COMMERCE GROUP (Continued From Page One) Lewis Hamlin, reported that direc tion signs had been erected by the state highway of South Carolina at Travelers Rest showing distance tp Brevard, and also six signs in the Asheville-West Asheville section. The large sign at Travelers Rest has been repainted in colors by a commercial artist at Greenville and was reported to be in excellent shape. The directors voted to assist the state health department in the chest X-ray program here on June 2S to July 3, and several members will canvass the business section to advertise the program and secure pledges of business firms to have the owners and employees partici pate in the program. Buddy Melton is chairman of the group. A committee, headed by Don Jenkins, was asked to secure decal signs for doors of members. It was pointed out that the decals would provide advertising for members and also be an invitation to visitors to ask for information and courte sies in the office of members dis playing the signs which will show membership for 1954. Report by Mrs. Ford showed 56 members have paid dues to date this year. J. E. Driscoll, Box 332, Brevard, N. C. Ph.s TU. 2-2981 BALSAM GROVE (Continued From Page One) to stimulate activities in other communities,” Mr. Glazener said, after receiving many comments on the report of the Balsam Grove community club members. It was the consensus that Bal sam Grove had been underestimat ed, and now the feeling is that this upper Transylvania group is “real ly in the running” for prize money totaling more than $1,000. Many of the residents of Balsam Grove, which is located 12 miles above Rosman, are part-time farm ers, being employed in industries throughout the county. A survey of 40 of the 70 Balsam Grove farms reveals the farms are about 60 acres each, with the prin cipal crops being corn and hay. Im proved pastures are being stressed, and nearly every home has a large garden. As acres in pastures have in creased, so has interest in livestock. For the 70 farms, there are more than 400 head of cattle. Balsam Grove was founded in 1821, and derived its name from its first post office, which was located in a grove of balsams. Lumbering has been important in the commu nity from the very beginning, and a new source of farm income is be ing developed in the community, that of the production of commer cial and hatching eggs. The Balsam Grove Community club was only recently organized, and accomplishments are being made now instead of being publi cized by the members, T. R. Chas tain, the president reports. Among the ’54 goals are: (1) in crease farm income through wiser use of research findings, time and materials; (2) hold 10 corn demon strations; (3) reduce idle acres by planting adapted crops or trees; (4) plant 50,000 white pine seed lings; and (5) improve quality of livestock through the use of better breeding. Little Theatre Has Banquet And Elects Officers The Brevard Little Theatre held its annual banquet and business meeting at Gaither’s Rhododendron room. The affair, highlighted by the election of officers, was attend ed by some 50 members and guests. Ralph Palmer succeeds Gunther Baldauf as new president of the or ganization. Other officers are Smith Conklin, vice president; Mrs. Bill Norris, second vice president; Mrs. Grace Perkins, secretary, and Dick Davis, treasurer. Directors are Ernest Gilstrap, Mrs. J. H. Sanders, Dr. Julius Sa der, Mrs. Arthur Loeb and Mrs. Harry Dreyer. The membership also voted on a new set of by-laws which will be used for a year on a trial basis. Charles Norlander presented the changes which had been drawn up by a special committee. After .the gavel was turned over to the new president, he announced that the play reading committee would be instructed to select all three of next season’s plays this summer. This will enable members to prepare for a part they might desire, he said. Earn $40. to $200. A Week In The Field Of Beauty Culture 25,000 Beauticians Needed This Year Women and Men, ages 16 to 60.
