SP©RT PAGE Edited By John I. Anderson Rambling With The Sports Editor TOURNEY WINNERS . . . Chris Rogers was the big man on the golf course here last Sunday afternoon and won first prize in the blind bogey tournament. Edgar Loftis was second place winner, and Pete Wright again shot the best score of the day with an 83. * * * BASEBALL . . . The Ecusta team stands a good chance of get ting back in second place in the Western North Carolina Industrial league Saturday afternoon. The local outfit will meet the Green Riv er Mills team on the Ecusta field, and should Ecusta win and Bea con Mills lose, Alexander’s boys will again take over the number two position in the league. By the way, Hazelwood is still on top with 13 wins and no losses. * * * HIGH BOWLERS . . . Shuford Cagle was the high ten pin bowler on the local Centennial Alleys here last week with a 208 score. In the women’s division, Jane Fisher rolled 149. Brisco Anders rolled a 199 duck pin score and Frances Baughn had 154 to be the highest woman duck pin bowler last week. * * * j AUTO AWARD . . . Asheville fans last Friday night presented ^ Manager Bill Sayles of the Tourist team a brand new Ford car as proof of their good faith in him. The youthful manager has endeared himself to the hearts of the Asheville fans by the good manner in which he has gone about giving Asheville a winning baseball club | for her first season in the new Tri-State league. Things have not been honey and cream for Sayles in his first year as manager of an organized baseball club. He was much like an escapee from the halls of higher learning with his sheepskin tucked under his arm when he first donned his managerial uniform in Ashe ville. He had been through the Branch Rickey school of managers, and he knew' his baseball, but the question was whether he knew how to teach others w'hat he himself had learned, and whether all of the strategy pounded into him during his years in baseball could be applied in practice. The results speak for themselves. Players have come and gone as Sayles went about the business of weeding out those who did not fit into his organization, and bringing in those who w'ould give his Tourists the power and playing ability necessary to win ball games. These changes were not always acceptable to the bleacherites— sometimes they thought he was making a mistake—but things al ways turned out in such a manner as to prove that Skipper Sayles had learned his baseball lessons well and knew what he was doing.
