Record Timber Sales Made In
National Forests Past Year
- -_____—
Nearly Two Million Dollars
Worth Sold. Big
Increase
Record breaking timber sale
business for National Forests in
the South during the fiscal year
just closed has been announced
by Joseph C. Kircher, Regional
Forester for the U. S. Forest Ser
vice. Nearly $2,000,000 in revenue
were returned to the U. S. Treasu
ry from the sale of timber and
other forest products.
“This revenue represented an
increase of 48 percent over '4142,
which was a year of increase in
itself,” Kircher said. “War de
mands for wood have increased
greatly the urgency of producing
as much timber as possible—tim
ber cut on a selective basis and
in accordance with good forestry.”
“Practically every bit of timber
cut and forest products sold went
to war industry,” Kircher added.
Revenue from the sale of forest
products on National Forest land
is returned to the Treasury of the
United States as dividend on the
public’s investment in the National
Forest system. Twenty-five per
cent of the total revenue is dis
tributed to the counties in which
the forests lie. in lieu of taxes on
publicly owned land. Some coun
ties in the South are receiving a
greater return from these National
Forest receipts than from similar
land in private ownership.
The Southern Region of the
National Forest system was estab
lished as such only in 1934. The
Arkansas National Forest land was
largely reserved from the public
domain. The land in other Nation
al Forests was bought for water
shed production, timber produc
tion, and as demonstration units
Grow Turnips For
Good Dairy Feed
Dairymen who have no silos can
produce from six to eight tons of
turnips per acre to take the place
of silage in the winter feeding of
their cows, says John A. Arey,
Extension Dairyman at State Col
lege.
According to Arey, the feeding
of 20 to 30 pounds of turnips per
head daily will materially increase
the milk production of dairy ani
mals.
He recommends that the turnips
be seeded early in August on low,
| fertile land which has received a
good coating of manure and 600
to 800 pounds of a complete, high
grade fertilizer. The purple top or
Pommeranian white globe are two
good varieties to plant.
Turnips and other root crops
are slightly laxative and tend to
keep the cow’s digestive tract in
good condition, thereby enabling
her to get more out of the other
feeds which she consumes.
in proper forest management.
Most of the land had been badly
cut over when purchased and it
has been necessary to provide ade
quate fire protection and stand
improvements to bring the land
back into productivity. The record
breaking achievement made by the
foresters in the past year’s timber
sales on Southern National For
ests ranks the Region second in
the nation lor value of timber
produced from National Forests.
The Pacific Northwest Region is
the only one to exceed the South
in National Forest timber sales
record.

The war along the Russian front
continues in decided favor of the
Red army, which, yesterday, was
reported barely 12 miles from the
great industrial center of Kharkov,
where they smashed into a rail
way town 45 miles east of Bry
ansk. The Russians were said to
have made general advances along
the entire 300-mile active front,
with 70 towns and villages taken
in the Kharkov area. At one rail
way station 250 German trucks
fully loaded were reported to
have been seized by the Russians.
The Allied forces, continuing to
smash the center of the German
line northwest of Mount Etna in
Sicily, drove Wednesday to with
in seven miles of battered Ran
dazzo, one of the enemy’s last de
fenses on the road to Messina from
central Sicily. The Nazi supply
line was cut by U. S. forces, and
the Germans were being driven
toward the funnel at Messina
where they were fiercely resisting.
In the Southwest Pacific war
ring zone, the American ground
forces tightened their grip yester
day on the only point where the
Japanese are holding out on New
Georgia island, with the Ameri
cans gaining a firmer hold in that
sector and scoring good advances
on the left flank.
