PERSONALS Mrs. Opal King, Brevard’s city clerk, attended the school for city clerks and accountants at the Insti tute of Government, Chapel Hill, last week. ! T. A. Varner, of Port Orange, Fla., visited his father, S. E. Var ner, here last week end. The elder Mr. Varner has been confined to his home for the past 10 days but is reported to be improved. Mrs. Mack Allison, Jr., who un derwent surgery Tuesday at Tran sylvania Community hospital, is re ported to be satisfactorily recover ing. Miss Dorothy King has returned from Moore General hospital after receiving treatment there for some four months. Captain King receiv ed injuries during World War II ■while she was serving in the army nurse corps in England. Col. and Mrs. G. E. Graham were guests recently of Miss Dorothy King at her home on Probart street. Colonel Graham has recent ly returned from a tour of Germany and is now in Raleigh where he is chief of the North Carolina mili tary district. Miss Harriet Patterson left last week for Atlanta, Ga., where she has accepted a position with Rich’s store. Mrs. W. E. Neill is spending this week in Asheville with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Plato Alli son. Mr. and Mrs. Grady McCall and son and Mr, and Mrs. Edward Kitchen and family were week end visitors in Canton. News has been received here of the death of George B. Crank, of Waynesboro, Va. Mr. Crank died of a heart attack while working on a construction job in Ohio. He was employed by the DuPont company iiiBueiiBMiMeMiiiiiittaBCMMiMmmmitmii here on the construction of the cellophane plant and had many friends in Brevard. Dr. Charlie Carroll, head of the state department of education, and Gerald Cowan, of Asheville, new member of the state board, visited briefly in the county last Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Kilpatrick and children returned last week to their home in Thousand Oaks, Calif. They were called home due to the death of Mrs. Kilpatrick’s father, Streeter Fisher. Mr. and Mrs. James Bowen have also re turned to their home in Wichita, Kansas. Another daughter, Mrs. Richard Bollinger, of Hamilton, Bermuda, will remain with her mother until April. Miss Grace Piercy received word Wednesday morning of the death of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Fred Pier cy, at her home near Burnsville Tuesday night. She had been ill for some time. Bobby Brooks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lem Brooks, returned home last week after spending 2 1-2 years in overseas service with the U. S. army. Mrs. Lamar Lewis, of Green ville, spent last week as guest of Mrs. Bates Patton at Patton Farm. Miss Frankie Miller, of West Virginia, is here visiting her sis ter, Mrs. J. S. Nicholson, at her home on Main street. Jack Dermid, of Greenville, was a week end guest of his sister, Mrs. L. W. Bonnell, and family. Dr. and Mrs. J. B. Wilkerson re turned home last week end after spending a month at the Mayo Clin is in Rochester, Minn. Mrs. A. K. Lewis, of Greenville, spent last Saturday in Brevard. Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Martin were business visitors to Asheville on Tuesday. Large Group From County To Attend Women’s GOP Meet In addition to Mrs. Millard Teague, who is district vice chair man, and Mrs. Merritt Biglow, sec retary of the Transylvania Repub lican Women’s club, other dele gates to the spring conference of the National Republican Women's division in Washington from this county are as follows: Mrs. Ralph R. Fisher, Mrs. Mark Crosswell, Mrs. Eugene King, Mrs. Fred Sutherland, Mrs. Roland Ow en, Miss Sallie Merrill, Mrs. Lester Martin, Mrs. Robert Matthews, Mrs. Lewis Hamlin, Mrs. Robert Levy and Miss Frankie Moore. Mrs. Vivian Pitts, of Morganton, secretary of the North Carolina Federation of Republican Women, made the announcement of the above group. Women from all over the nation will attend the conference, which will be a training session prepara tory to the fall convention, Mrs. Pitts stated. Colored Woman Dies At Advanced Age Funeral services were held yes terday at 3:00 o’clock for Aunt Sa rah Mackey, well known local col ored woman, who died early Tues day morning in the local hospital at an advanced age. The Rev. A. E. Duncan officiated. Burial was in "the local colored cemetery with Pilgrim funeral home, of Hender