Brevard High News JOURNALISM PARTY GIVEN A “dress-up party” was given in the NYA hut last Friday night by the Journalism club. Ray Talley was the master of ceremonies. The entertainment was present ed by the following: Ray Talley, piano solo; Janet Miller and Pat Kimaey, duet; Carl Bishop, solo; Bobby Lee Cox, solo; and a cake walk. Dancing consisted of the bunny hop, consecutive dance, round and square dance, and shag. Cokes and cookies were served. MOVIE SHOWN On Tuesday, February 23, a mov ie, “Crossroads, U. S. A.” was shown in assembly. In addition to the movie, Gregg shorthand and typing awards were presented to commercial students. Viola Poteet was presented a gold pin for having the highest typing rate, 52 words per minute. Those receiving typing awards were: Grace McCrary, Lou Auvil, Ellen Barton, Molly Heath, Patsy Reid, Harry Nicholson, Thomas McCall, J. B. Brown, Shirley John son, Roberta Harris, Jo Ann Patter son, Jewell Blankenship, Fred Mc Call, Nell Rogers, Ro Ann Peter son, Patsy Burns, Joyce Raxter, MOVIE BEGINS AT 6:30 THURS. On Thursday, February 25, a movie, “Buckshot Goes to the Fair,” was shown. INITIATION HELD The ceremony initiating “Green Hands” into the Future Farmers organization was held Monday at Brevard high school. Ted Owen, chapter president, presided at the initiation of 21 boys. The “Green Hands" were presented bronze pins by Mr. Lyday, chapter advisor. The requirements for “Green Hands" are to be regularly enroll ed in the ninth grade agriculture class, possess facilities and have plans for a program of supervised farming, and to be able to recite from memory the FFA creed. Freshmen boys taken into the chapter were as follows: Harley Baynard, William Blythe, Gene Crowe, Charles Davis, L. E. Gallo way, Richard Garren, Jack Gold smith, Harold Holden, Nelson Math is, Billy McKelvey, Boice Nichol son, Tommy Orr, Edwin Owen, Dale Passmore, Donald Presley, Melvin Shipman, Henry Sitton, Jmi my Stroup, Edward Waters, Jerry Whitmire, and Harry Wright. NEW STUDENT ARRIVES Charles Burch, a junior transfer student from Savannah, Ga., has joined the student body here at BHS. Charles attended Commer cial high school in Savannah, where he was an active member of the ROTC. Charles is 5’ 11”, has black hair and brown eyes. He was born Sep tember 23, 1936. At present, he is residing with his sister, Mrs. P. G. S. naval might upon their ar rival Feb. 20 for a three-day stay. Among those who enjoyed rest and recreation in picturesque San Francisco was Richard R. Lambert, gunner’s mate seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh N. Lambert, of Route 1, Brevard, aboard the de stroyer tender USS Dixie. A unit of the First Fleet, Task Force 12 is conducting the largest Pacific fleet training exercise since World War II. Included with the task force are 20 San Diego ships, 21 from Long Beach and two from Pearl Harbor. The task force in cludes cruisers, destroyers, car riers, submarines, amphibious and mine warfare vessels and support ing auxiliaries. Ben Hamlin Rites Held On Thursday Graveside rites for Benjamin Washington Hamlin, who died on February 20th at the age of 92, were held last Thursday afternoon in the Glazener cemetery. Rev. Millard Brock, pastor of the Glady Branch Baptist church, offi ciated, and Moore funeral home was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers at the final rites were Leon Scruggs, Banks Nichol son, Oscar Summey, Scott Dilling ham, Carl Norris and Harry Scruggs. Flower girls were Mrs. Clarence Stamey, Mrs. Oscar Summey, Mrs. Floyd Mathis, Miss Louise Allison, Mrs. Reese and Mrs. Roxie Ward. Mr. Hamlin’s rites were delayed, awaiting the arrival of a grandson, Pvt. James Odell Brackens, who was given a 30-day leave from his post in Alaska. Survivors of the Transylvania na tive include one son, David Ham lin; a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Bracken, also of Brevard; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. SINGS IN CHOIR Miss Jane Bishop is a member of the Lander college choir and sex tet which is touring 16 churches and high schools throughout South Carolina this week. The Cedar Mountain girl sings second soprano. A career as a salesman has fallen in standing during the past few years but the average salary ranges from $5,000 to a high of about $42, 500 with the top sales manager tak ing home $212,600.
