Honor Guest At
Lovely Tea Event
Mrs. F. P. Sledge and daughter,
Mrs. Roy Kanipe, were hostesses
at their home Tuesday afternoon
from four to six o’clock at a lovely
tea, entertaining in honor of Mrs.
James H. Sledge, recent bride.
Receiving the guests at the door
were Mrs. F. P. Sledge, Mrs.
James H. Sledge, Miss Lillian
Powell and Mrs. Kanipe. Each
wore afternoon dresses of pastel
colors with matching corsage.
Mrs. E. 0. Roland and Mrs. Ed
Cantrell assisted in serving.
Autumn leaves and other sug
gestions of the season were used
in the decorations. Guests regis
tered in the bride’s book.
WEDNESDAY CLUB MET
WITH MRS. POOSER 27th
The Brevard Wednesday club
met October 27th at the home of
Mrs. Keith Pooser, with 15 mem
bers present and two substitutes
for the afternoon — Mrs. Ward
Harrison for Mrs. Lehman Kapp,
and Mrs. Madison for Mrs. Ashby
Johnson.
Mrs. E. J. Coltrane led the
American’s Creed and salute to the
flag, followed by the club collect.
The club expressed regret over
the resignation of Mrs. Otis Mar
shall. Routine business was con
ducted by the president, Mrs. Roy
Long. The Girl Scout chairman
reported the need of furniture for
the Scout room.
The program on “The Negro’s
Contribution to American Life,”
was given by Miss Annie Jean
Gash, followed by a reading, “The
Creation,” by James Weldon
Thomas, rendered by Miss Wylma
Pooser, in a most pleasing man
ner.
Refreshments and a delightful
social hour followed the program,
after which the club adjourned
to meet November 10 at the home
of Mrs. Alex Kizer, who will also
be program leader, on the topic,
“Alaska, America’s Scandinavia.”

MEET THURSDAY AFTERNOON
Three circles of the Methodist
church will have the November
meetings this afternoon at 3:30
o’clock in the following places:
Circles No. 1 and 2 at the college
West Hall, with Miss Dulcie Hayes
and Miss Lucile Smith as hostess
es. The meeting of Circle No. 3
will be at the home of Mrs. D. J.
Luther. Circle No. 4, the night
circle of young people, will meet
at the home of Mrs. Nathan Mc
Minn at 8 o’clock.
Announce Marriage
In S. C. On Saturday
Announcement has been made
of the marriage of Miss Anne Mc
Clure, of Franklin, to St. Sgt.
James L. L. Curry, Jr., nephew of
Mr. and Mrs. F. M. McCall, of
Brevard.
The wedding took place in Pick
ens, S. C., Saturday afternoon, Oc
tober 30, at 3 o’clock, with Prob
ate Judge E. A. Lewis officiating.
Mr. and Mrs. Curry both attend
ed Western Carolina Teachers
College.
St. Sgt. Curry and Mrs. Curry
are spending a few days in Brev
ard at the McCall home. The
former will return Saturday to
Camp Davis, where he is in the
coast artillery anti-aircraft. His
wife has been accepted by the
WAVES and will enter service
about the middle of November.

Methodist church will have the
November meeting this evening
at 8 o’clock at the home of Mrs.
Ernest Tilson, with Mrs. Goode

MEET THURSDAY P.M.
The November meeting of the
Women’s Missionary society of the
First Baptist church will be held
this Thursday afternoon at 3:30
o’clock in the church parlor. This
will be an important meeting and
all members are urged to attend.

Birthday Event Is
Enjoyable Occasion
The birthday of Mrs. R. F. Mock,
last Sunday, was celebrated by
her in many enjoyable ways. Mrs.
Mock has been in declining health
for several years and has been
confined to her bed the past eight
months.
Friends called during the after
noon, and the day was otherwise
made happy for Mrs. Mock by the
receipt of many cards, birthday
greetings, a varied assortment of
gifts, and four long-distance tele
phone calls from friends and rela
tives. A sister-in-law, Mrs. E. E.
Roberts, of Candler, made her a
pleasant surprise birthday visit.
Mrs. Mock is unable to see to
read or to distinguish persons,
but she is always cheerful and
enjoys the frequent visits from
her many friends. She makes her
home with her daughter, Mrs.
John Reese Sledge.
HALLOWE’EN PARTY IS
ENJOYABLE OCCASION
Jean Pipkin and Stanford Har
din entertained with a Hallowe’en
party last Thursday evening at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Pip
kin.
The party was held on the lawrt,
which was gaily decorated with
Jack-o-lanters, pumpkins and oth
er suggestions of the Hallowe’en
idea. Games were enjoyed, and
refreshments in keeping with the
occasion were served. Many of
the guests wore costumes.

