Little River Community News Talent Show Is Huge Success, Youth Group Enjoys Outing Women Have Surprise Luncheon. Memorial Ser vices Are Planned By MRS. JOHN T. NEAL LITTLE RIVER — The talent show presented at the Little River Community club house Saturday night proved to be one of the best programs of its kind to be held in the club house. In spite of the weather the pcinic was a real treat after which the regular business meeting was presided over by the president, Otis Merrill. The high light of the business meeting, was reached as the club voted to re model and paint the club house. After a report of the various committees the talent show began. Young and old entered into the singing and many forms of enter tainments. There were readings, choir numbers, quartets, duets, so los, double quartets, a family skit, group singing, and a black face comedy in one act, ‘'Across the s Backyard Fence.” After the talent show, colored slides were shown by Mr. Glazener of scenes of the de velopment going on in Little River. Conduct Prayer Service As a special feature during their Focus week the GA’s gave a pro gram on Prayer and Faith at the mid-week prayer service. The pro gram was written and presented by Nancy Pickelsimer, who is program chairman of the auxiliary. Those taking part on the program were: Jo Ann Shipman. Sybil Miller, Mar tha George, Jean Pickelsimer, Elaine Frady, and Lois Sitton. Also at the associational GA rally held Friday night at Glady Branch, the Janet Wilson GA’s helped pre sent a skit of camp life at Fruit land. Those taking part from Little River were Arlene Mull, presiding as president, Elaine Frady, Jo Ann i Shipman, Nancy Pickelsimer, Mrs. Glanna Shipman and Mrs. Overton Mull. The rally was planned by Miss Wilhelmina Simmons, young people’s director for the associa tion. It was very inspirational and well attended. Delicious refresh ments were served by the Glady Branch church. m tiuut uu riuiuoking The Youth Forum of Little River selected White Pine camp ground in the Pisgah National Forest to have a surprise picnic for Tommy Merrill and Margaret George last Tuesday night. The picnic was planned by Jo Ann Shipman, the president, and enjoyed by 21 young people, including the pastor and his wife. The Youth Foruna will meet Sat urday night at the home of Marga ret George at 8:00. Surprise Birthday Dinner Those women again — this time Mrs. Glanna Shipman was the vic tim or the honored guest. The Mis sion Quartet was rehearsing at the home of Mrs. Elmer Kilstrom and Mrs. Shipman happens to be a mem ber of this musical group. At 1:00 o’clock the invasion began with half the women population of Little River walking into the Kilstrom home with covered dishes. Mrs. Shipman was surprised because her birthday wasn’t until Wednesday, the next day. Memorial Service "The Little River Baptist church will observe May 30th as Memorial day. Special services are being planned and all men and women who have served at any time in the armed forces are invited to attend. All families, relatives or friends who have folks buried in the ceme tery at Little River are invited to attend. If you have a son or daugh ter serving in the armed forces be present to stand for him as the Roll of Honor is called. Red Cross Nursing School The Red Cross school for home nursing started last week with 10 ladies enrolled. The class is being taught by Mrs. Baxter Morris and is one of the most interesting and informative experiences we have had at Little River. Choir Rehearsals The adult choir under the lead ership of Mrs. Elmer Kilstrom will meet for rehearsal Thursday night at 7:30 in the Little River Baptist church. The youth choir will meet' at the parsonage Saturday night at 7 o’clock, one hour before the fo rum meeting, for rehearsal. All choir members are urged to attend these meetings. Party For The Twins A birthday party honoring the eighth birthday of Julie and Jane Shuford was enjoyed by 30 chil dren and nine mammas last Thurs day at the Shuford home. Julie and Jane are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Merrimon Shuford of Little River. Games were played with the help of Louise Orr and Peggy Sitton, of Pisgah Forest, and a good time was enjoyed by all. Many gifts were brought and the party ended with the serving of delicious refresh ments. Personal Items Tommy Merrill, son of Mr. and ■ Mrs. Robert Merrill, serving in the | air force, will leave this week for California where he is expecting to embark for Japan. Tommy has en joyed a three-weeks’ vacation at home with his family. We wish him the best of luck on his new adven ture. T. J. McCall, serving with the U. S. navy, has spent a few days at home with his wife and chil dren. He left Sunday for his home base. His family and friends are looking forward to his retirement in July. Mrs. R. H. Penland, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Spencer, Mrs. Duke Russell and Mrs. Pat Russell, all of Clyde, were Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Mackey. Mrs. W. C. Shipman, of Hender sonville, is spending some time with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Otis Merrill. Mrs. W. P. Holtzclaw, of Flat Rock, was a week end guest of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Holtzclaw. Mrs. Bessie McCall who has been visiting her son, Mr. and Mrs. Odell McCall, of Columbus, Ga., is back home now at Little River. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Couch, Jr., and children, Tommy, Bobby and Mary Katherine, of Asheville, and Mrs. Keener of the same address were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Talve Merrill. Ralph Drake, of Easley, was a recent visitor of Mrs. Gaston Mc Call. Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Edmundson of Oak Ridge, are the proud pa rents of a boy, Allan Wayne, born May 4th. Mrs. Edmundson is the sister of Mrs. Merrimon Shuford. Mrs. Thala Shuford, Mrs. Flora Pickelsimer, Mr. Merrimon Shuford and Mr. Fred Hamilton attended the funeral services of Mr. Spur geon Hamilton in Hendersonville, Sunday. Gurley Shipman, of Tampa, and sister, Mrs. Dovie Scruggs, of Horse Shoe, were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Merrimon Shuford. Rev. and Mrs. J. A. Anderson, of Greenville, and Mrs. Pearl Thack er, of Washington, D. C., were Mon day callers of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Shipman. Mr. and Mrs. Dedrick Morgan, Mr. and Mrs. Don Morgan and Carolyn; Mr. and Mrs. Bergin Rob inson, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Robin son and son, Mike, all of Candler, were Sunday afternoon guests of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Medford. Date Is Set For June 26th Plans were made Tuesday night at a committee meeting of the Lake Toxaway Community club for the radio program which the club mem bers will present over WPNF on June 26, as a part of the communi ty development program. County Agent J. A. Glazener re viewed the programs of other com munities and discussed the commu nity development program in Hia wassee, Ga. The club officers were introduced by Harold McNeely, president. Speakers and their talks on the radio program will include: John Price, “Assets of the Community;” Mrs. Eugene Xing, “History of the Community;” Mrs. Lewis Tinsley, “Home Improvement;” Warren Fisher, “Farm Activities;” Marga ret Owen, FHA; Edward Johnson, Jr., FFA; L. H. Thomas, “Educa tional Progress;” the Rev. Neal McGlamery, “Church Activities.” The Rev. R. E. Moody and the Rev. T. F. Rose will conduct the devotions. Martha Ann Thomas is in charge of the music. Mrs. Beulak McNeely is program chairman and she is being assisted by county agent, Glazener, Mrs. S. C. Clapp and B. E. Keisler. Vernon Galloway has return ed to Camp Lejeune after a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. ! V. Galloway. to Pickens for the ceremony. Galloway-Johnson Miss Georgia Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anderson Johnson, of Old Fort, became the bride of Victor Galloway, son of Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Galloway, of Rosman, in a double ring ceremony May 1 in Marion. The bride wore a blue suit with white accessories. She is a member of the senior class of Old Fort high school. The bridegroom recently receiv ed his discharge from the U. S. navy where he spent 17 months serving with the Sixth Fleet in France, Spain, Turkey, Cuba and Africa. He is now employed as a carpenter here. Mrs. Johnson is residing with her parents until the close of the pres ent school term, after which the couple will reside here.
