A GOOD NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION FOR EVERYONE Work, Play, Live and Drive Safely SW SAFE OFF-THE "JOB, TOO Qkl SAFI WAY TO MARK POISON IP THEY MUST BE YOUR ME0ICN6 $1 The bathroom is a good place for close shaves but not the kind this chap has just had. That’s poi son he has in his handl But he got a break. He detected the poison in time. Last year, ac cording to the National Safety Council, about 1,700 persons weren’t so lucky at home. They died because they took the poison. If they had known and used a few simple precautions they might be alive today and going about their business, most of them help ing to win the war. But they’re dead and more will die the same way this year if they aren’t care ful. The best way for you to protect yourself and your family is to keep poisons entirely separate from medicines and foods. Chil dren have mistaken lye for sugar and died for the error. If you must keep poisons in the medicine cabinet, the cabinet should be kept locked, at least until the children are old enough to know the danger of poisons. For the safety not only of chil dren but also of older members of the family, poisons should be clearly labeled. In addition the bottle should be “marked” in such a way that it will always be easily identified—even in the dark. Pins stuck in the cork, as shown at the top of the cartoon, will warn the user that contents are deadly. This simple device will keep you and your family safe. He’s trying to land without break ing his neck. We hope he has luck, but his chances aren’t too good. The National Safety Council tells us that 30,500 persons were killed in home accidents last year. These men, women and children were killed in many ways, but half of the deaths were caused by falls. Falls, like many home acci dents, are often the fault of some body besides the victim. Children must be taught to pick up their playthings when they are through playing with them. Adults can set a good example by leav ing nothing around, particularly on stairs and steps, that might cause someone to fall. Falls are caused by grease or milk or water not wiped up from the kitchen floor, soap in bath tubs, icy walks, broken steps, porches without handrails, dark hallways, makeshift ladders, un anchored rugs and poorly lighted stairs cluttered with mops, buck ets, or rubbish. Home accidents represent a shameful human waste—a danger ous waste during an all-out war. You can help reduce this toll by making sure that neither you nor members of your family will be injured or killed as a result of your carelessness. It is the patri otic duty of every member of your family to do the same.
