Rambling With The
Sports Editor
-- " -- —---A
DISAPPOINTED . . . Bob Kimzey, Jr., writes from Carolina that
he’s terribly disappointed with the Tar Heels this year. We know ex
actly how Ole Buddy feels: We’re in the same boat. Bob goes on to give
us a good account of a Brevard boy on the freshman team. He says that
Charles Weiss, former Brevard high school star lineman, played a bang
up game against the Duke freshmen on Thanksgiving day. In fact, he
said, Weiss has been in most all of the freshman games this fall, and
shows excellent promise of developing into a real college player. Don’t
be surprised if you see his name in Carolina’s line-up next fall.
BIG GAME . . . Many Brevard football fans traveled across the
Pisgah last Thursday to watch the big Thanksgiving game between
Waynesville and Canton. And the favored Mountaineer team came
through in the final analysis. At least five Brevard cars didn’t make
it across the top of the mountain at Wagon Road Gap. Instead, they
stopped up there “on top of the world” and listened to the game on
the radio. The Waynesville station isn’t strong enough to send the
signal down into the valley on this side, but the reception up there
was good. Among those in the various cars were Dan Merrill, Ralph
Dnckworth, John B. Kilpatrick, Jack Smathers and others.
GOOD HUNTING . . . Deer and bear hunting in Transylvania this
year is good, good that is, for everybody else but us. Next week we
plan to carry a layout with several pics of lucky local hunters and their
irills. Baseball stars, Gil Coan and “Hoss” Stamey shot nice bucks dur
ing the past week, and Bill Erwin has the record to date on the larg
est deer killed. His weighed 248 pounds, believe it or not. Pete Bikas
got his buck on opening day, as did four Rosman fellows — Earl
O’Shields, Ed Owen, Norris Berkshire and P. E. Stroup.
THE WINNERS . . . Robert Sorrells was top man in our foot
ball contest last week end. He picked eight winners out of the 11
games listed, and his score of the Duke-Carolina game was 21-7. In
second place was Jewell Henderson, of Pickens, S. C., who had eight
'winners and a score prediction of 14-7. She receives two tickets to the
Clemson or Co-Ed with the compliments of Managers Carter and
Shiflet, while Sorrells gets three. The following get honorable men
tion for having seven winners: Leon McCall, Mrs. Leon McCall, Harold
and Carroll Holden, Bonnee Henderson and Eugene Knig, Jr.
SEE YOU, NEW YEAR’S . . . Our football contests are being tem
porarily suspended since there are no more big games to speak of until
New Year’s. So we’ll be seeing you come the last week end in the
month when we will offer tickets galore for picking the winners of
the bowl games.