sonville, in charge. She is survived l>y several children and a number «of more distant relations. Square Dance Sat. At Country Club An old-fashioned square dance will be held at the Brevard country club this Saturday night from 9 to 12 midnight. The dance is for mem bers and out-of-town guests only. “Speedy” Jones will do the call ing and music will be furnished by the Ecusta square dance band. A small admission will be charg ed. PHILLIPS PASTOR AT ENON CHURCH By AGNES W. MERRILL PENROSE — Rev. Robert Phil lips, of Brevard, was elected pas tor last Sunday at Enon Baptist church. He will preach on the first and third Sunday mornings and second and fourth Sunday nights. He will preach Sunday morning, March 7th, at 11 o’clock. Everyone is urged to come out and encour age Rev. Phillips in his new com munity. Rev. Phillips succeeds Rev. Ralph Banning, who is pastor at Edneyville. In Church Basement The regular monthly meeting will be held on Monday night, March 8th, at 7:30 in the church basement. Every teacher and work er is urged to attend. The host esses will be Mrs. Agnes Merrill, Mrs. Clara Brown, Mrs. Sula Cox and Everett Blythe. Sunday School News The Sunday school is working toward a worthy goal on the cru sade of a million more in ’54. Plans are to reach every home in the community and enroll them in S. S. Further plans for this great cru sade will be discussed at the regu lar workers council on March 8. Under discussion also will be at taining “The Standard of Excel lence” by our S. S. Supt. D. C. Lan dreth. RA News The J. C. Owen chapter of Royal Ambassadors for Christ has been organized and is meeting regular ly with the counselors, D. C. Lan dreth, assisted by Brown Pace. 18 members are enrolled. Plans are being made also for organizing of another chapter of RA for the in termediate age boys. They held their first meeting Wednesday eve ning, March 3, with counselors D. C. Landreth, Brown Pace and Jim my Case. The RA meets on 1st and 3rd Wednesday nights in the church basement. Baptist Groups Hold Joint Meet The Baptist Men’s Fellowship club and the Sunday school cabinet held an enjoyable joint dinner meeting Tuesday night with the food being served by the ladies of the adult department. After a business session, a film in connection with the Baptist Sun day school enrollment program, en titled, “Visitations” was shown. Leaves For Europe PFC. CHARLES R. RYDER, who is home on furlough visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ryder, at Cedar Mountain, leaves on March 10th for Europe. Young Ryder is a mechanic with the army engineers, and he entered the service last May. WICKLIFFE CEDAR MOUNTAIN — Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Croswell have returned to their home here after several months in Atlanta, Ga.f and Miami, Florida. Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Edwards and family spent the week end at their summer home from Jacksonville, Fla. Mrs. Mack Bell visited her aunt Mrs, Joseph Jones on Tuesday. Mrs. Ralph Lee and Mrs. Otis Baynard motored to Atlanta, Ga., on Friday. Mrs. Robert L. Williams and Mrs. Mark Croswell spent Monday in Greenville on business. Saturday being such a lovely day we were able to work quite a lot on our community building. We have the roof ready to go on and the window panes to place in the windows and then we hope to be able to have our summer meetings Eller Moves Office Over Long’s Drug Thomas R. Eller, Jr., attorney and counsellor at law, moved his offices this week to the Cooper building over Long’s drug store. Mr. EUer had been engaged in law practice in partnership with Lewis P. Hamlin since the fall of 1952. A native of Salisbury, Mr. Eller is a graduate of the law school of the University of North Carolina. He has seen service in both World War II and the Korean conflict. In addition to his general law practice, Mr. Eller is also attorney for the town of Brevard. in our new building. Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Jones have been on the sick list for several weeks. Several of our boys and their pa rents attended the Cub Scout ban quet Friday night at the Lutheran church in Brevard. Master “Ricky” Skarrett cele brated his sixth birthday on Sun day with a party at his home. Miss Patsy Burns spent the week end in Brevard with Miss Barbara Galloway.
