TO THE
DEMOCRATIC
VOTERS
OF
TRANSYLVANIA
COUNTY
Ladies and Gentlemen:
The end of our little campaign
is now in sight and I hear I am
being criticized for not having an
nounced any sort of platform.
Most every one knows my plat
form, whether announced or un
announced. You always find me
with the masses—usually with
the UNDER DOG. I am for dem
ocratic government as against
RING RULE and I shall state
briefly some of the things which,
after contacting a large percent
age of the Democratic voters
both by letter and in person, I
am sure will meet their approval.
First: I am in favor of abol
ishing the present system of
electing a few officials whose
chief business is to APPOINT
those officers whose positions
seem to be of greater importance
than are the elective ones, and
I propose instead of the present
system that we make ALL posi
tions whose duties are county
wide in their seowv EL
OFFICES, each of which is to be
filled by a duly elected officer,
responsible to you—the voter—
for tenure in his respectve posi
tion. These would include Co.
Supt. of Schools, Supt. Public
Welfare, County Farm Demon
stration Agent and County Attor
ney. Since each of these positions
is now held by a Democrat I am
sure there will be no objection
from them to making these posi
tions elective.
Second: I am in favor of work
ing out the Old Age Assistance
in a way to give proper consid
eration and assistance to all de
serving old people who are now
eligible or who may hereafter
become eligible for these bene
fits.
Third: I have heretofore ex
pressed myself favorable to those
things in which our school teach
ers are interested; having served
in the ranks of that group for
several years.
Fourth: The matter of the pur
chase of Class Rings for our grad
uating young folks and also their
uniforms, robes or whatever they
may properly be called—I find
a feeling among some of the dads
and mothers that they, as well as
the boys and girls, are being
“gypped” by some “city slicker”
(or some other type slicker) who
is overcharging for these items.
And I find, after some investiga
tion and correspondence, that
these suspicions seem to be well
founded. By dealing directly
with the manufacturer, the class
president, or officials of the P
TA can, according to information
I shall be glad to make available
to them, accomplish a saving of
from 40 per cent to 50 per cent,
which would seem quite consid
erable on a purchase involving
around a thousand dollars total.
What we can do about any of
the foregoing depends, of course,
on the results of Saturday’s pri
mary election. As your senator I
am sure I can be of assistance to
you in a much more tangible
manner than would be possible
were I not your senator. This
contest now shifts to your shoul
ders. May each one bear his part
nobly and may there be no mis
takes in the results.
My sincere thanks to each of
you. Good luck and may God
bless you.
Very Sincerely,
M. W. GALLOWAY

BREVARD COLLEGE
(Continued From Page One)
the Brevard college board of trus
tees, will present the portrait to
the college. The Rev. Mr. Hefner
is a graduate of Brevard Institute.
Dean J. J. Stevenson, Jr., acting
president of the college, will ac
cept the portrait and deliver appro
priate remarks.
Representatives from Brevard In
stitute, Weaver college and Bre
vard college, all institutions which
Prof. Trowbridge has served, will
speak at the ceremony. Represent
ing Brevard Institute is Joseph
Whisnant, of Shelby; Weaver col
lege, Carlyle Rutledge, of Kannap
olis; Brevard college, Lois Frazier,
of Brevard.
Included in the ceremony wil be
special music by Francis B. Price,
baritone soloist and voice instructor
at the colege.
Elizabeth Bridges, young grand
daughter of Mrs. J. M. Allison, Sr.,
of Brevard, will unveil the portrait.
Mrs. Allison attended the institute
on the first day of its opening.
Following the unveiling service,
an informal reception will be given
in honor of Prof, and Mrs. Trow
bridge in the college formal gar
dens. A large number of the Trow
bridge family is expected for the
occasion.
Kenneth Harris Is Painter
The Trowbridge portrait, given
to the school by the alumni of the
parent institutions of Brevard col
lege—Brevard Institute and Weav
er college—was painted by Kenneth
Harris, an alumnus of Brevard In
stitute.
Harris has had exhibitions of his
work shown throughout the south.
His numerous awards of merit in
clude the coveted award by the
American Society of Graphic Arts.
He has been commissioned to do
paintings for industry and for the
U. S. army. He has also been ap
pointed official painter for “Colo
nial Williamsburg” by the Wil
liamsburg (Va.) Restoration.
He is the son of the late Mr. and
Mrs. A. H. Harris and the brother
of Mrs. Walter Duckworth, of Bre
vara.
Work Of Trowbridge
Prof. Trowbridge is known in the
south as an authority on mountain
education. He was president of Bre
vard Institute, and later president
of Weaver colege; and is now vice
president emeritus of this institu
tion. He came to Brevard college
at its merged opening here in 1934
as vice president. He was head of
the college chemistry department,
and did additional teaching in the
fields of German and religious ed
ucation.
His retirement was made official
at the end of the summer session.
1950, The Trowbridge? made their
home til Brevard until recently
when they moved to the Methodist
home in Charlotte.
Speaking of Prof. Trowbridge's
work here, Miss Marjorie Craig,
professor of English and college
historian at Brevard, pointed out
the “personal warmth and inter
est” which characterized his work
with students.
The Trowbridge portrait will
hang over the entrance from the
foyer into the college library, ac
cording to Acting President Steven
son.
