TRANSYLVANIA BOY SCOUT ACTIVITIES COMMISSIONERS MEET Transylvania district commission er, Harry S. Kolman, held an in structional meeting for Transylva nia neighborhood commissioners, with nr. Robertson, of Asheville, leading the instruction. Those attending the meeting were: J. D. Curwen, C. D. Norlan der, W. G. Austin, all neighborhood commissioners; Dr. E. 0. Bryant, district vice chairman; and A. W. Tucker, Jr., district chairman of advancement. EXPLORER CONFERENCE During the week end of Sept. 16 3B, a conference for all Explorer Scouts and leaders of the Daniel -Boone council will be held at West ern Carolina college, Cullowhee. More details next week. ORDER OF THE ARROW Six Transylvania Scouts and scooters were inducted into the Or der of the Arrow, a national broth erhood of scout honor campers, at Camp Daniel Boone. Those taken into the order were Benet S. Hol man, senior patrol leader of Troop 1; Edward B. Matheson, Jr., and Au gustine W. Tucker, III, both patrol leaders of Troop 1; Robert McCrary, patrol leader of Troop 2; Charles F. Moore, a member of the Transyl vania district committee; and Au gustine W. Tucker, Jr., scoutmaster of Troop 1 and a member of the district committee. The Order of the Arrow is a most worthwhile adjunct of scouting and contributes greatly to it in service projects of one kind or another. TROOP 1 NEWS Troop 1 had its annual charter presentation the night of August 1. This charter, which was presented, was the 39th that has been given to the troop which is the oldest in the Daniel Boone council, having been originally chartered in March 1916. The charter was presented by Cecil Hill, chairman of the district organization committee to Julian Glazener, president of the Brevard Xiwanis club which sponsors Troop 1. Mr. Glazener in turn gave the charter to Dr. Earle 0. Bryant, chairman of the troop committee who presented it to A. W. Tucker, Jr., scoutmaster. Adult membership cards were presented to Messrs. William F. Orr, Edgar J. Loftis, Jr., and Henry McDonald, members of the troop committee, and to Messrs. Bryant and Tucker and to F. B. Ayres and Harry Sellers, Jr., assistant scout masters and 0. K. Smathers, ex plorer advisor. Three members of Troop 1 have participated in the canoe trips from Brevard to Long Shoals sponsored by the Daniel Boone council for Ex plorers. They are John Allison, Tommy Gardner and Gus Tucker. A crew of Explorers sponsored by Troop 1 will participate in the Ap palachian Trail hike being put on by Daniel Boone council the 18th, 19th and 20th. COURT OF HONOR August 18, at 7:30 p. m. at Bre vard First Baptist church a Court of Honor will be held, with Troop 2 as hosts. It is hoped that slides taken this year by the group of Explorers from Daniel Boone council who made the trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimmarron, N. M., will be shown. These should be of great interest to all scouts of the Transylvania dis trict and to their families. A prize will be awarded to the troop with the largest turnout of scouts, family and friends. The presentation was by the present president, Bill Norris, and he lauded the work that the three men had done in previous years for the local junior chamber of com merce. President Norris announced that the next meeting would be an out ing and that new members would be inducted at that time. A large number of new members is expect ed to be taken into the club at that time. The outing will be held at John Ford’s place in the Island Ford section of Transylvania county on August 24th. The last meeting climaxed the membership drive, and group one was the winner, and group two. 'the losers, will sponsor the din ner. John Ford, Jr., is in charge of arrangements for the dinner. During the business session, the by-laws were brought up to date and were amended.
