Corporal Reid Says Prayers Of
People Helpful To The Soldiers
Temptations Not As Bad As
Some People Suspect,
He Asserts
“It does a guy good to know
that there are people back home
who are praying for his safe re
turn,” says Cpl. John B. Reid, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Avery Reid, in
a letter written in response to
a communication from Oak Grove
Baptist church, which was sent
to all men from the community
in the armed services of the United
States.
Corporal Reid enclosed in his
letter $5.00 to be used as the
church may see fit. The text of
his letter follows:
I was delighted to get the won
derfully encouraging letter and
know you all still remember me
and all the other boys in the ser
vice.
I got a lot out of-the letter, and
I’m sure all the other boys did
too. It does a guy good to know
that there are people back home
that are praying for his safe re
turn, but it does him more good
to know that tha church back home
is back of him.
We have many temptations here,
but it’s not as bad as some people
are inclined to believe. We have
everything for our own benefit
and good that it is possible for
Uncle Sam to provide. We have
our church here, but I admit, it
isn't like going to church back
home.
I am expecting to be home next
month on my first furlough and
I'm making it a date to be at
church the Sunday I'm there.

FARM QUESTIONS
AND ANSWERS
+------. ,
Question: How can I stop a ring
worm on my calf's neck?
Answer: Remove the scales by
the use of a stiff brush, soap and
water, says J. A. Arey, in charge
of Dairy Extension at N. C. State
College, and then paint the spot
with tincture of iodine.
Ring worm is a parasitic disease
and occurs on the calf’s head,
neck, shoulders and rump. The
hair comes out and a gray scaly
crust is formed over the bare sur
face. After the animals are treated
for the disease, the stalls should
be thoroughly cleaned and white
washed.
Question: Where can I get a
good publication on terracing?
Answer: The Agricultural Edi
tor at N. C. State College, Raleigh,
will send you a free copy of Ex
tension Circular No. 222, entitled
“Terracing To Reduce Soil Eros
ion.” This publication tells how
to construct a V-type drag and
outlines the progressive steps in
terrace construction. It also tells
how to construct terraces with
large terracing units.

Poison Flea Beetle
On Irish Potatoes
• Yields of potatoes in western
North Carolina will be greatly re
duced unless measures are taken
to control the potato flea beetle,
now threatening serious damage
to the crop, says Walter M. Ku
lash, assistant in the Department
of Entomology of the Agricultural
Experiment Station at State Col
lege.
He reports that the crop should
have been treated either by dust
ing or spraying at an earlier date
but that present prices of potatoes
warrant a fight on the flea beetle
now. For dusting, he recommends
a mixture of one part of cryolite
and three parts of talc. This mix
ture should be placed in a tight
drum together with a few smooth
river stones about the size of the
fist to help mix the materials
properly. Keep the drum tightly
covered and rotate for a few minu
tes to get a thorough mix.
Kulash recommends applications
of the dust mixture at weekly in
tervals until it is no longer pos
sible to use the equipment in the
field without damaging the plants
by running over them.
He recommends that growers,
who prefer spraying, use 2 pounds
of calcium arsenate in a 4-6-50
Bordeaux mixture in their weekly
applications.

John’s Counsel to Christians

HIGHLIGHTS ON THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON
By NEWMAN CAMPBELL
(The International Uniform
Lesson on the above topic for June
27 is II John and III John, the
Golden Text being III John 2, "Be
loved, I pray that in all things
thou mayest prosper and be in
health, even as thy soul prosper
ed.”)
OUR LESSON today consists of
two private letters written by
John—two of three contained in
the New Testament, the other be
ing by Paul. We do not know just
where these letters were written,
nor exactly what time, but it may
have been at Ephesus, where John
lived for the most part after
Jesus’ ascension, and the time
might be about A. D. 90-95.
These letters to good friends
give us a picture of the life of
these early Christian people and
somehow make them seem nearer
to us, not just some ancient people
whose joys and problems are far
away and utterly different from
our own.
The first letter is to the "elect
lady.’’ She is simply called that,
and no one knows who she was or
what her name was. Some have
called her Electa; others think her
name may have been Kyria, a
common Greek woman's name,
but we have no proof that either
name was hers, and will call her,
as John does, the "elect lady.”
The letter begins: "The elder
unto the elect lady and her chil
dren, whom I love in truth: and
not I only, but also all they that
have known the truth.”
Impressive Greeting
In our day of informality, the
greetings of these ancient people,
both when meeting on the road, or
when writing, is most impressive.
The salutations are also very
sweet and beautiful.
“Grace be with you, mercy, and
peace, from God the Father, and
from the Lord Jesus Christ, the
Son of the Father, in truth and
love,” John begins.
He tells her he has rejoiced
greatly that her children are
“walking in truth,” and then be
seeches her, “not as though I
write a new commandment unto
thee, but that which we had from
the beginning, that we love one
another.”
How many times in the New
Testament are we told to love one
another, and how sadly we fail to
obey this command.
Next John’s letter warns this
lady not to allow “a deceiver” to
enter her house nor even wish
him God speed, because that
might make her a "partaker of his
evil deeds.” We might apply this
to our lives by shunning evil
companions. \Ye all naturally imi
tate those with whom we are
closely associated. Not only do we
Timely Hints For
Farm Homemakers
By Ruth Current
It is saddening to read the an

find the appalling number of 31,
500 deaths due to home accidents.
Accidents are real enemies of the
home and most of them are caused
by thoughtlessness and careless
ness. Make your home a safe home
by taking care of the danger spots
which cause most accidents.

it much better, then, to choose

He concludes by saying that he
has many things to say, but would
not “write with paper and ink,” as
he hopes to see her and her fam
ily before long. The “paper” he
speaks of was Egyptian jrapyrus,.
and the ink was lamp black and
gall juice or soot and water. This
is the only time in the New Testa
ment where paper is mentioned.
Letter to Gaius
The second epistle was written
to a friend named Gaius. There
are four men by that name in the
New Testament—one a member
of the church at Corinth, a com
panion of Paul seized at Ephesus,
and a third a companion of Paul’s.
The one to whom John wrote this
letter was still another. John be
gins with a beautiful salutation:
“Beloved, I wish above all
things that thou mayest prosper
and be in health, even as thy soul
prospereth.”
John was sure that Gaius’ soul
was in health, for he says, “I have
no greater joy than to hear that
my children walk in truth.”
He then commends Gaius for his
faithful work. These preachers
and teachers of the early church
went from place to place in the
name of the Lord Jesus, preaching
the word. They were poor and had
to depend upon the hospitality of
other members of the church for
food and lodging.
Even among those first disciples
of the Master there were some
who were selfish and self-seeking.
It seems almost impossible that so
soon after Jesus’ passing they
would forget his life and teaching,
but so it was, as it is today. John
writes to Gaius of Diotrephes, who
was such a man. He wanted to
dominate the church, to "boss” it,
as we would say today. He had
forgotten Jesus’ injunction that
he "who would be greatest among
you, let him be your servant,”
and took • it upon himself to
say who should be received of
the congregation and who should
not, and worse still, spoke mali
ciously of John and others of the
faithful, refusing to receive them
and even casting them out of the
church. John wrote that he would
remember these things when he
visited the church.
Demetrius he spoke of warmly,
as a man who “hath good report
of all men, and of the truth itself.”
He concludes his letter:
“I trust I shall shortly see thee,
and we shall speak face to faca»
Peace be with thee. Our friends
salute thee. Greet the friends by
name.” gjt.
