For The Women Society News and Club Activities FRANCES WALKER, Society Editor -Phone 7, Night 380 WMS Members Plan Day Of Prayer Thursday At First Baptist Church Covered Dish Luncheon To Be Served At Noon. Mrs. Jones To Preside “Christmas for Christ” is the theme of a Day of Prayer for For-| eign Missions which will be ob served by the members of the Wo men’s Missionary society of the First Baptist church beginning at 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning. Mrs. J. B. Jones, president of the WMS, will preside over both sessions and a covered dish lunch eon will be served at noon. Mem bers of the business women’s cir cle are invited to attend the lunch eon. Representatives from all circles i will appear on the program, and a full attendance from these groups i.s urged by the president. Women participating on the morning program are Mrs. Ken neth McDaris, Mrs. Charlie llimes. Mrs. Lester Martin, Mrs. John l ord, Mrs. D. F. Moore. Mrs. W. P. Tindall. Mrs. O. R. Willingham, i Mrs. Streeter Fisher. Mrs. Avery. <’ase. Mrs. Earl Bagwell and Mrs.i Fred Henson. Participants on the afternoon program will he Mrs. L. P. Ham lin. Mrs. Ralph Ramsey. Mrs. J. A. Glazener, Mrs. Ralph Duckworth and Mrs. L. P. Hamlin. Following the program a busi ness session of the WMS will be held, since this program is being held on the regular meeting day of the missionary society. Wednesday Club Met With Mrs. Bobst On Nov. 24 Mrs. Harry Bobst was hostess at the last regular meeting of the Brevard Wednesday club on No vember 24. An informative program by Mrs. H. V. Smedberg on “Outstanding Writers of North Carolina” high lighted the meeting. She ably dis cussed the most noted authors of this state and their outstanding contributions. Following a routine business meeting, a social hour was held and delicious refreshments were served. There were 14 members present and two guests, Mrs. Edith Beam and Mrs. Charles Davis. The next meeting will be on December 8 at the home of Mrs. C. L. Newland. Circles To Meet This Week The four circles of the Presby terian church will meet this week, it has been announced. Circle No. 3 will meet Thurs day night. December 2. at 8:00 p. m. with Mrs. Eric Neumann. Circle No. 4 will meet Thurs day night also with Mrs. J. M. \\ inget. Circle No. 1 will meet Monday afternoon, December 6. with Mrs. E. E. Vassey at 3:00 o’clock. Brevard college students and I several townspeople enjoyed a i dance in the college gym Thanks | giving night from 8:00 until 12:00. The function was sponsored by the Bailar club, social dance group. Bob Davis and his college or I chestra played for the occasion with Lois Stratton and .lack Prince, vocalists. The gym was gayly decorated with green and white streamers which formed a covering from the center of the ceiling. Reflec tors on which a large spotlight was turned formed a moon, and an arch in the center of the floor was covered with red roses, thus carrying out the theme “Moonlight and Roses.” The dance was semi-formal. Methodist Circles Meet Thursday Two circles of the Brevard Meth odist church will meet Thursday afternoon, it has been announced. The Julia Trowbridge circle meets at the home of Mrs. W. M. Melton, Thursday afternoon, De cember 2, at 3:30 o’clock. Mrs. B. L. Laird will be the co-hostess. Members of the Laura Miller circle meet at the same hour Thursday with Mrs. Beverly Tran tham. Mrs. Anthony Trantham will be co-hostess. SARA TAYLOR GUILD MEETS The Sara Taylor guild of the Brevard Methodist church will hold a regular meeting Thursday night, December 2, at 8:00 p.m. with Mrs. Jack Trantham at her home on the Hendersonville high way. All members are requested to attend. TROOP 4 MEETING Girl Scout Troop four met Monday night at 7:00 o’clock at the Little House, and after a business session Patrol I present ed a short skit and led singing. ! Members of the patrol present-! ing the program were Mary Lou j Auvil, leader, Peggy Arnette, J Mary Louise Price, and Barbara Newman. Refreshments of drinks, sand wiches and cake were served by Patrol III composed of Wilma Waters, leader, Dannie Baker. Shirley Gaither, Kathleen Gaines, Shirley Johnson, and Shirley Rog ers. Square dancing was enjoyed and the meeting closed with a friendship circle. GIRLS PASS BADGES At the meeting of Troop 3 Mon day afternoon several girls did work on passing off their tender loot badges. Folk games were enjoyed and “Friendship taps” adjourned the meeting. All troop members are urged to be present at the Little House Monday, December 6. at 4:30 p. m. when plans will be made for the troop’s Christmas party. Mr. and Mrs. John Reese Sledge and Garland Sledge spent last week end in Atlanta as guests of Messrs. Sledges’ brother, Frank, and family. