Birthday Mrs. Anthony Trantham enter tained at her home last Saturday evening at 7 o’clock with a formal dinner, honoring her daughter, Beverly Trantham, on the occasion of her 11th birthday anniversary. A pink and white color motif was carried out in the decorations and in the course dinner served. The dining table was centered with gladioli in the prevailing colors and burning pink candles in crys tal holders. Games, supervised by Ann Zacn army, were played following the dinner. The opening of the lovely birthday gifts afforded much en joyment. Indoor pictures of - the group were taken by Mrs. Tran tham. Mrs. Preston Taylor, of Bel mont, sister-in-law of Mrs. Tran tham, assisted in serving and en tertaining. Fourteen little girls, all attired in formal dress of harmonizing pastel shades, were present to cele brate the happy birthday event with Beverly. Guests were: Joanne Newland, Bessie Ann Allison, Betsy Brit tain, Mary Alice Hollifield, Mar garet Davis, Jane Fletcher, Jean Brown, Hilda Norwood, Mary Carolyn Notchstein, Ann Taylor, of Belmont, cousin of Beverly, Peggy Keels, of McColl, S. C., niece of Mrs. Ernest Tilson, Ann Zachary and Caroline Davis. 50 Enroll At Camp Transylvania For Sacred Music School Approximately 50 church choir directors, organists and religious leaders from a number of southern states are attending a 10-day school of sacred music that opened Wed nesday at the Transylvania Music School-Camp, Director James Christian Pfohl announces. States represented in the enroll ment include Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, North and South Carolina and Virginia. The camp has a large staff of in structors for the school and they are Director Pfohl, Earl Berg, of Davidson college; Mrs. Earl Berg, Davidson; Dean Robert Reuter, Flora-MacDonald college and sum mer organist at Duke university; Mrs. J. K. Pfohl, of Winston-Sa lem, president of the North Caro lina Federation of Music; Miss Vir ginia Prunty, Mrs. A. J. McKalvay, of Charlotte. Bishop J. K. Miss Lois Frazier, Miss Ruth Wil son and Miss Margaret Ruggles were hostesses. The room was attractively dec orated with summer flowers. Games were played, and refresh ments of ice cream and cake were served during the afternoon. A tray of gifts was brought in, the opening of which afforded much pleasure. About 25 faculty members and other guests were present, includ ing Miss Alice Amon, of Greens boro, president of the alumni as sociation of the college. Business Club Hears Talk By Mr. Pangle The Brevard Business and Pro fessional Women’s club, at the regular dinner meeting last Thurs day evening, heard Prof. M. G. Pangle, of the Brevard college faculty, discuss the charter of the San Francisco conference, which proved interesting and informa tive. The meeting was held at the Presbyterian Hut and was attend ed by 18 members and several guests, including Mr. and Mrs. Pangle. The out of town guests were Miss Margaret Amon, of Greensboro, guest of Miss Lois Frazier, and Miss Claudia Harrell and Mrs. Eldred Harrell, of Wash ington, D. C., guests of Mrs. Mil dred Scott. Following the dinner, the busi ness session was held, including the reports of committees and new business of the club. METHODIST CIRCLES TO MEET THIS THURSDAY The August meeting of the Lau ra Miller circle will be held this afternoon at 3:30 at the Methodist church parlor, with Mrs. J. B. Pickelsimer as hostess. The meet ing of the Julia Trowbridge circle will be held at the home of Mrs. E. S. English at 3:30. TREMOR WAS FELT HERE The earth tremor that shook sections of the nation last Thurs day morning was felt by a number of local people. Mrs. Tell Brown stated that she was awakened at 6:30 o’clock. She stated that she felt the entire jail here tremble and that the dishes in the cabinet rattled. Other per sons also reported having felt the tremor. Merchant’s will: “I want six of my creditors for pall bearers; they have carried me for so long, they may as well finish the job.” Fidelis Class Has Interesting Meeting An interesting meeting of the Fidelis class of the First Baptist church was held last Friday eve ning at the home of Mrs. Walter Duckworth with Mrs. Arthur Mc crary as co-hostess. Devotionals were led by Mrs. Ralph Duckworth, on the theme, “The Life That Pleases God.” Mrs! Lester Martin, president, conduct ed routine business. It was report ed that the class had bought eight bonds for the church building fund. Mrs. J. E. Rufty was in charge of games and contests and an en joyable quiz on the life of Dorcas. Contest prize winners were Mrs. Julian Glazener, Mrs. Joe Poole and Mrs. Jimmy King. A social hour and refreshments concluded the meeting. BAPTIST WMS WILL HAVE MEETING THURSDAY P. M. The August meeting of the W. M. S. of the First Baptist church will be held this Thursday after noon at the church at 3:30. The program will be in charge of Cir cle No. 4, with Mrs. J. B. King as leader, on the topic, “Facing the Needs in Our Own Country.” The executive board meeting will be held at 3 o’clock at the church. Several More Cases Tried Before Court Adjourned Last Week The July term of Transylvania county superior court adjourned last Thursday afternoon after hav ing been in session for four days. Buren Morgan, who was found guilty of assaulting Carl Galloway with a deadly weapon was sen tenced to serve 12 months on the roads. Harry Owen, charged with as saulting Spaulding McIntosh, Jr , was taxed with the cost of court and prayer for judgment was con tinued. Walter Sheilds was fined $50 and cost for reckless driving and given a suspended sentence. Four divorces were granted as follows: R. W. Sigmon against Ver na Mae Sigmon, Iona Galloway against Clarence Galloway, Charlie W. Field against Mary Field and Josey Galloway against Charles Galloway. The case of Iola Albright against Brevard college was non-suited and the plaintiff was taxed wtih the cost. Permission was granted for W M. Settles, who is suing R. B. Tyler company, to file an amended com plaint within 30 days. Strong Machine Room Team Still Undefeated, Having Won 13 Straight Must Purchase Auto Use Stamp At Once Purchase of the new auto use stamp for 1945-’46 is now past due and should be obtained at once at the deputy collector’s office here or from the post office, Dewey Gravely, deputy collector, has an nounced. The law provides a fine of $25.00 or 30 days or both upon conviction of the violation of this law. “In the next few days I will check all motorists in order to see that they comply with this law,” Mr. Gravely said. SOME MISUNDERSTANDING A batch of soldiers were out for their first drill period. The ser geant had given the order: “Left leg, raise!” One fellow timidly raised his right leg. Control Is Now In Second Place With Maintenance And Pulping Tied The Machine Room is making quite a record in the Ecusta base ball league this season. So far this strong team has not lost a single game and has won thirteen straight. Control has moved up into sec ond place, while Maintenance and Pulping are following close behind, each having won 4 and lost 9. In the games last Monday, Main tenance defeated Pulping 13 to 11, while Machine Room won over Control 21 to 8. Batteries for the games were: Maintenance, New bury and Landreth; Pulping, White and Allison; Machine Room, Case and Fisher and Control, Com and Wingate. The season is well past the half way mark.
