MARINES HAMMER AWAY AT THE ENEMY IN KOREA THERE HAS BEEN no slackening In the U.N. offensive in Korea, despite the fast that truce negotiation pros pects have been brighter than usual in the last few days. These U. A. Marines are launching a 4.5 rboket Mirage against Communist positions in the Korean hills. (Defense DeparttkHU Photo prom International) i G. I. BILL OF RIGHTS By PAUL WHITMIRE Transylvania County Veterans Service Officer Many veterans of the Korean campaign—both able-bodied and disabled—are joining the ranks of those who are entitled to certain benefits. Ever since fighting started in the Pacific theater of operations in June, 1950, Congress has made more and more World War II ben efits available to the nation’s new est crop of veterans. As an example, disabled Korean veterans now drawing compensa tion may get in on the same pro gram of vocational rehabilitation originally set up for their World War II buddies. If they are disabled in combat or on extra-hazardous duty, or ag , avated an old condition under hose conditions, they are eligible for study or training, if they need vocational rehabilitation to over come their handicaps. Latest available figures show, that more than two hundred Ko rean veterans over the nation al ready have applied for vocational rehabilitation. In North Carolina, Reeional Manager J. D. DeRamus said the number of applications from Korean campaigners for voca tional rehabilitation number ap proximately 12 with four already I in training at various points in the [ state. Also being fulfilled is its pledge to provide unsurpassed hospital care for all veterans so entitled. Of the hundreds of Korean veterans [ in VA hospitals over the country, better than 50 per cent have been determined to be service-connect ed cases. DOGGONE SMART! Two old coon hunters were swap ! ping tall stories about their dogs. ;‘Why,” said one of them, “I had i a yaller hound oncet and every time just before I went hunting I’d whittle out a board in the shape of a coon hide stretcher, just to show him the size of the one I want ed, then I’d set it outside where ho could see it. Well, sir, one day my wife set the ironin’ board out side and that critter ain’t come back yet!” PATRONIZE OUR ADVERTISERS College To Get New Telephone System By December Doyle Says Wants New School Building In Upper Part Of The County By MRS. H. D. LEE LAKE TOXAWAY — During the past few weeks we have seen many large truckloads of brick rolling through Lake Toxaway, passing within a few feet of the site staked off for our new school building. We have learned that the brick is being taken just over the line into Jackson county to build a new school house at Wolf Mountain. While we do congratulate these people over there at Wolf Moun tain, we cannot understand why upper Transylvania must put up with such aged, non-standard schools. Many tourists who visit here each summer have asked why tuch a deplorable condition ex ists. We could not answer but we do know that children are being denied opportunities that they should have. (Editor’s Note: The next new school building fpr Transylvania will be erected in the upper part of the county.) MARRIAGE ANNOUNCED Miss Lola Owen and Curtis Ban ther were married in Pickens, S. C., October 2. Mrs. Banther is the daughter of Mrs. Ethel Kilpatrick, of Brevard, and Mr. Banther is the son of Mrs. Dock Banther, of Lake Toxaway. They are making their home in Brevard, where he has employ ment. Will Improve Service Installation of a new telephone system at Brevard college has been • in progress for some time. How j ever, according to R. O. Doyle j of the Citizens Telephone com pany, who is in charge of the in stallation, the new system may not be put into operation before De cember. The cause of the delay is [twofold—scarcity of materials and the larger process, also currently in progress, of changing the tele phone service of the city of Bre vard to the dial system. The exchange, to be in room 204 in Dunham Hall, will be operated by Dot Dellinger, a former student at Brevard. Miss Dellinger will be responsible also for records of long distance calls. There will be a telephone in ail the offices, in the library, the in firmary, the cafeteria and in all of the dormitories. To limit delay in placing a call there will be three outside lines which can be used simultaneously. Mr. Doyle and the men working with him have assured the college that everything possible will be done to expedite putting the new telephone system into service. ous operation at Mission hospital in Asheville three weeks ago.