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Tharp had as Thanksgiving guests their daughter, Mrs. Fred Wescoe and family, of Swannanoa. Mr. and Mrs. Wescoe are connected with the Veterans’ hospitals at Moore General and Oteen. Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Harrington had as their guests during Thanks giving, Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Tay lor, of Asheville, Mrs. Jimmie Mc Culle and daughter, Patti, and son, Jimmie, of Washington D. C. Mrs. Rowan Gardner, of Palm Beach, Fla., and Paris, France, is this week visiting Mrs Harring ton. Dr. and Mrs. E. W. Loftis, of HD CLUB PLANS GIFT EXHIBIT IN STORE THIS WEEK North Brevard Group To Have Display At Home Interior Shop • Members of the North Brevard Home Demonstration club will ex hibit a selection of homemade Christmas gifts in the windows of ihe Home Interior shop here over the week end, it is announced to day by Anne Benson Priest, home agent. The exhibit will be placed in the window Friday afternoon, and I it will be supervised by Mrs. i Burch Brown, president, and Mrs. Charles Freck, Jr., arts and crafts leader in the club. According to the home agent the exhibit will include such things as luncheon sets, aprons, table dec orations for Christmas, homemade candles, felt articles, and many toys such as dolls, stuffed animals, blocks and balls for infants. Miss Priest was high in her praise for the North Brevard club members “who have shown origin- j ality as well as economy in mak- j ing useful gifts at home.” College Students On Church Programs The morning worship service of the Cliffside Methodist church. Cl if f side, will be conducted by stu dents at Brevard college, with the sermon being delivered by J. P. Porter, director of the expansion program here at the local institu tion. Brevard college has accepted 15 such invitations from churches in this section of North Carolina. “These visitation programs offer experience to the 20 ministerial students, the 17 \XHing women plan ning careers in religious educa tion, the numerous Brevard col lege students who expect to be active laymen in their local church es,” Mr. Porter comments. Frank Roberts, of Charlotte, will he organist at the service in Cliff side Sunday morning and special music will be furnished by a quartet composed of Betty Anders, of Hendersonville, Lois Stratton, of Reidsville, Jack Prince, of Kings Mountain, and Charlie Freeman, oi Raleigh. The sermon topic will be “Room Enough to Live.” Concert Series In Hendersonville The first program of the Com munity Concert series in Hender sonville will be held Saturday night and will feature the Don Cossack chorus, it was learned here today. The concert will be held in the high school auditorium and will begin at 8:00 p. m. All persons in Brevard who have tickets to the series are reminded of the opening concert. There will be no tickets on sale at the door, and only members will be admitted. Baltimore. Md., spent Thanksgiv ing in Brevard with their son, who is a student at Brevard col lege, and also visited other rela tives here. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin English, of Bent Creek Experimental station, spent Thanksgiving with Mrs. Leila J. English on Jordan street. Mr. Spud Carpenter, who spent the Thanksgiving holidays with his parents in Forest City, returned home Sunday. While he was visit ing in Rutherford county, Mrs. Carpenter stayed with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed McCoy, at Pisgah Forest.
