D.A.R. Has First Fall
Meeting* And Names
New Committees
The first fall meeting of the
Waighstill Avery chapter of the
Daughters of the American Rev
olution was held on Monday after
noon at the home of Mrs. J. S.
Silversteen.
Mrs. C. L. Newland. regent,
presided. The pledge of allegiance
was led by Mrs. Silversteen. and
Mrs. J. H. West led in prayer.
The chapter voted to dispense
with the usual programs and to
work instead at the Red Cross
rooms.
The following committees were
appointed to serve the ensuing
year: Mrs. J. M. Allison, motion
pictures, advanced American mu
sic; Mrs. H. V. Smedberg, Ameri
can Indian, Real Daughters; Miss
Annie Jean Gash, Red Cross, cus

The following delegates were
appointed for the district meeting
to be held in Asheville on Septem
ber 28: Mrs. Newland, Mrs. Smed
berg, Mrs. Silversteen, Mrs. Bjerg.
The chapter voted to give SI.00
each to the motion picture fund
and the blood plasma fund. A
letter was read from the state
regent, stressing the importance
of each chapter buying war bonds
and aiding in all phases of war
work. It was decided to hold meet
ings each month.

Asheville. She is employed at
The Grill, in Brevard, and her
husband is in the U. S. army,
stationed at Los Angeles, Calif.
SARAH TAYLOR GUILD HAS
INTERESTING MEETING
The September meeting of the
Sarah Taylor Guild of the Metho
dist church was held last Thurs
day evening at the home of Mrs.
Horace DeBord, with Mrs. Ralph
Fisher as co-hostess.
Mrs. Goode Loftis was program
leader, telling of Christian work
ers in Cuba and Puerto Rico. Mrs.
Frank Kerber gave a report of
the zone meeting which she at
tended in Fletcher. Mrs. Fisher,
chairman, conducted the business
and led the devotionals.
Following refreshments served
during the social period, the socie
ty adjourned to meet in October
at the home of Mrs. C. B. Scott,
with Mrs. Mordecia Neely as co
hostess. and with Mrs. Kerber as
program leader.

ENJOYABLE MEETING
The Philathea class of the First
Baptist church met Monday even
ing at the home of Mrs. Hugh Hol
lifield. The business was in charge
of the president, Mrs. Roy McCall,
and the program leader was Miss
Marie Galloway.
A social hour and refreshments
were enpoyed following the meet
ing.
METHODIST SOCIETY TO
MEET THIS AFTERNOON
The September meeting of the
Women’s Society of Christian Ser
vice will be held this Thursday
afternoon at 3:30 o’clock in the
church parlor.
Mrs. Bobst Hostess At
Music Club Meeting
Mrs. Harry R. Bobst w§s hostess
to the members of the Music Lov
ers’ club at the first autumn meet
ing last Saturday afternoon at her
home in North Brevard.
Mrs. Bobst, president, presided,
and since this was the business
meeting of the year, no musical
program was presented.
Three new members were elect
ed to membership in the club,
and Mrs. Bobst was elected to
represent the club at the district
meeting to be held in Asheville
on October 20.
The president read a report
from the biennial meeting of the
National Federation of Music
clubs, which met in New York
City in May. Some of the inter
esting excerpts from this report
were that North Carolina took
first place in national music in
the home, and second in music in
international relations, and was
the only Southern state having a
nation-wide radio hook-up during
the American Festival of the Air.
Mrs. Bobst tendered her resig
nation as president of the club,
which was regretfully accepted.
Mrs. Karl Bosse was elected to
fill the vacancy, and Mrs. Edward
H. McMahan was elected secretary.
The hostess was assisted in serv
ing delicious refreshments by Mrs.
Keith Pooser and Mrs. Alez Kizer.

