Orr, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Orr, of Brevard, has recently completed a course of training at an army air school, Harrisburg, Pa., and has been transferred to the army air base at Kissimee, Fla., where he is instructor at the base intelligence officer school. Ben Thomason, son of Rev. and Mrs. B. W. Thomason, of Brevard, last week volunteered for the Navy and is now stationed at Bain bridge, Maryland. Dr. Charles L. Newland, who is stationed at the army air base at Maxton, N. C., has been pro moted from a captain to major. Major Newland is in the medical corps and has been in service for over a year. Pvt. Clyde M. Huff, of the U. S. army at Campbell, Ky., has com posed some lines that he has ded icated to his wife and mother, which follow: “Long is the dis tance and hard is the road that McFEE TO BE HERE Chas. B. McFee, Jr., of Ashe ville, chairman of the membership committee for the Scottish Rite bodies will attend the regular communication of Dunn’s Rock lodge Thursday night at 8 o’clock for the purpose of securing ap plications from members to take the higher degrees in Masonry J this f^ll at the reunion to be held in Asheville beginning November 9th and ending on November 12th. Brewer, of Oakland, who has been in the army since last March, is now serving over seas in the anti-aircraft artillery. He took training at Fort Bliss, Texas. Pvt. James B. Pickelsimer, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Pickelsimer, of Brevard, has been awarded the army good conduct medal at Fort Sill, Okla., where he is a member of headquarters, service battalion, field artillery officer candidate school regiment, it has been learn ed here through the Fort Sill pub lic relations office. The medal is awarded for “fidelity through faith ful and exact performance of duty, efficiency, and behavior that de serves emulation.” In order to re ceive the good conduct medal, an enlisted man must serve three years in peace time or one year in wartime and be recommended by his commanding officer. Roscoe Alderman Is Missing In Action Mrs. Roscoe J. Alderman, of Brevard, was notified by the War Department last Thursday that her husband, St. Sgt. Roscoe J. Aider man, has been missing in action since August 17th. St. Sgt. Aider man has been in the European theatre of war. DEMONSTRATION CLUB OFFICERS AND LEADERS TO MEET HERE FRIDAY A meeting of all the officers and leaders of the Home Demonstra tion clubs will be held in the county agent’s office Friday at 2 o’clock for the purpose of com pleting reports on the canning, sewing and bond sales programs, Miss Teague announces. The resolution passed by the commissioners at their last meet ing, authorizing the sale of Mrs. Julia Galloway’s property in the Boyd township to Claude Davis was rescinded at the request of both parties and Mrs. Galloway agreed to pay up past due taxes and penalties against the proper ty, and to retain ownership. W. E. McLean, who has been charged with poll tax in two townships, was ordered to pay only one poll tax. A poll tax charge against P. M. Orr, who is 69 years of age, was cancelled, and a similar tax against O. S. Moore was also revoked. Commissioners Carl Allison and Willis Brittain attended the meet ing.
