Over $100 Raised At "Messiah" Concert For Christmas Cheer Of Needy Families, To Be Annually More Than 600 Persons At tended Event Here Last Sunday Night More than $100 will be turned 'Over to the Transylvania county welfare department for spreading Christmas cheer to needy families •this holiday season, as a result of the presentation of Handel’s “Mes siah" in the high school auditor ium last Sunday. The community chorus, compos ed of 81 local singers, was under the direction of Prof. DeWitt P. Miller, and the orchestra, also composed of local talent, was di rected by Harold T. Casterton. Prof. Miller was responsible for formation of the community chor us, which was made up of rep resentatives from all the church choirs in town, and other local singers. The orchestra was made up of members of the Ecusta band, When you think of prescriptions, think of VARNERS—Adv. and the Brevard college band. It is hoped that the event will be come an annual one, Prof. Miller said. Soloists Listed Approximately 600 people heard the presentation of Handel’s stir ring oratorio here. Soloists were Miss Sarah Kornegay, Miss Pen nington, Mrs. Edith Bobst, Mrs. Mildred Townsend, Phil R. John son, DeWitt P. Miller, Gordon l Sprott, and Lon Vance. The various churches dispensed with their regular services for the evening, in order that the “Mes siah” might be a union service, and the ministers took part on the program. It is a custom that pro ceeds from the oratorio be used for charitable purposes, and Mr. Miller stated that the proceeds have been turned over to Mrs. Dora Patton of the county welfare department, in order that the spirit of Christmas may enter the homes of several needy families here. It is possible that influenza may occur this year throughout the country, Mrs. Paul Lollis, county public health nurse, pointed out, and the vaccine has proved very effective in combat ing the disease among members of the armed forces during World War II. In connection with the vaccine the following facts are to be kept in mind: one dose for the older child or adult is sufficient. Full immunity response is obtained by 10 days and lasts at least 4 months, and probably about one year. Younger children are given smaller doses and so may be given a second dose to get good response. As this vaccine is grown on the growing chick embryo, persons sensitive to eggs can take it only after skin testing to avoid severe reactions, it was stated. School children whose parents wish them to have the vaccine should notify their teachers at once so that clinics may be ar ranged by the local health depart ment if the demand warrants. In this case there will be a small charge to cover the cost of the vaccine. P. T. A.
