from a visit of several days with relatives in Burnsville. Major Webster is attending this week in Rocky Mount a meeting of the grand chapter Eastern Star. He returned recently from Atlan ta, Ga., where he attended Emory University the past year, as a ministerial student. He is stopping this summer at the home of Sheriff and Mrs. Freeman Hayes. Dr. and Mrs. C. B. McFee have returned from Umatilla, Fla., and Greenville, S. C., where they spent the past several months. Miss Nathalie Dotterer arrived the past week from Charleston, S. F. Zachary. Miss Sue Jennings had as her guests Tuesday afternoon Misses Naomi Ashe and Thelma Middle ton, of Tuckaseigee. They were entertained with bird recordings and special music. Miss Thelma Middleton resigned her position in the physical lab oratory at Ecusta last week. She will spend the summer in Wil mington, N. C., and Charleston, S. C. She was graduated from Eastern Carolina Teachers college, Greenville, on June 4th. Dr. and Mrs. Thomas P. Bailey arrived the past week from Rollins College, Winter Park, Fla., to spend the summer in Brevard. They now have an apartment in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Wike. Miss Jean Bennett Is Honored At Duke Word has been received from Duke University that Miss Jean Bennett, of Brevard, has been placed on the dean’s list. LOCAL DEPARTMENT HAS BUSINESS SOCIAL MEETING The regular business and social meeting of the Local Department of the Methodist church was held in the ladies’ parlor of the church Tuesday night. HOLDEN PASSES Funeral Service Held At Dunn’s Rock Baptist Church Monday Funeral service was held last Monday afternoon at the Dunn’s Rock Baptist church for Mrs. Wil liam O. Holden, 60, who died at her home in Brevard the previous Saturday night, following a heart attack. Rev, S. F. McAuley, pas tor of the Second Baptist church, conducted the service. Interment was in the church cemetery. Surviving are the husband and seven children, including, Mrs. Ralph Whitmire, Mrs. Luther Gray, Miss Ethel Holden, Eugene M. Holden, Clarence Holden, Frank E. Holden and Luther M. Holden. A sister, Mrs. Willie Holden, of Brevard, also survives. Pallbearers were Buck Holden, Erwin Holden, James Holden, Frank Norris, Max Jackson and Burns Thomas. Those in charge of flowers were Roxie Milller, Lucy Holden, Louise Smith, Dorothy Holden, Lois Ward, Nan Allison and Ruth Holden. Mrs. Holden was a native of Transylvania county and a mem ber of Dunn’s Rock Baptist church. Osborne-Simpson funeral home had charge of arrangements. Mrs. Wood Appointed Insurance Agent Here Mrs. Edna Allen Wood, of Bre vard, has been appointed as a rep resentative of the Life of Virginia Insurance company in Transyl vania county, it was announced to day. It is believed that Mrs. Wood is the county’s first woman to serve in this capacity. She is now devoting full time to the work. Previously she has worked for | Schulmans. A Community Chest Proposal Is Adopted By Lions Directors In line with an editorial sug gestion of this newspaper, the directors of the Brevard Lions club Monday night voted to take the leadership in sponsoring a movement to emerge all civic and charity finance drives into an annual community chest pro gram. The directors met at the home of President Ed McMahan and agreed to ask other clubs and organizations in the town to co operate with them in forming a community chest committee. It was pointed out that such a move would save a lot of time on the part of solicitors and persons solicited for donations.
