Don Jenkins Discusses Roses At Club Meeting Don Jenkins, who specializes in the growing of beautiful roses as a hobby, was guest speaker at the August meeting of the Brevard Garden club. The meeting was held at the country home of Mrs. W. M. Melton with Mrs. W. C. Bangs as co-hostess on Friday afternoon. Mr. Jenkins’ subject was “Rose Culture.” He was heard with great interest by the members as he told of the different species of roses and how to select and buy the best plants. He then told step by step how to grow roses successfully, dis cussing the preparation of beds, how to plant, to food, and to prune. Mr. Jenkins said the beds should be mulched for winter protection. He also told of effective sprays to be used for protection against dis eases. The speaker stated that roses are universal plants, possibly millions of years old, and are the most sat isfactory plants to be grown with continuous bloom. A large number of roses from Mr. Jenkins’ garden were on display. He urged all gar den club members to try to grow roses as a very satisfactory and re warding hobby. Mrs. Hugh Sigmon, president, presided and conducted routine business. Mrs. J. J. Stevenson won first award for an arrangement. Mrs. L. P. Hamlin, Mrs. Lester Mar tin and Mrs. W. P. Tindall won specimen awards. During the social hour guests were invited into the dining room where refreshments were served Executive Board Of WMU Meets On Saturday The executive committee of the J Transylvania Baptist Women’s Mis sionary Union will hold a meeting in the parlor of the First Baptist church Saturday afternoon, August 27th, at 3 p. m. Mrs. Kenneth Mc Darris, president, will preside. All officers and committee chair men are asked to be present for this important meeting. Mrs. Biddy Has Circle Meet Circle No. 2 of the First Baptist church met at the home of Mrs. O. D. Biddy last Thursday afternoon. Mrs. J. B. Jones conducted a rou tine business session. Mrs. W. P. Tindall presented a program from the mission study book called “The Larger Steward ship.” A social period was enjoyed at which time the hostess served punch and cookies. from a beautifully appointed tea ta ble. The club adjourned to meet Sep tember 16th, at the home of Mrs M. G. Pangle, with Miss Lucille Smith as co-hostess, and Mrs. Oli ver Orr as program leader. Mrs. Hooper is the mother of the bride Miss Thompson Is Bride Of Pfc. Calloway Miss Helen Thompson, daughter jf Rev. and Mrs. Chester Thomp son, of Cincinnati, Ohio, became he bride of Pfc. William F. Gallo way, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jalloway, of Eldred, Pa. The double ring ceremony was performed on July 9th at 6 p. m., n the First Church of the Naza ene in New Port, Ky., by the Rev. Sparks. The bride’s parents enter ained afterward at a reception. Following the wedding trip the aridegroom returned to his army post at Fort Lewis, Wash. Pfc. Galloway is the grandson of L E. Powell, Sr., of Brevard. He was a student at Brevard high school and also Western Carolina college at Cullowhee. Carolina.
