Armfield Here On Friday Brevard Couple Marry In Pretty Ceremony At Baptist Pastorium A pretty home wedding was solemnized at the pastorium of the Brevard First Baptist church Friday afternoon, December 17, at 3 o’clock, when Mrs. Mary Os borne Paxton, daughter of Mrs. Madge O. Wilkins, of Brevard, and the late C. P. Wilkins, became the bride of Ira Burton Armfield, of Brevard. The pastor, Rev. B. W. Thoma son, officiated, in the presence of a few relatives and close friends. The bride wore a blue crepe suit, with black hat and finger tip veil and accessories in black. Her corsage was of pink roses. Following the ceremony the couple left for a short wedding trip, after which they returned to Brevard, where they are making their home at 222 King street. Mrs. Armfield is secretary in the personnel department of the Ecusta Paper corporation, which position she has held since the establishment of the plant here nearly five years ago. Mr. Armfield is business man ager of The Transylvania Times, having held this position the past year. He is a native of South Caro lina, where he operated newspa pers for a number of years, and engaged in newspaper work ex tensively in other states. He is a graduate of The Citadel, and came to Brevard from New Albany, Miss, on January' 2 of this year. LOCAL DEPARTMENT HAS CHRISTMAS PARTY AND EXCHANGE OF GIFTS A Christmas party and gift exchange were enjoyable features of the December meeting of the Local Department of the Metho dist church, which was held in the recreation room of the church Tuesday night. Mrs. C. J. Hen dricks, Mrs. Burt Loomis and Mrs. Roscoe Nicholson were hostesses of the social part of the meeting. Mrs. E. J. Coltrane was in charge of the program and led in the various games. The gifts brought by the members were sold and the Mary Eleanor Smith Weds Lieut. Burwell In Asheville 20th Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Nelson Word have announced the marri age of their daughter, Mary El eanor Smith, to I,.t. John Wirt Ran dall Burwell, of the United States Navy, Monday, December 20, at the First Presbyterian Church of Asheville. Mrs. Burwell is a graduate of Grove Park School, Asheville, St Cathern, Richmond, Va., Gunston Hall, Washington, D. C., and Kath ern Gibbs Secretarial School in New York. Lt. Burwell is the son of Elliott H. Burwell, of Baltimore, and Annapolis and the late Mrs. Bur well. He is a graduate of the 1941 class of Annapolis and is now stationed there. Garden Club Hears Christmas Program The Christmas theme was em phasized throughout the meeting of the Garden club at its Decem ber meeting, which was held last Friday afternoon in the home of I Mrs. Walter Straus, with Mrs. H. E. Newbury as co-hostess. A talk on “Christmas in a War torn World,” was the main fea ture, given by R. H. Ramsey, who discussed the timely topic in a most comprehensive and able man ner, according to expressions heard from many of those present. Mrs. E. R. Pendleton gave in an interesting manner, “The Legend of the Christmas Rose.” The seasonal theme was further carried out in the Christmas ex hibits and decorations of green ery, candles and other suggestions, and in the refreshments served. In the flower awards, Mrs. Oli ver Orr was given first for best Christmas arrangement, and Mrs. Ludwig Straus second award. The proceeds added to the treasury of the organization. Mrs. A. R. Gillespie, chairman, conducted routine business. Is In The WAVES | Virginia Huskamp, above, is yeoman third class in the WAVES, stationed now at the naval barracks in New Orleans, La. She was recently transferred from Cedar Falls, la., where she took her basic training. She has | been in service four months. She is the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Huskamp, of Brevard. Former Brevard Girl Honored At College Miss Mary Louise Whitmire, formerly of Brevard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Whitmire, of Asheville, has been chosen by campus election to appear in the May Court for the traditional May I festival next spring at Queens col j lege, Charlotte, it has been an nounced here. Jones, of