Perry, Jr., Last Friday - # Brevard College Teacher Weds In Pretty Church Ceremony At Boone Miss Lillie Alene Brown, of High Point, head of the music de partment of Brevard College, be came the bride of Dr. H. B. Per ry, Jr., of Boone and Baltimore, Md., in a ceremony at the Boone Methodist church on Friday after noon, August 6, at 5 o'clock. Rev. O. L. Brown, father of the bride, officiated. The church was decorated with white gladioli, fern and evergreen, with five-branched candelabra bearing cathedral tapers. Miss Dorothy Jones, of Madi son, organist, played the wedding music. Miss Julia Owen, of Ashe ville, was soloist. The bride was given in mar riage by her great-uncle, Dr. B. B. Doughtery, of Boone. Miss Elizabeth Brown, of High Point, was her sister’s maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Miss Gertrude Perry, of Boone, sister of the bride groom, and Mrs. James I. Mizelle, of Independence, Va. Dr. H. B. Perry was his son’s best man. Ushers were Bernard Doughtery, Dr. W. C. Thomas and John Lester Brown, brother of the bride. Bride's Costume The bride’s dress was of white marquisette, fashioned with a round neckline and a deep yoke trimmed with a gathered ruffle of matching material. The long fitted bodice also was trimmed with a gathered ruffle and the bracelet-length sleeves of the gown were gathered slightly at the elbow. Her fingertip length veil of gathered bridal illusion was attached to an orange blossom crescent, and she carried a bouquet of white roses and baby’s breath, centered with an orchid. Immediately following the cere mony a reception was given by Mr. and Mrs. Brown, parents of the bride, on the lawn at the home of the bride’s grandmother, Mrs. D. D. Doughtery, for the bridal party and close relatives. Reception Given After the reception Dr. and Mrs. Perry left for a brief wedding trip. For traveling the bride wore a jungle brown traveling suit with matching accessories. On her shoulder she wore an orchid de tached from her bridal bouquet. At present the couple will make their home in Baltimore. Mrs. Perry is the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. 0. L. Brown of High Point. A graduate of Greensboro college with a bache lor of music degree, she has done post graduate work at the Uni versity of North Carolina and for the past year was head of the de partment of music at Brevard col lege. This summer she was a mem ber of Appalachian State Teach ers college at Boone. Dr. Perry, son of Dr. and Mrs. H. B. Perry of Boone, is a grad uate of Wake Forest college and the University of Maryland school of medicine. At present he is in terning at the Baltimore City hos pitals. Army Man Honored With Social Events Several events of a social na ture were given for Pfc. Rowell D. Bosse, of the army air base in New Orleans, La., while on his 15-day furlough here with his mother, Mrs. W. T. Bosse. Those entertaining were: Mr. and Mrs. D. F. Moore gave a supper, the guests at which in cluded members of the Moore and Bosse families, and Rev. and Mrs. B. W. Thomason. Charles Moore showed colored slides of wild flowers. Other guests in to see the pictures were Captain and Mrs. Richard H. Johnston and Miss Martha Sellers. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Poole enter tained with a supper, the guests being Rowell and his mother, Mr. and Mrs. Karl Bosse and Mrs. Donald Lee Moore Other events were a fish supper given by Mr. and Mrs. Harold Norwood for Rowell and his mother, and a supper given by Mrs. James J. Gray, the guests at which were Rowell and his mother and Mr. and "Mrs. Knox DeLong. AUXILIARY AND GUILD HAVE I MEETING WITH MRS. ALLISON j The August meeting of the Aux- j iliary and Guild of St. Philip’s' Episcopal church was held at the home of Mrs. J. M. Allison last Thursday afternoon. Twelve mem bers and three visitors were pres ent. Mrs. David Ward, president, was in charge of devotionals and business transactions. The pro gram was led by Mrs. Ward. Mrs. S. A. Bullock and Mrs. H. R. Bobst. who read articles pertain ing to missionary work in differ ent countries. At the meeting of the Guild, conducted by Mrs Harry Perry, final plans were made for a card party and food and gift sale