Local Couple Wed
In South Carolina
Last Thursday
Miss Clarice McCrary, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. McCrary,
of Brevard, was married to Lieut.
Z. Vance Jackson, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Glover Jackson, of Brevard,
on Thursday afternoon, Septem
ber 16, in Greenville, S. C.
The ceremony was performed by
Rev. J. D. Crain, pastor of the
Pendelton Street Baptist church,
at his home.
Lt. and Mrs. Jackson are both
graduates of Brevard high school.
Lt. Jackson, who has been in
the service of the U. S. army the
past year, is now a bombardier
in the air corps, stationed at Dy
ersburg, Tenn.
The couple left Friday for Dy
ersburg, where they will make
their home until Lt. Jackson is
transferred to another air base.
FIDELIS CLASS WILL MEET
THURSDAY NIGHT THIS WEEK
Attention is called to members
of the Fidelis class of the First
Baptist church that the September
meeting will be held this Thurs
day evening at 8 o’clock instead
of the usual time on Friday night.
The meeting will be held at the
home of Mrs. Walter Kaye, with
Mrs. Harold Runion as co-hostess,
and Mrs. H. E. Newbury in charge
of the program. The change in
date was made in order not to
conflict with the bond rally at
the high school on Friday night.

Announcement has been made
of the engagement of Miss Mary
Jean Fisher, daughter of Lt. and
Mrs. Henry Coleman Fisher, of
Asheville, to Lt. (jg) Earl Justice
Fowler, of the U. S. navy air corps,
son of Mrs. E. Z. Fowler, of Bre
vard, and the late Mr. Fowler.
The wedding date has not been
announced. :
INTERESTING PROGRAM
AT METHODIST MEETING
An interesting program on the
topic. "The Christian’s Task in
Cuba and Puerto Rico,” was the
main feature of the September
meeting of the Women’s Society of
Christian Service, which was held
in the parlor of the Methodist
church last Thursday afternoon.
Mrs. D. J. Luther, program lead
er. led the topic, and others dis
cussing different phases of mis
sion work in the two countries
were Mrs. J. E. Loftis, Mrs. J. S.
Nicholson, Mrs. Cordia King and
Mrs. W. A. Jenkins. Scripture
reading and the responsive read
ing were by Mrs. E. J. Coltrane.
Mrs. Coltrane, president, con
ducted routine business, during
which committee and circle re
ports were given, and Mrs. King
gave a report of the recent zone
meeting in Fletcher.

SEPTEMBER MEETINGS
OF BAPTIST CIRCLES
Mrs. L. E. Bagwell was hostess
| to the members of circle No. 2
| of the First Baptist church last
Thursday afternoon, with eleven
present and two visitors. The bu
siness session was conducted by
the chairman. Mrs. Walter Kay.
An interesting program on “High
j ways for Our God,"’ was led by
Mrs. Harold Runion. Others taking
part on the program were Mrs.
Thomason, Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Bag
well, Mr. Thomason and Mrs.
Link.
The meeting of circle No. 5 was
held at the home of Mrs. Excell
Lothery. Mrs. J. A. Crisp, chair
man, presided over routine busi
ness and was leader of the state
mission program, assisted by Mrs.
Ralph Parrish and Mrs. Lester
Marttn. The personal service for
the month of October will be work
by the members each Monday
night in the Red Cross room.
WEDNESDAY CLUB HEARS
PROGRAM ON POETRY
A program of interest on “Con
temporary Poetry’’ was heard at
the regular meeting of the Wed
nesday club, which was held on
the afternoon of September 15 at
the home of Mrs. R. H. Ramsey.
Sixteen members were present
and one guest, Mrs. Ludwig Straus.
The program was in charge of
Mrs. R. T. Kimzey.
The meeting opened with the
reading of the club collect by Mrs.
E. J. Coltrane, and the American’s
Creed and salute to the flag by
Mrs. J. S. Silversteen,
Mrs. Roy Long, president, con
ducted routine business. New
books for the year were passed.
Following the program, refresh
ments were served by the hostess,
after which the club adjourned to
meet in two weeks at the home of
Mrs. Coltrane, with the program
in charge of Mrs. Frank Jenkins.

Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Grimshawe,
of Brevard, have announced the
engagement of their daughter,
Miss Patricia Ernestine Grim
shawe, to William R. Lawson, Jr.,
AMM 1-c, of the U. S. navy, Pan
ama.
Miss Grimshawe, a popular
member of the younger set of
Brevard, is a graduate of Brevard
high school and Brevard college.
She is new employed as secretary
in the personnel department of
the Ecusta Paper corporation.
Mr. Lawson, son of Mr. and Mrs.
W. R. Lawson, of Raleigh, attend
ed Hugh Morrison high school, Ra
leigh. He has been in the navy
the past four years.
The wedding will take place in
the late fall.

Moore featured the meeting of the
Garden club last Friday afternoon
at the home of Mrs. Lester Mar
tin, with Mrs. John Maxwell as
co-hostess. Twenty members were
present and one visitor.
In the absence of the president,
Mrs. Julius Sader, routine busi
ness was conducted by Mrs. Earl
Bryant. The time of the meeting
was changed back to 3:30. Mrs. E.
H. McMahan, Mrs. T. E. Reid and
Mrs. S. R. Harrington were ap
pointed judges for the next meet
ing.
The following flower awards
were announced at this meeting:
Arrangement: Mrs. Harrington,
first, pink roses; Mrs. Maxwell,
second; cosmos: Mrs. E. R. Pen
dleton third, wild berries. Best
specimen, Mrs. Harrington, first,
radiance rose; Mrs. Ludwig Straus,
second, red dahlia; Mrs. Oliver
Orr, third, orange dahlia. The
judges were Mrs. ‘Coltrane, Mrs.
Bradford Allen and Mrs. J. C.
Wike.
Refreshments and a social pe
riod concluded the meeting.
The lower shell of the gopher
tortoise projects and is used as a
shovel in tunneling.

Mrs. R. D. Sparkman, of Day
tona Beach, Fla., has returned to
her home after being the house
guest in the Shamo home for the
past month.
Carl L. Osborn is recuperating
from an operation on his eye.
Mr. and Mrs. Don McCoy and
Mrs. Jasper Rhinehart, of Lake
Worth, Fla., are spending a few
weeks with Mrs. Golda Shamo.
Mrs. James Breedlove and baby,
of Bryson City, have been visit
ing her brother, Clarence Cochran,
and family the past week.
Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Young, of
Daytona Beach, Fla., have bought
a portion of the land from the
Hadley place and will build a new
home here after the war.
Mr. William Frady and family
moved back to Florida this week
after helping during the bean sea
son, and they will put in a winter
crop there.
Some species of rattlesnake are
able to swim in the ocean.
