Who Am I? I am more powerful than the combined armies of the world. I have destroyed more men than all the wars of the nations. I am more deadly than bullets and I have wrecked more homes than the mightiest of siege guns. I steal, in the United States alone, over five billion dollars each year. I spare no one, and I find my victims among the rich and poor alike, the young and old, the strong and weak. Widows and orphans know me. 1 loom up to such proportions that 1 cast my shadow over every field of labor, from the turning of the grind stone to the moving of every railroad train. I massacre thousands upon thousands of wage-earners a year. I lurk in unseen places, and do most of my work silently. You are warned against me, but you heed not. 1 am relentless. I am everywhere—in the house, on the streets, in the fac tory, at railroad crossings, and on the sea. I bring sickness, degradation and death, and yet few seek to avoid me. I destroy, crush, or maim. I give nothing, but take all. 1 am your worst enemy. I am CARELESSNESS. AMERICANS SHUDDERED A FEW WEEKS AGO WHEN IT WAS AN NOUNCED THAT IN THE SUCCESSFUL ASSAULT ON TARAWA IS LAND, SPECK OF SAND AND CORAL ROCK IN THE GILBERTS, OVER A THOUSAND MARINES WERE SLAIN. BUT WITH CHARAC TERISTIC DETERMINATION THE MARINES PERSISTED AND TOOK THE ISLAND, AND IN SO DOING ADDED NEW LAURELS TO THE GLORIOUS RECORD OF THE U. S. “SOLDIERS OF THE SEA.” THE LOSS OF LIFE ON TARAWA WAS UNEXPECTEDLY HIGH INAS MUCH AS THE ISLAND HAD BEEN SUBJECTED TO A FURIOUS BOMBARDMENT, BOTH FROM THE AIR AND THE SEA. THREE DAYS WERE CONSUMED IN THE TARAWA ATTACK. DUR ING FOUR DAYS—ANY FOUR DAYS—IN THE U. S. IN THE YEAR 1943 A NUMBER OF PEOPLE EQUAL TO MARINE FATALITIES AT TARAWA LOST THEIR LIVES THROUGH ACCIDENTS, MOSTLY PREVENTABLE. THUS WE SEE THAT HERE IN THE U. S. WE HAVE A SINISTER AND IMPLACABLE ENEMY ... CARELESSNESS... TO COMBAT AT ALL TIMES. IN THIS BATTLE EVERYONE IS ON THE FIRING LINE, SO TO SPEAK, AND IT IS FOR THE INDIVID UAL TO SAY HOW HE SHALL CONDUCT HIMSELF!