to be held at Walnut Inn on August 17th. at 2:30 in the afternoon and at 8 o’clock in the evening. Refreshments were served dur ing the social period. GLEANERS CLASS HAS PICNIC AND MEETING AT LAKE SEGA Members of the Scripture Glean ers class of the First Baptist Sun day school enjoyed a picnic sup per and meeting at Lake Sega last Thursday evening at the home of the substitute teacher, Mrs. R. E. Lawrence. Swimming in the lake and the picnic supper were enjoyable fea tures of entertainment. At the business meeting, pre sided over by the president, Miss Rachel Hamlin, plans were made for the class enrollment and to take a basket to a member shut in. Mrs. Caldwell is secretary to the head of the educa tional department of the TV A at Andrews. Sgt. Caldwell is in the U. S. marine corps, stationed now at New River. Hunter, Jr., and Mrs. Lita Steppe entertained with a tavern party last Saturday eve ning at the home of Mrs. Hunter, honoring Miss Katherine English, bride-elect, whose marriage to Pfc. John Anderson, of Fort Jack son, S. C., will take place on Sep tember 4th. Decorations and entertainment were carried out in cabaret style. Roberson, of Candler, to Ensign William H. Hamrick, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Hamrick, of Ashe ville. The wedding will take place in the fall. Miss Roberson has been employ ed as secretary and chemist in the chemical laboratory of the Ecusta Paper corporation since August, 1940. Ensign Hamrick was called into active service in January, 1941, and for the past 27 months he has been located in the Panama Canal zone. Prior to entering the service, he was employed in the engineer ing department of radio station WWNC as a transmitter engineer. The engagement was announced at a party given by Mrs. John Reese Sledge at her home in Bre vard Friday evening. Miss Roberson greeted the guests at the door, and on arrival she pinned on each a corsage, on the ribbons of which were inscribed the names of the two contracting ; parties, announcing their engage ment. Miss Roberson’s mother also greeted the guests at the door. Mrs. Sledge was assisted by Mrs. James Mills, of Brevard, in serving an ice course. a color scheme in white and green was carried out in the dec orations and refreshments. A pro fusion of summer flowers in blend ing shades added to the attractive ness of the prevailing color note. Jones, of Brevard, have announced the en gagement of their niece, Miss Mary Malinda Hamrick, of Bre vard and Concord, to Bernhard Bjorn Christopherson, of Wash ington, D. C., and Superior, Wis. The wedding will take place in Concord on September 3rd. Miss Hamrick is a graduate of Brevard high school and of the Shelby Hospital School of Nur ing. For the past three years she has been assistant supervisor of the operating room at Cabarrus hospital in Concord. Mr. Christopherson received his training at Superior State college. He has been employed for several years as draftsman in the navy yard at Washington. AUGUST MEETINGS OF METHODIST CIRCLES Circles No. 1 and No. 3 of the Methodist church met in joint session last Thursday afternoon at the parsonage for the August meeting. Following devotionals led by the pastor. Rev. W. A. Jenkins, the two circles met in separate rooms for the business transac tions, and re assembled for re freshments together. Mrs. E. S. English, chairman, presided over the meeting of Circle No. 1, and Mrs. Cordia King, chairman of Circle No. 3, conducted routine business of that circle. Mrs. Jenkins was hostess at the meeting of Circle No. 1, and Mrs. J. S. Nicholson was hostess of the other circle. MRS. SLUDER HOSTESS AT MEETING OF CIRCLE II Mrs. H. A. Sluder was hostess t the August meeting of Circle No. 2 of the Methodist church, which met at her home last Thurs day afternoon. An interesting program pre ceded the business session. Miss Mary Sluder was devotional lead er. telling in an interesting and unique manner the story of Luke. Miss Carolyn Sluder and Miss Jeanette Austin rendered several piano and vocal selections. Included in the routine busi ness, presided over by the chair man, Mrs. J. F. Zachary, plans were made to provide flowers for the church each Sunday during August.
