SENSE AND NONSENSE By Madrie Galloway Flash! Oh, yea, I saw that spar kle come into everyone’s eyes, but I’m afraid I’ve gotcha fooled this time. Because this isn’t Walter Winchell’s flashy column, but a danger signal that the girls should heed. It appears to me that the math students had better study their lessons. You know detention hall awaits those who don’t. I have also heard that it pays to get to the home room on time or pay the pen alty of 15 minutes in the detention hall. If any peculiar sounds are heard in the future, don’t be alarmed. It’ll just be a certain pair of rock steps crashing after years of ill treatment from Jean H. and Boice W. P. S. There’s a “fox chase” go ing on between those two and Boice is in front, ha! (Jean, I told you about blabbing that big mouth off the other night.) Hey, who’s the cute couple swinging up Church street? Poor Henry! His neck’s gonna be as long We All Have A Part In This War.... Vet’s back the boys who are fighting for us! Pvt. Mancel E. Essential to the morale of the boys of R. H. S.!!! Girls and noth ing to do. Junior O.’s new song is “Will I Believe My Heart or . . . You?” But from the looks of things, I think he’s gonna believe Mildred Crunkleton because she’s another one of those “Pistol Packin’ Ma mas.” By the way, Crunk, congrat ulations on the wonderful way you put your part over in the junior play. Gosh! Would you look at those freshmen go!! Dot W., Jean O. and Patsy W. are all making “Home runs” with the boys. They’d better watch out, ’cause these senior girls have that “grab ’em look” in their eyes. Bye, bye, readers, gotta hit the road to dream ... eh ... I mean geometry. The War Food Administration has estimated that if only a third of our national food waste in homes could be prevented it would add 6 to 8 percent to our total food supply. GLANCING BACK AT BREVARD -4 Taken from the files of The Sylvan Valley News, beginning 1895. ---- (From the file of Sept. 1906) Within 20 minutes after the theft was reported at Toxaway Inn, officers had located two ne groes, Daniel and Janie Bowen and had them under arrest. About $100 worth of stolen property was found in two trunks in the negroes’ home, while one of the trunks, which they left at Toxaway, was opened and many of the stolen articles were recovered. Bowen and wife worked at the laundry at the Inn, and it is believed they have been taking goods the past several weeks, and that they wait ed until they had all they thought they could get away with and went to Asheville, where the arrest was made. The couple put in a plea of guilty and are now in jail await ing the next term of court. Mrs. L. B. Houston, of Greenville, is visiting in Brevard this week. Mrs. G. W. Summey and chil dren, of Jonesville, S. C., are visit ing relatives here for two weeks. We learn with pleasure that J. F. Hays has been elected a member of the board of directors of the Blue Ridge National Bank of Ashe ville. Mr. Hays has many friends in Transylvania county who will be pleased to learn that he has the confidence of the business men in our mountain metropolis. Roscoe Cartwright, of Knox ville, Term., is visiting his cousins, Eva and Gertrude Loftis. It is seldom that we are called upon to record so many accidents in one week as have been report ed to us. Last Saturday night Miss Tener, of Chestnut Hill, started for her home in a buggy, accom panied by her brother. The night was so dark that no objects were discernible and they had scarcely got beyond the electric lights on Caldwell street when they ran into King & Allison’s livery carriage that was returning from John Duckworth’s. A wheel was demol ished, the shafts were broken and other damage was done to the vehicle but the occupants were un harmed. Then on Saturday King & Allison had the misfortune to drive a horse into a yellow jac ket’s nest, and the animal was so severely stung by the vicious in sects that it died in less than an hour. On the same day, a horse elonging to W. H. Duckworth be came entangled in a barb wire ence and was terribly lacerated. It took a physician three hours to titch the torn cuticle, but it is now said the horse will live. On Sunday, a horse belonging to Thos. H. Shipman was hitched in the rear of the Baptist church when Mrs. Goodson’s honey bees attack ed it. It required a heroic fight to drive the bees off and several who assisted were so badly stung that they did not return to church. Prompt medical assistance saved the life of the horse. John Bishop, who received a broken rib in the bee fight, having been struck in the side by the frantic horse, has been disabled since that time. Then to cap it all, a cow belong ing to John Wilson, of the Pen rose section, got in the way of the train Tuesday night, causing the engine to get off the track and resulted in killing the cow. Whose ill-luck was it to cause all these mishaps in one short week? Mrs. John F. Henry has return ed from Louisville, Ky., where she has been visiting this summer and is once more occupying her beauti ful home here. WANTED! Country hams, will pay 45c a pound; must be lean.
