Bulb Show Is Planned Next
Wednesday. Plans For
Year’s Work Discussed
By MRS. J. E. CISON
DUNN’S ROCK — The regular
monthly meeting of the Dunn’s
Rock community center was held
Friday evening, March 11th. The
feature of the meeting was an in
teresting talk by Miss Anne Benson
Priest on home improvements,
which was illustrated by colored
slides. She stated that her services
were always available for those de
siring suggestions for the improve
ment of their homes.
Equipment Purchased
Miss Elizabeth Davis reported
that the new kitchen equipment,
which includes plastic dishes and
stainless steel utensils, had been re
ceived and is now on display in the
center kitchen. Plans are already
underway to hold a supper in the
near future.
Spring Bulb Show
A spring bulb show, sponsored
by the Connestee Home Demonstra
tion club of Dunn’s Rock, will be
held at the center on Wednesday,
March 23rd, from 3 to 6 p. m. The
purpose is to exhibit the great va
riety of bulbs grown in this area.
Exhibits are most welcome and
should be at the center by 11 a. m.
Wednesday. A cordial invitation is
extended to all. Tea will be served.
Discussion Held
A round-the-stove discussion was
held by the committee chairmen at
the cent&r last Monday evening.
Plans were talked over for the
year’s work, and there was a fine
crop of ideas, which should bring
forth good fruit.
Singing Well Attended
A singing was held at the center
Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock
with a good crowd present for the
occasion. A host of visitors came
from East Fork and several num
bers were sung by the East Fork
trio, which were greatly enjoyed.
The next singing will be held at
the center Friday evening, March
25th. All singers are invited and a
cordial invitation is extended to
>
anyone who is interested in good
ihymn singing.
When It Rains . . .
The saying, “When it rains it
pours,” certainly applies to the H.
B. Glazener family. Mr. Glazener’s
mother has been very ill for some
time, and their little grandson
Benny is critically ill after under
going a major operation recently.
Then last Monday Mr. Glazener’s
sister had the misfortune to break
her hip in a fall. Our heart goes out
to the entire family in their time
of trouble.
Revival To Be Held
The Rev. Jake Taylor announced
Sunday that a revival meeting
would be held at the Dunn’s Rock
Baptist church April 4th through
9th, with the Rev. Marlow Durham
as guest minister. Mr. Durham has
helped with several revivals in the
county and has been well received
by the people of Dunn’s Rock and
other parts of the county. A cor
dial invitation is extended to all to
attend these services.
Study Course In Progress
Due to so much sickness in
Dunn’s Rock community, the study
course for the church had to be
postponed in January and is now in
progress. The book for the course
is the Book of Hebrew.

Setting Up Goals To Be Vot
ed On April 7th. HD Club
To Meet Wednesday
By MRS. JOHN T. NEAL
LITTLE RIVER — It was indeed
a thrilling experience last Novem
ber to be the winning community
of Western North Carolina, and
many of us wondered with a little
sick feeling: Would we keep on
working or would we be satisfied
to sit back with our laurels? The
truth of the situation is that there
is more work going on now than
there was last year at this time. If
you don’t believe this take a look
at the work Albert Merrill has been
doing to the yard and grounds of
the Townsends with his bulldozer,
and the Neal Hamilton’s yard and
driveway. The Caldwells have also
built a quarter of a mile of new
road to their lovely remodeled
home. T. J. McCall has worked
more than six weeks in improving
his grounds and yard. Mr. and Mrs.
Overton Mull have finished remod
eling their home and have moved
into it.
Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Mull have
built two new rooms on to their
home and are using them. Mr. and
Mrs. Claud MacMahon have start
ed building their home on the Is
land Cove road. There is also a
new house going up on Shipman
drive belonging to the son of Will
Owenby. The improvements having
ibeen done to Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe
McCall’s home are too numerous
to mention. Mr. and Mrs. Gillard
Merrill have painted inside and out
in their home. These are just a few
of the many things going on.
There is a rumor that sometime
during the month of May the Little
River community will be toured by
some of the business men of Ashe
ville who sponsored or paid for the
^contest last year. We will be happy
to see them I’m sure and show
•them our beautiful valley and hap
py people.
Goals In The Planning
A meeting of the officers and
leaders was held last week by Otis
Merrill, president of the Little
River Community club, and a list
of goals were planned for 1955. i
These goals will be voted on at the
next meeting of the club April 7th.
Don’t miss this meeting — these
goals will simply knock your eye
out and, if reached at the end of
the year, will surpass anything we
have ever done. Remember, “There
is no limit to what a community
can do, if it wants to.”
Youth Choir To Sing
The young people of the Little
River Baptist church will have
charge of the music Sunday morn
ing and night at the regular church
services. The Cherub Choir will also
sing during the morning worship
service.
Circles To Meet
The Lou Osborne circle will
meet at the home of Mrs. Howell
Medford Thursday night at 7:30.
After the cottage prayer meeting
to be held at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Elmer Kilstrom Thursday
night the Becky Orr circle will meet
with Mrs. Kilstrom.
Friday Night Rally
District 1 of the Transylvania as
sociation, of which Little River is a
part, will meet at Enon Baptist
church Friday night in the interest
of the April Simultaneous Crusade
of the Southern Baptist Convention.
All churches in this area are urged
to attend and listen to the inspira
tional sermon by C. D. Bessinger
of the Grace Baptist church in
Asheville.
Bible School Meeting
Mrs. Glanna Shipman, principal
of the Little River Daily Vacation
Bible school, wishes to use the
same faculty as of last year, and
urges that all who possibly can at
tend the Bible school clinic at the
First Baptist church beginning at
9:00 o’clock Saturday morning. Mrs.
Charles McCrary is a new member
of the faculty and will serve as rec
reational leader of the school this
year.
HD Club To Meet
The Little River HD club will
meet at the parsonage with Mrs.
Neal as hostess Wednesday after
noon, March 23rd. Mrs. Claud Mac
Mahon, clothing leader, will give
a demonstration on “Clothing.” All
ladies of the valley are invited to
attend this meeting and will cer
tainly profit by things that are dis
cussed in these meetings. What is
more important than the home?
Our Sick
E. H. Mackey, who is in the Bap
tist hospital in Winston-Salem, is
doing nicely according to the latest
reports and will not have to under
go surgery.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred McCall are
both under the doctor’s care and
possess the anxiety of their family
tnd friends. Miss Loie George is
still on our sick list. Tommy Mc
Call and Jerry Merrill are improv
ing as well as can be expected. Mrs.
Leland George is confined to her
home due to illness. We hope for
these folks a speedy recovery.
