For The Women Society News and Club Activities TRANCES WALKER, Society Editor — Dial 24111 SOCIETY DEADLINE, NOON TUESDAY Children’s Habits Of Reading Are Club Study “Children’s Literature” was the subject of the program for the first fall meeting of the Book and Plate club last Tuesday night. Mrs. Robert Bolt was hostess, and Mrs. Cecil Hill, president, presided. During the business meeting Mrs. Hill reported on her attend ance at the district meeting of the Federation of Women’s clubs held in Asheville in August. Other mem bers attending were Mrs. J. A. Mac fie and Mrs. Charles Dunlop. Mrs. Hill appointed the follow ing standing committee chairmen for this year: Book, Mrs. Dunlop; finance, Mrs. J. A. Macfie; histor ian. Mrs. Spencer Macfie; pro gram, Mrs. R. E. Matthews; publi city, Mrs. Bolt; radio, Mrs. Earl Hall and yearbook, Mrs. Jack Al exander. Mrs. Harry Dreyer was program chairman for this meeting and she in turn appointed four moderators —Mrs. Earl Bryant, Mrs. Julius Sa der, Mrs. Matthews and Mrs. Bolt. Members were divided into four discussion groups. Among the questions which came before the groups were, what changes in children’s reading hab its now in comparison with your own childhood; what about the con densed, movie, TV and comic book presentations of the classics; what affect TV has on reading, especial ly among the poorer classes; and what reading suggestions members have for children. Each moderator presented the conclusions agreed upon in her group. The hostess served tasty refresh ments to 14 members, and the club adjourned to meet in October with Mrs. Sader. AUXILIARY MEETS The Transylvania Community Hospital auxiliary will have the first fall meeting in the hospital dining hall on Friday afternoon at 3 p. m All interested women are invited. THE ENGAGEMENT OF Miss Mary Jane McCall, I above, to Robert Henry Pierson, of Penrose, has been an nounced by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Roscoe Mc Call, of Penrose. The bridegroom-elect is.the son* of Mrs. A. F. Pierson and the late Mr. Pierson. The wedding is planned for November 3rd. WMS Hear Program At Meet Thursday • By Mrs. Lothery The WMS of the First Baptist church held their regular meeting in the church parlor on Thursday and heard a program given on “Lead On Oh Christ Eternal” by Mrs. Excell Lothery, chairman of Circle No. 2. Mrs. L. D. Martin presided over the business meeting. Sbe announ ced that a regional meeting will be held October 3rd at Burnsville and it is hoped Transylvania can have a good delegation. It was also announced that Mrs. B. W. Thomason’s GA’s will hold Bridge Winners At jClub Are Given A Howell movement was played at the duplicate bridge game of the Ace of Clubs last Friday evening. With average score 36, the follow ing pairs were winners: 1— Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pearce —44. 2— Mrs. Charles Colwell and Sam Kent — 42. 3— Mrs. Robert Colwell and Jack Potts — 41 ¥2. The monthly masterpoint game will be played this coming Friday. a coronation service during the ev ening worship hour, Sunday, Sep tember 23rd. All are invited. Attends Meet In Asheville Women from the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd here attended a district meeting in Asheville Sunday afternoon at the St. Mark’s church, and heard Mrs. G. R. Patterson, Western district chairman, speak on the new pro gram for women. Attending from Brevard were the president, Mrs. Harriet Hebert; Mrs. Keith J. Beam, Mrs. J. L. Mills, Mrs. E. R. Gladstitch, Mrs. Marvin Gaddy, Mrs. Roy J. DeLong, Mrs. J. L. Setzer, Mrs. Robert Y. Rhyne and Mrs. H. E. Jones. A delicious supper and recrea tional period concluded the meet ing in Asheville. The Brevard women held their monthly meeting on Tuesday night, September 4th. Highlighting the program were explanations by Mrs. Hebert and Mrs. Gaddy of the uses for which the million dollar mission budget of the Lutheran women is spent. They include mission work in the United States as well as in foreign fields. Reporting from her state con vention attendance at Lenoir Rhyne college, Hickory, Mrs. He bert urged her hearers to partici pate more actively in women’s work. The women’s quarterly thank offering was received at this time. At the social hour Mrs. Joe G. Norman, hostess, served tasty home-made sweets with coffee. DAR Chapter Is Entertained By Mrs. Lyday The Waightstill Avery chapter of the National society of Daughters I of the American Revolution met on Monday afternoon at the home of the regent, Mrs. Randal Lyday. The regent presided and the DAR ritual was led by Mrs. Charles Paxton. Mrs. J. O. Davidson brought the president-general’s message. Mrs. E. B. Matheson gave the national defense talk and also read new resolutions that were passed by the Continental Congress. Plans were made for the pre sentation by the DAR of a wreath in Rosman at the unveiling of the historical marker for the Estatoe trail September. The district meeting was an nounced for September 23rd in Marion. A delicious refreshment course was served by the hostess, and the chapter adjourned to meet October 8th, at 3 p. m., at the home of Mrs. Davidson. FORTNIGHTLY TO MEET The Brevard Fortnightly club will hold its first meeting of the • new year on Thursday, September 13th, at 3:30 at the home of Mrs. J. F. Zachary on Rice street. Mrs. Cordia King will be the hostess. CLUB MEETS TODAY The Mathatasian club will have their first fall meeting on Thurs day afternoon, September 13th, at 3:30 p. m„ at the home of Mrs. Paul Tindall. Monday, September 17 — Bre vard club meets at 2:30 p. m., at a place to be announced. Workshop Planned A workshop on “Making Slip covers” has been announced by Miss Anne Benson Priest, home agent. It will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 18 and 19, and will be open to all interested women. Further information on the slipcover workshop can be secured by calling the home agent’s office. RECENT BRIDE — Mrs. Lela B. Price, of Brevard, announces the marriage of her daughter, Mary Lois, to Airman First Class Abner Frank Peterson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Peterson, of Brevard. The marriage took place on September 1st, in Pickens, S. C. Mrs. Peterson graduated from Brevard high school, attended Blanton* Business college and is presently employed at the Healt department in Brevard. The bridegroom is a graduate of Brevard high school and is serving with the U. S. air force at Hunter base in Savannah, Ga. High School P-TA To Have Meeting On Monday Night The Brevard High School P-TA will hold its first fall meeting in the high school auditorium Mon day night, September 17, at 8 o’ clock, with the executive board meeting ait 7 o’clock. The general topic for the year’s program will be “Parents and Tea chers as Partners.” The devotional for this meeting will be given by Mrs. Fred Wallin, and special music will be present ed by a trio composed of Mrs. Verne Hill, Mrs. Nathan McMinn and Lloyd Burhans. Following the-program a recep tion will be given for the teachers. lit is hoped that all parents and teachers will make a special ef fort to attend. Brevard Lions Hold Meeting At Cedar Mountain The Brevard Lions held their last regular meeting at the Cedar Mountain community club center and were served a chicken dinner by the ladies of the community club. On the program was Forest Cudd, principal of Brevard elementary school, who gave a summary of the feelings voiced both fo» and against the Pearsall plan. A discussion on this subject followed the talk by Mr. Cudd. Charles Kelley, of Brevard, was inducted as a new member of the club by Lion president Guy Burch fiel, who presided over the meet ing.
