Fortnightly Club Enjoys Special Treat At Meeting A special treat in the nature of a barbecue supper following the regular meeting of the Fortnightly club was enjoyed last Thursday af ternoon at the home of Mrs. G. H. Lyday. The supper was held on the lawn around the barbecue stand amid the natural beauty of growing shrubbery and trees. Mrs. Lyday, president, was in charge of business transactions. Mrs. W. M. Melton, bond sale chairman, reported that a final to tal of $6,250 worth of war bonds had been bought and sold by the club during the September drive. Mrs. Lyday was elected delegate to the district meeting to be held in Asheville on October 12. Mrs. Goode Loftis, Mrs. J. C. Wike and Mrs. Melton were appointed on the school attendance committee to consult with Superintendent Jones. Mrs. W. G. Henson was elected to substitute for Mrs. Cor dia King during her absence of several weeks. An interesting program on “When Doctors Are Rationed,” was led by Mrs. J. S. Nicholson. This was the second of the discus sions for the year on the general theme, “Blueprints for Tomor row.” Mrs. Henson read a brief sketch of the life of Mary Stewart, author of the club collect. BROWNIES HAVE FIRST MEETING OF TIIE FALL The Brownies, Girl Scout Troop, met at the Hut last Saturday af ternoon with a good attendance, opening the fall meetings, with Mrs. J. R. Sledge and Mrs. Nathan McMinn, leaders in charge. Well planned programs for the coming months were outlined. Miss Elizabeth Allison will take over the leadership during the fall and win ter. All girls between the ages of 7 and 10 are asked to join. Meetings will be held each Wed nesday afternoon at 3:45 at the Presbyterian church. LOCAL DEPARTMENT TO MEET TUESDAY EVENING The Local Department of the Methodist church will have the Oc tober meeting Tuesday night at 7:30 at the home of Mrs. Luther Aiken. Mrs. B. W. Local Couple Wed In South Carolina Mr. and Mrs. Carl Talley, of Penrose, have announced the mar riage of their daughter. Miss Mar jorie Talley, to Seaman Second Class George W. Bryson, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Bryson, of Bre vard. The wedding took place on Sun day. September 19, in Pickens, S. C. Mrs. Bryson is a graduate of Brevard high school and attend ed Brevard college. Mr. Bryson received his educa- i tion at Brevard and Oakland schools. Mrs. Bryson is with her parents at Penrose. Her husband is at Great Lakes, 111., awaiting his new assignment. Mitch Neeley With Cash & Carry Groc’y Mitch Neeley, well known citi zen of Transylvania county, has accepted a position with the Cash and Carry Super-Market here and began work Monday. Mr. Neeley has about 15 years’ experience in the grocery business and was for a number of years connected with the Carr Lumber Co. store at Pis gah Forest. Surgical Dressing Room Schedule Changed Here A change of schedule in the Red Cross surgical dressing room was announced today by Mrs. Edwin Happ. Effective Monday the room will be operated as follows: It will be open Monday, Wednesday and Fri day from 10 to 12 A. M.; 2 to 5 P. M. and 7:30 to 9:30 P. M. Production has increased a great deal during recent weeks and Mrs. Happ announces that they have over 36,000 bandages ready for shipment. Reception Given For New College Students All members of the freshman and pre-college classes were honor guests at a reception given at Bre vard College by members of the faculty and sophomore class last Thursday night. The guests were greeted by Miss Madge Finger, president of the student body, and were introduced to all members of the faculty. Pun ch and cookies were served. The college parlor in which the reception was held, was beautiful ly decorated with fall cut flowers. TRY TIMES WANT ADS Wednesday Club Has Program On Famous Women of the World A program of interest and in formation on the topic, “Famous Women of Yesterday and Today,” was the main feature of the regu lar meeting of the Wednesday club, which was held on the after noon of September 29 at the home of Mrs. A. H. Kizer. The program was in charge of Mrs. Frank Jenk ins. Routine business .was conducted by the president, Mrs. Roy Long, who urged that as many members as possible attend the district meeting to be held in Asheville on October 12. It was announced the Girl Scout council is planning a rally in the near future. Following refreshments served by the hostess, the club adjourned to meet on October 13 at the home of Mrs. R. W. Everett, with Mrs. F. P. Sledge as program leader. One honorary member, Mrs. Thom as Wiley, was present and two guests, Mrs. R. L. Johnson and Mrs. T. A. Bjerg. Galloway Weds Miss Green In S. C. BY T. C. HENDERSON Miss Marie Green, of near Sum ter, S. C., and A. D. Galloway, of this community were married at Pickens, S. C., on Wednsday of last week, September 29. Mrs. Galloway has been spending a while here with her aunt, Mrs. Bridges, of Florida, who has a summer home here. Mr. and Mrs. Galloway are spending their hon eymoon in South Carolina. After their return here, they will occupy the summer home of Mrs. Bridges. Mrs. John Rufty and Mrs. Jud son McCrary and son, Juddy, of Brevard, spent Sunday here with their mother, Mrs. L. E. Reece, and attended services at Oak Grove Baptist church. They returned to Brevard Sunday afternoon and were accompanied by Mrs. Reece who is expecting to spend the win ter with Mrs. McCrary in Brevard. Mrs. C. W. Henderson went to Oakland for a reunion of the Cash brothers and sisters. All the liv ing brothers and sisters of this family were present, the first time they had all been together for quite a number of years. The three sisters are Mrs. C. C. Hall of Lake Toxaway, Mrs. C. W. Henderson of the Quebec section and Mrs. Walter Hinkle of Montvale. The brothers are F. F. Cash of Ashe ville, L. E. Cash of Oakland and Jessee C. Cash of Montvale. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Galloway and son, Benny and Mrs. Delia Hall, of Brevard, spent Sunday with Mrs. Flarlow McCall. He was accompanied on i his return to camp by his wife and baby, who will sepend some time there. Pfc. Lee S. Robinson, who has been in service the past 17 mon ths, was given a discharge last week from the Desert training center in California. He is thfe son of S. E. Robinson and the late Mrs. Robinson. Rev. George Holcombe, of Mid dle Fork, was elected pastor of the Old Toxaway Baptist church the coming year. Rev. Elmus Barrett, of Rosman, is the resigning pastor. Sam Passmore of Davidson River, Frank McCall of Cherryfield and Carl Wike of Brevard. Mrs. W. C. Fisher and Mrs. El bert Whitmire and son Ted of Bre vard spent Sunday with Mrs. Mary Ann Miller. T. C. McCall, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. O. McCall, a graduate of Ros man high school, entered State College last year. After he had been there a little more than half the year, he was drafted for army service. On examination, he was turned down because of some phy sical defect. This year he has en tered Brevard College and is pleased with his work and delight ed with the excellency of his tea chers. But he has received anoth er call asking him to appear soon for another army examination. He does not object to going into the army, but says he would be pleas ed if he might be permitted to re main in Brevard College at least until the end of this school year.
