Donald Jenkins, of Camp Lee, Va., is spending a few days of his furlough here with relatives and friends. He was accompanied to Brevard by his wife, who has been in Virginia with her husband. Mrs. Lawrence Holt, Jr., expects to return to Raleigh this week, af ter visiting Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Holt here for several days. Her husband, L. A. Holt, Jr., seaman, second class, is at Camp Parks, Calif. Mrs. C. L. Newland and two chil dren, Mary Jane and Joanne, are expected to arrive in a few days from Rochester, Minn., where they have been for several months with Major Newland, who has been tak ing advanced training at the Mayo Brothers clinic. Mrs. Newland and children will spend the holi days here with her sisters, Misses Bill and Jennie Aiken. Miss Lillian Zachary, teacher in the Kannapolis primary school, I is expected to arrive Saturday to spend the Christmas vacation here with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. J. F. Zachary. Mr. and Mrs. Doyce E. Bracken announce the birth of a son, Chas. Delbert, on December 2. Mr. and Mrs. Roland Whitmire and Mr. Rush Whitmire, of Ashe ville, spent Sunday with their fa ther, Mr. T. W. Whitmire. Lt. and Mrs. R. L. May are expected to arrive in Brevard to day for a 15-day furlough with the latter’s parents, Dr. and Mrs. Carl Hardin. They have been at Coral Gables, Fla., where Lt. May was promoted to the rank of lieuten ant at the army air corps naviga tion school. He is navigator for the Pan-American Airways Inc. Mrs. May will remain here for some time with her parents. mr. joraan expects to leave Saturday for Washington, D. C., where he will spend the !'hristmas holidays with his two daughters, Mrs. R. K. Clarke and Mrs. Clifford S. King. M. Melton and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Smathers. Mrs. Mack Lee has returned to her home here after undergoing a serious operation at an Ashe ville hospital. Her husband, who has been in overseas service a year, is somewhere in England and is also confined, in a hospital there. Mrs. Donald Jenkins has been ill with flu in Transylvania Com munity hospital the past few days, but is reported to be improving. Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy W’allace visited friends here the past week end. The former is in the navy, stationed at Norfolk, Va., and Mrs. Wallace is making her home in Chattanooga Tetrn., for the dura tion. Mr. A. K. Lewis and family, of Greenville, were Sunday visitors with relatives and friends here. Mr. and Mrs. O. Duclos and daughter, Betty Je&n, were Ashe ville visitors on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Cannon, of the Cannon-Helten Piano company, of Asheville,, were business visitors in Brevard Monday. Mrs. came l. Dorsett returnea last Saturday to her home in Asheville, after a week’s stay in Brevard. Mrs. L. W. Bonnell and Miss Mollie McCall were Asheville vis itors on Saturday. Bishop has completed the course in the avia tion mechanics school at Gulfport, Miss., and has been transferred tc Santa'Monica, Calif., for advanced factory training. Holtzclaw, of Litth River, in a ceremony at the hom< I of Rev. C. E. Blythe, at Blantyre Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 8th, at 2 o’clock. Rev, Mr. Blythe per formed the ceremony. S. Sergt. Holtzclaw is in the field artillery of the U. S. army, sta tioned now at Camp Pickett, Va. He is home now on a 15-day fur lough. Mrs. Holtzclaw plans to join her husband in Virginia the first of the year. GROUP WORKS AT RED CROSS AND HAS BUSINESS MEET The December meeting of the D. A. R. was in the nature of a two-hour working by the mem bers at the Red Cross work room Monday afternoon from 2 to 4 o’clock, followed by a business session of the chapter at the home of Mrs. J. H. West. Mrs. J. M. Alliron, regent, con ducted routine business, which was preceded by the pledge of allegiance to the flag led by Miss Annie Jean Gash, and the Lord’s prayer led by Mrs. West. The program and social feature are being dispensed with now, and instead the members work at the Red Cross room for two hours on the regular business meeting days, the second Mondays. Brother of County Man Died Last Mon. Funeral service was held Wed nesday afternoon at Rocky Bot tom, S. C., for George Legree Gil strop, 34, who died in a Greenville, S. C., hospital Monday night. Rev. Clarence Haynes ami Rev. Her bert Newton conducted the ser vice. Interment was in the Rocky Bottom cemetery. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Gilstrop, of Pick ens, S.