Cedar Mountain, became the bride of S. Sgt. George Her bert Stinson, Jr., of the Greenville, S. C., air base, son of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Stinson, of Cincinnati, in the Cedar Mountain chapel Sun day afternoon, December 19, at 5:30 o’clock. Rev. B. W. Thomason, pastor of the Brevard First Baptist church, officiated in the presence of rela tives and friends. Mrs. Melvin Gillespie played the nuptial music, and Mrs. Nat Townsend, both of Brevard, was soloist. The bride was given in marriage by her father, and the bridegroom’s father was his best man. The two brothers of the bride, Claude Jones and Pvt. Earle Jones, were ushers. The bride’s sister, Mrs. Curtis Lane, was matron of honor. The bridesmaids were Miss Mary Jane Jones, niece of the bride, and Mrs. Ray Sieve, sister of the bride groom. Ring bearers were Frieda Jones and Anne Wickliffe. The bride wore a dress of air way blue crepe, with a sequin and marquisette yoke and bracelet length sleeves. She carried a white Testament marked by a pur ple orchid. Her only ornament was a platinum pin set with sap phires, gift of the bridegroom. The attendants wore costumes in pink, fuchsia and black, and their corsages were of talisman roses. Immediately following the cere mony, a dinner was held at the home of the bride’s parents. The couple will spend the holi days in Cincinnati with the bride groom’s parents, after which they will make their home in Green ville. Mrs. Stinson is a graduate of Western Carolina Teachers Col lege, Cullowhee. At present she is business and industrial secretary and recreational director of the Greenville Y. W. C. A. Staff Sergeant Stinson was edu cated in the city schools of Cin cinnati and at a business college there. Wed In Pretty Church Ceremony Sunday In Hendersonville A pretty wedding was held in the Hendersonville Methodist church last Sunday afternoon, De cember 19, at 3 o’clock, when Miss Elizabeth Johnsqn, daughter of Mrs. Glover Johnson, of Hender sonville, was united in matrimony to Private George Nicholson, of the U. S. Army air forces, son of Mrs. W. P. Bane, of Henderson ville. The pastor, Rev. C. F. Smathers, performed the ceremony. The bride entered, unattended, on the arm of her brother, Manuel Johnson, of Highlands, The bride wore a street length dress of white flannel, with acces sories in brown. Nichol son, of Orlando, Fla., formerly Brevard residents, have announced the marriage of their daughter, Miss Nancy Anne Nicholson, to Alfred Frances Dorner, flight of ficer of the U. S. Army air forces, Orlando, Fla. The wedding took place at the army air base chapel in Orlando on Saturday afternoon December 18, at 5 o’clock. The bride is a native of Bre vard, but moved to Florida with her parents a number of years ago. Catholic Sodality Has Christmas Party St. Ann’s Catholic Ladies’ So dality met at the home of Mrs. Fritz Brauer Tuesday evening, for a business and social meeting. Following transaction of routine business, Christmas hymns were sung and the opening of the grab bag of gifts was enjoyed. The prize was won by Mrs. James Bren nan. Refreshments were served by the hostess. Those present were: Mrs. James Brennan, Mrs. A. M. Ream, Mrs. L. Faucher, Mrs. James Dunne, Mrs. E. E. Fraser, Mrs. Charles Sieber, Miss Emmi Neuberger, Mrs. Peter Leyh, Mrs. Robert Kappers . was cap - shape fashioned of white and brown feathers, with a brown veil. Her corsage was of red roses and baby’s breath. Before the ceremony, an ar rangement of organ melodies was rendered by Miss Kate Dotson. “Because” and “I Love Thee,” were sung by Miss Dorothy Foster. The traditional wedding marches were used as the processional and recessional. Mrs. Nicholson was educated in the public schools of Henderson ville, and was employed by the Brownlee real estate agency, Hen dersonville. For the past three years she has been employed at the Ecusta Paper corporation as assistant to Mr. Peter Eberle. The couple left immediately aft er the ceremony for a short trip through Western North Carolina. They will reside in Greensboro, where Private Nicholson is sta tioned.