MRS. TILSON HOSTESS AT
MATHATASIAN CLUB MEET
Mrs. E. F. Tilson was hostess at
the regular meeting of the Matha
tasian club, which was held at
her home last Thursday afternoon.
Mrs. C. J. Goodwin, president,
presided over business transac
tions, included in which was the
making of plans for selling war
bonds and stamps on Saturday.
The year’s project was discussed,
and the club decided that the
members wmuld work in the Red
Cross room on the fourth Tuesday,
either in the afternoon or at night.
Mrs. Oliver Orr and Mrs. J. B.
Jones were appointed to investi
gate the possibilities of a plan for
encouraging attendance at Sun
day school.
Mrs. Harold Norwood, program
leader, discussed the topic, “Our
Northern Outposts—Alaska and
the Aleutians.” J
’ The meeting concluded with re
freshments and a social period.
Two former members were pres
ent, Mrs. Ralph Zachary and Mrs.
Fred Holt.

TO MEET THURSDAY 4th
The four circles of the Presby
terian church will meet this after
noon and night for the regular
November meetings. Circle No, 1
will meet at the home of Mrs. E.
E. Vassey; Circle No. 2 with Mrs.
Paul Baker; Circle No. 3 with Mrs.
Henrietta Sprouse, all at 3:30
o’clock. The night circle will meet
at the home of Mrs M. M. Feaster

HEARS PEACE PROGRAM
A peace program of interest and
information featured the regular
meeting of the Fortnightly club,
which was held last Thursday af
ternoon at the home of Mrs. J. F.
Zachary.
Rev. W. A. Jenkins discussed
the topic, “Responsibility of the
Church in Winning the Peace,”
bringing out the thought that post
war peace must be a just and
durable peace motivated by
Christianity, with the general wel
fare of all nations the chief goal
to be attained. Mr. Jenkins substi
tuted on the program for Mrs.
Cordia King, who is out of town
for some time.
Routine business was in charge
of the president, Mrs. G. H. Ly
day. Mrs. Paul Baker was welcom
ed as a new member.
Refreshments and a social half
hour were enjoyed at conclusion
of the program.

Miss Mary Allison, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Allison, form
erly of Pisgah Forest, but now liv
ing in Broad Creek, Va., was win
ner of the Broad Creek beauty
contest, for which she was award
ed a $25 prize. She was crowned
“Miss Broad Creek.” She is a
student at Broad Creek higl^
school.

.'and Stanley Allison, of Pisgah
Forest, and a granddaughter of
the late Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Al

These monthly clinics have been
held in the Gloucester Lumber
company building, and arrange
ments have just been completed
for the new quarters. Special at
tention is given to maternal and
infant care.

LEADERS COURSE
Course To Be Given At Hen
dersonville. District Com
mittee Meets
A scout leaders training course
for Transylvania and Henderson
counties will be held at Hender
sonville on November 14 and 21,
E. H. McMahan, chairman of the
Transylvania district, announces.
At a meeting of the local dis
trict committee, held last Thurs-i
day night, it was announced that1
the new Scout troop at Pisgah
Forest that is being sponsored by
the Presbyterian church is now in
full operation and ready for in
stallation. *
It was also urged that a troop
be formed at Rosman as soon as
possible.
Reports from the different
troops indicated that progress is
being made. The air scout patrol!
of troop 1 has volunteered to fight
forest fires on the watershed as a
public service.
Plans were also made for the
Scouts to give a special program
at the Scout hut in the near fu
ture and all parents will be invit
ed to attend.
At the next meeting of the com
mittee, officers for next year will
be elected. Jack Trantham was
appointed chairman of a nomina
ting committee.
Rev. W. A. Jenkins is commis
sioner of this district. Assistant
Scout Executive W. C. Wall at
tended the meeting here.

Several people from this com
munity attended the singing at
Brevard last Sunday.
A wedding dinner was given in
honor of Mr. and Mrs. Juston
Morgan at their home on Sun
day. They had as their guests
on Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Vess
Galloway.
Little Ina Jane Raines is much
better after an illness at the home
of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse I
Raines.
Misses Wave and Madge Brooks
were guests last week of Miss Inez
and Allenby Chapman. The latter
spent Saturday night at Rosman
with Miss Vera Mae Powell.
“Uncle” Dee Morgan was din
j ner guest Sunday of Rev. and Mrs.
N. H. Chapman.
The farmers of the community
have almost finished gathering
their corn, and all report good
crops.

FOR COUNTY REDUCED
Transylvania county’s tire quota
for the month of November has
| been reduced again and it is an
j ticipated that the allotted number
will not be nearly adequate
enough to take care of eligible ap
plications.
The passenger tire quota is as
follows: grade 1, 33; grade 3, 37
and tubes, 32. New truck tires, 34
and tubes 34.
The auto quota is 1, bicycles 2;
wood and coal stoves, 81; cooking
stoves, wood and coal, 8; oil cook

CHURCH IS REPAIRED
Repair and remodeling of Oak
Grove Methodist church that has
| been in progress for some time,
has been completed and the
church is now debt free, it was
announced by James Dickson,
Sunday school superintendent.
The cost of the work is estimated
to be around $1,000, which was
received through individual and
other donations and partly from
the Duke Endowment. Mr. Dick
son, in behalf of the church, ex
presses thanks to all those who
helped financially and other ways
in making this needed work pos
sible.
