North Carolina Masons To Build New Office And Library Building Structure Will Be Located Near Raleigh. To Be Com pleted During 1956 k By STAFF WRITER The new office and library build ing for the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina is to be located on a 5 acre site near the city limits of Ra ieigh on U. S. highways 70 and IS-A North. The announcement ot the ' award of the contracts was made today by Watson N. Sherrod, En field, chairman of the building committee. J. M. Thompson com pany, general contractors, Raleigh, is contractor for all phases of the work. The exact amount of the con tract was not given (but is under stood to be approximately $250, 000.00). Dr. Charles H. Pugh, Gas tonia, is grand master of Masons in North Carolina, and Wilbur L. Mclver, Raleigh, is grand secretary of the grand lodge. The new facility will allow expan sion of the grand lodge activities and will fill a long felt need for ad ditional executive office and libra ry space. Present offices are in the Land’s building, located at the cor ner of Fayetteville and Hargett streets, that building (formerly the I Masonic temple) having been con structed by the grand lodge in 1908, and sold by the grand lodge in 1946. The new building will be of modern design and employ the lat est materials in its makeup. There will be large tinted glare reducing glass areas on each facade. The grounds are to be fully developed with appropriate trees, shrubbery and ground cover. Drives, walks, and parking facilities for both staff and visitors will be provided. The main floor will house the executive offices for the grand lodge. The grand master’s suite, on the south ern end of the building, contains a private office and a conference room for 30 or more persons. The grand secretary and his staff will occupy the opposite end of the building, which contains three in dividual offices, a conference room and a large clerical area. A fire proof vault and a mailing area com plete the grand secretary’s suite. Materials and finishes used in the construction will be permanent and of the latest design. The basic in terior color will be blue in keeping with grand lodge colors. Ceilings will be accoustical tile with floors of diamond pattern black and white terrazzo. Matched grain walnut and birch panelling is to be used on walls of executive offices, library, and grand master’s suite. A bronze grille with abstractions of Masonic symbols will divide the entrance lobby from the main library and lounge. A special feature of the lobby will be the bronze emblem of the Grand Lodge of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons of North Carolina. This emblem will be mounted in the floor in the center of the building. Fluorescent light ing will be provided for the offices. The library will be equipped with custom designed furniture, draperies, and floor covering. An artist has been selected to execute murals for the walls depicting vari ous stages in the 168-year history of the Grand Lodge of Masns in North Carolina. The summer and winter air con ditioning system is designed for au tomatic zone control, allowing va rious parts of the building to be cooled or heated only when in use. Air will be filtered and purified throughout the cooling-heating pro cesses. Cooling of the entire plant will be accomplished with a 40-ton compressor and air handling unit. Oil fired boiler is provided for heat ing and domestic hot water. An informal ground breaking held recently culminated two years of planning and designing. Two Transylvania Boys At Crabtree State Park Camp Everette Patterson, son of Mrs. Angus Patterson, of Brevard, and Cleamen Owen, son of Mr. and Mrs R. W. Owen, of Balsam Grove, are spending this week at Crabtree Creek State park as guest of the state’s pulp and paper mills. The camp, near Raleigh, is fi nanced by four pulp and paper mills in North Carolina with h&ys receiving instruction in many phases of forestry management The camp is sponsored by the Southern Pulpwood Conservation association, of Atlanta, Ga. Their instructors, graduate for esters, are teaching the youths how to best manager the trees on their farm land. Mills financing the week - long camp are International Paper Co., the Champion Paper and Fibre Co., Riegel Woodlands Corp., and North Carolina Pulp Co. The SPCA sponsors nine such camps throughout the South with approximately 1,000 boys attending every summer.
