TARHEEL WILDLIFE SKETCHES IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU__ HUNT SAFELY ——-®—------—XT DEATH IS SO PERMANENT WIN DON'T Sp^rt r* PAGE 3 Edited By John I. Anderson • — —■—■ —4 'J Rambling With The Sports Editor i WIIATA GAME . . . The Brevard Blue Devils believe in taking their games right down to the wire. Boy, that one last Saturday against C hrist School was a honey! The last minute stands the local gridmen have been making have been ideal for broadcasting, but hard on tired nerves. And to win a football game by the score of 9*8 j is something else not quite conceivable. We were amused, tho, that only a few of the fans, and the players as well, didn’t know what the \ score w'as in the last minute of play when Brevard scored the touch back against Christ School. In fact, some 30 minutes after the game was over, several Christ School boys tried to tell us that they had won the ball game. Naturally, we didn’t argue . . . not in their own back yard. TAKE IT AWAY . . . We are going to express our appreciation ahead of time to three fellows who have been working with us at the mike broadcasting the high school games this fall. Since we will be in Chicago on Friday night, Dave Sherrill, Gil Coan and Bob Kimzey, Jr., will bring you the play-by-play description of the Brevard-Tryon game. So take it away, Ole Buddies, and give the good people another 1951 thriller. That’s what we have had so far, and believe you me. we’ve enjoyed them! THE WINNERS ... la last week’s football contest Alex Kizer, Jr„ and Richard Sorrells tied for first place by picking seven win ners and missing the score of the Brevard-Christ School game five points. Bob Kimzey, Jr., was second picking the same number of win ners but missing the score six points. Duplicate prizes will be given to the first place winners as well as a prize to the second. If they will come by The Times office we will award them with theatre tickets to the Clemson or the Co-Ed theatres. A number of other people picked seven winners but missed the score by a greater number of points than the winners. THIS WEEK’S AGENDA ... By the way, if you haven’t entered one of our contests this year, do so this week end. You might win some theatre tickets. All you have to do is to pick the winners from the 11 games listed below and guess only the score of the Brevard-Tryon game.! Bring your entry by The Times office not later than 5:00 o’clock Friday I afternoon. PATRONIZE OUR ADVERTISERS Blue Devils Win No. 6, Dro Christ School By 9-8 S Carl Compton Races 90 Yards For Brevard’s TD. Score Is Oddity Brevard’s Blue Devils chalked up victory No. 6 at Christ School last Saturday afternoon. It was a hard one for the locals and when the final gun was sound ed, the score was 9-8 in favor of Brevard. The score sounds more like a baseball game than football, but two safeties and an extra point made up the queer figures. Each team scored a safety, and the Blue Devils made the extra point that brought them victory. Brevard has made only four ex tra points this season and three of them proved to be the winning margin in a game. The Blue Dev ils defeated Black Mountain 7-6, Asheville School 7-6 and Christ School 9-8. Carl Compton was th# big gun for the Devils and scored their first marker in the second quarter whMtj he broke through the Christ School line and rambled 90 yards to scatf^ The game-winning extra point w» good as Larry Erwin hit the mid* die of the line for the necessary two yards. Christ School bounced right bai and on a sustained drive of yards, David Howie hit the line for five yards and a TD. The try fof the point failed, and Brevard led 7-6. In the third quarter the Greenies went out front by one point when Carl Compton took a punt near his cwn goal line and was caught be hind the pay dirt stripe trying to evade tacklers. Brevard forged ahead by one point in the fourth quarter when they chased Tommy Mebane. Christ Sehobl back, out of the end one for an automatic safety. Just prior to the final gun, the Greenies carried the ball over the —Turn To Page 5 GAME FRIDAY NIGHT October 19th 7:30 o'clock Lighted BHS Athletic Field BREVARD vs. TR YON Support The Local Team By Your PRESENCE AT EVERY GAME!
