APPEAL IS HADE FOR MORE SCRAP Small Quantity Brought In Since Drive Was Resum ed, Pipkin Reports. Only a small quantity of scrap has been brought in since the Jun ior Commando scrap drive, spon sored by the local Junior chamber of commerce, was resumed two weeks ago, Paul Pipkin, who is in charge of the collection, said yes terday. Mr. Pipkin said he felt sure that there was still a large amount of scrap available in the community and he urged youths to gather it up and bring it in. Scrap may be brought to the school house be tween 2 and 4 o’clock Saturday af ternoon. Awards to indicate the amount of scrap brought in are still being made, Mr. Pipkin said. Youths may earn a sweater, cap, service stripe or plaque, he said, and he urged them to make an ex tra effort during the next two weeks, when the drive closes. A huge amount of scrap was brought in by local children be fore the drive suspended last sum mer and the need for it is as acute now as it was then Mr. Pipkin said. George Page and Bill Bangs, who attended a Western district Jaycee meeting at Gastonia last week-end, made a report at the meeting Tuesday evening. 79 HUNTERS BAG -FROM PAGE ONE Permits for squirrel hunting are issued at the checking stations at a cost of $1.00 each. Rufty Members of the Brevard Metho dist church school presented reso lutions before the Sunday school body last Sunday, expressing ap preciation for the services of J. E. Rufty, retiring superintendent, who served as general superintend ent, the past 15 years. The resolutions, read by Mrs. Oliver Orr, are as follows: “We, the members of the Brevard Methodist Church school, wish to express our appreciation and grati tude to our retiring superintend ent, Mr. J. R. Rufty. Mr. Rufty has served as general superintend ent of our school for the past fif teen years, and has at all times been faithful in his duty, untiring in his efforts, earnest and unselfish in the giving of his time. We re gret that he will not be able to continue as our superintendent; but we feel assured that whatever work he may be called upon to do, he will still give his best, and we most heartily wish him suc cess.” RIDING DEVICES - FROM PAGE ONE - The Lions share of the proceeds during the engagement here will be devoted solely to the sight con servation campaign, of which Lion John Rufty is in charge. The town waived license and provided a lot near Brevard college. “Sight conservation is the major activity of our club,” Mr. Tran tham said, “and I feel that by pat ronizing these devices the people of Brevard can have some whole some amusement and at the same time help in a worthy cause. Lion members contribute regularly to a fund to correct defects of vision and have glasses fitted for child ren who need them, but this fund is not adequate and the board of directors decided weeks ago to en gage the Lee devices if it could be arranged.” CASH & CARRY SUPER MARKET SHOP IN OUR STORE WITH CONFIDENCE We are complying with community ceiling prices. Dr. Dudley said that over 80 percent of the school children in spected in the county so far were in need of some form of correc tion. The average for the whole state is 85 percent, he pointed out. “Our children then an htttir off than those in many other coun ties and states,” Dr. C. N. Sisk, health officer declared. “The main reason for the difference is that this county and state are meeting the problem through the Oral Hy giene division and the dental pro fession, with the broadest dental program in the country.” “The results can be seen in the comparative figures, Dr. Dudley agreed and added, “but we still feel that we have barely scratch ed the surface.” Dental clinics are to be con tinued most of this month.