Weds Jonathan Mann
In Greenville, S. C.
Miss Rachel Arrowood, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin F. Ar
rowood, of Greenville and Brevard,
was married on September 4th to
Pvt. Jonathan D. Mann, of the
U. S. army medical corps, son of
Mr. and Mrs. John W. Mann, of
Brevard.
The bride wore a teal blue suit
with rose accessories. Her corsage
was of rosebuds and stephanotis.
The wedding had been schedul
ed to take place later this month
in Brevard, but the date was ad
vanced because of a change in the
bridegroom’s orders.
Mrs. Mann is a graduate of Bre
vard high school. Private Mann,
who also received his education
here, was employed by the Ecusta
Paper corporation before entering

GARDEN CLUB TO MEET
WITH MRS. MARTIN FRIDAY
The September meeting of the
Garden club will be held at the
home of Mrs. Lester Martin Friday
afternoon, with Mrs. John Max
well to be co-hostess.
The program will consist of the
showing of wild flower pictures
by Charles Moore.

MEET THIS AFTERNOON
The five circles of the First
Baptist church will have the Sep
tember meetings Thursday after
noon at 3:30 o’clock in the follow
ing homes of members: Circle No.
1 at the home of Mrs. J. B. Jones,
with Mrs. Curtis Kelley as pro
gram leader; Circle No. 2 with
Mrs. L. E. Bagwell; Circle No. 3
at the home of Mrs. J. M. Gaines;

OF MATHATASIAN CLUB
A business and social meeting
of the Mathatasian club was held
last Thursday afternoon at the
home of Mrs. Harry Sellers, in the
first fall meeting of the new club
year.
In the absence of the president,
Mrs. C. J. Goodwin, Mrs. Sellers,
retiring president, conducted the
meeting, which was devoted en
tirely to business.
The program for the year was
outlined by Mrs. Harold Nor-1
wood, chairman of the program
committee. This will consist of the
Reader’s Digest panel to be used
alternately with a study of “Our
Pacific Outposts.”
Following the business session
the hostess served refreshments.1
The club adjourned to meet on
September 23 at the home of Mrs.
J. B. Jones, with Mrs. Harold Nor
wood as program leader.
LAWN PARTY IS ENJOYABLE
OCCASION OF THE WEEK
Miss Mary McCrary' entertained
a group of friends with a lawn
party and watermelon slicing at
her home Wednesday evening. She
was assisted in the entertaining

FIRST FALL MEETING
The first meeting of the fall
club year was held last Thursday
afternoon at the home of Miss
Alma' Trowbridge, in a business
and social meeting.
The new president, Mrs. G. H.
Lyday, presided over the business
transactions, included in which
was the appointment of committee
chairmen for the year, as follows:

zenship; Mrs. Burt Loomis, inter
national relations; Mrs. Goode
Loftis, art; Mrs. B. D. Franklin,
public welfare; Mrs, J. F. Zachary,
American home; Miss Alma Trow

Rhyne, education; Mrs. J. E. Lof
tis, music; Mrs. W. M. Melton, war
service chairman.
Books were passed to the mem
bers by the book chairman, Mrs.
Loomis, and the year books were
distributed by the program chair
man, Mre. J. S. Nicholson. The
club voted to serve only light re
freshments at each meeting, and
to turn in to the treasury the
extra money that more expensive
refreshments would cost, for the

week, having repair work done
on their cottage.

Mrs. James Maxwell, who spent
sdme time with her daughter,
Mrs. Harvey English, in Boylston
while Mrs. Maxwell was ill, has
returned to her home here much
improved in health.

Mrs. Richard Hamilton, of Pleas
ant Grove section, Mr. and Mrs.

C., Mr. and Mrs. Otho Scott, of

Mr. and Mrs. John Reed and
daughter, Jewell, visited Mr. and
Mrs. Neal Hamilton on Little Ri
ver Sunday afternoon.
Mrs. Flora Pickelsimer spent
Sunday with her aunt, Mrs. La
grant Pickelsimer, who is ill at
her home on Little River.
Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Setzer and
son, Junior, were visitors here

Kitchen Sells Farm
To W. C. Callahan
E. H. Kitchen has sold 140 acres
of land and the home pldce in the
Gloucester section of Transylvania
county to W. C. Callahan, of Whit
tier.
Mr. Kitchen and family moved
from this county 14 years ago to
Candler, near Enka, but retained
his 186-acre farm, dwelling and
other buildings until his recent
sale to Mr. Callahan, who has
leased the place for some time.
Mr. Kitchen reserved 46 acres of
the farmland for his own use, in
the event he wishes to move back
to this county to make his home
at any time in the future.
