Rosman News MRS. JORDAN WHITMIRE, Correspondent SINGING CONVENTION SUN. The Fifth Sunday county sing , ing convention will be held at the court house in Brevard next Sun day beginning at 10 o’clock. Pres ident W. L. Harmon, of Rosman, will preside, and he extends an invitation to all county singers to attend. Other singers to be pres ent are as follows: W. Lee Higgins, of Chattanooga; Friendly Five and Carolina Quartet, of Asheville; Drake sisters, of Hendersonville; Carolina Ladies’ Quartet, of Green ville, S. C.; Harper Quartet, of Wil liamston, S. C., and the Lewis trio, of Easley S. C. HAD NARROW ESCAPE James Edward, 20-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Hen derson, had a very narrow escape from death Thursday of last week. The child climbed into a chair and then on top of a table reach ing a box of “nerve” tablets. When found by the mother eight tablets were missing. The child could not be awakem ed from sleep for several hours and was removed to the Transyl vania community hospital for treatment. He is recovering nicely. MORGAN INFANT PASSES Funeral services were held Fri day for the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Buren Morgan, of the Middle Fork section. Burial was in the Middle Fork cemetery. PERSONAL NEWS Mrs. Fred Duckett returned here Thursday from Topeka, Kansas, where she had spent several weeks with her husband, St. Sgt. Fred Duckett, who left last week for foreign service. Mrs. Duckett left Sunday for Shallotte to resume her duties as teacher in Shallotte elementary school. Mrs. Beatrice Galloway and son, Charles, of Brevard, spent the week-end visiting Mrs. Sarah Gal loway. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Harkelroads and grandson, Bennie Cassell, spent the week-end at Azalea vis iting the latter’s sister, Mrs. Geo. Stephens, and Mr. Stephens. Mrs. Tom Lyday is reported quite ill at her home here. Pfc. A. P. Bell, Jr., of Camp Shanks, N. Y. spent a short fur lough here visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Bell, last week. Jack Fitzgerald, of Moore Gen eral hospital, visited Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Moore Friday. Sgt. J. C. Cassell, Jr., of U. S. army stationed in Texas, arrived Monday to spend a furlough here i with his wife and parents. Fred Powell of Key West, Fla., is spending a few days visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. K. Pow ell. Mrs. Melvin Dutton returned home last week having undergone an operation at General hospital in Greenville, S. C. Mrs. H. G. Stophel and daughter and Miss Delitha Morrison spent the week-end in Greenville, S. C., visiting Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Hunt er. Cpl. D. S. Winchester, of Fort Jackson, spent the week-end at Calvert visiting his wife and daughter and mother, Mrs. Leo Winchester. Pvt. William Taft Owen, of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., is spending a 14-day furlough here visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Owen. Mrs. Grover Woodard and chil dren visited Mrs. John Reid at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gus Bag well in Brevard Sunday. Mrs. Bagwell was called to Norfolk, Va., J to be with her son, Chief Petty Officer Charles Reid, who was re cently injured in an accident. Rev. Vasco Manley and daugh ter, Vivian Barnett, of Alto, Ga., spent last week here visiting rela tives and friends. J. W. Winchester, of near Pick ens, visited his son, D. H. Win chester, and Mrs. Winchester on Tuesday. Rev. and Mrs. F. A. Rains and son, Austin, Rev. and Mrs. George Holcomb and two children spent Sunday near Jocassee, S. C., and attended church service at Mount Carmel church. Mr. and Mrs. Clate Owen and daughter, of Pickens, S. C., were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Owen. Pvt. Alfred Owen is reported ill at a hospital in Florida. Pvt. Carl Ricker of Louisiana and Mrs. Ricker and son, of Ashe-! ville, visited friends here last week. Guy Mull, of the merchant ma rine, left Monday for Charleston, S. C., having spent several days with his wife at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank McCall. Miss Verona Fisher left Satur day for Enka, where she has ac cepted employment. Miss Fisher has lived with her grandmother, Mrs. Lee R. Fisher, for the past year. Mr. and Mrs. Coy Fisher and daughter, Myma, of Pisgah Forest, were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Fisher and Mrs. Lee R. Fisher. Mrs. Thomas Mornson returned last week from St. Petersburg, Fla. Mrs. Morrison is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Ernest Moore, and Mr. Moore. Little Thomas Edward Moore, grandson of Mrs., Morrison, returned to the home of his par ents, having spent several weeks in FldHda. FODDER STACK By Mrs. Golda Shame A Hallowe’en carnival will be held at Penrose school Friday ev ening at 7:30 o’clock. The main features will be string music, vo cal selections, fortune telling, bin go, cake walks and a grab bag. Refreshments will be sold by la dies of the community club. The public is invited. Word has been received of the death of Mrs. J. C. Rhinehart on Oct. 16 at Lake Worth, Fla. Mrs. Rhinehart was seriously stricken while here and her husband was sent for and they left here on Oct. 7. She passed away a week later. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Cochran (nee Mason) left last week for their winter home at Lake Worth, Fla. They bought a summer home near Arden. Mrs. Golda Shamo returned last Thursday from a 10-day stay at her former home, Edgewood, 111., where she left her sister much better. On the last Sunday a birth day family dinner was given in hon or of Mrs. Shamo. En route home, she passed through Rushville, Ind., and saw Wendell Willkie and his 1.000 acres of farm land. Two years of high school or business school training and good average health will qualify any woman for service in the Women’s Reserve. Should a recruit not have any specialized type of training or busi ness experience, the Navy may find her fitted for some special ized training in a Navy training school.
