SENATOR SAM ERVIN ☆ SAYS ☆ WASHINGTON — The extent to which the underworld has been able to corrupt officials and organ izations is currently being demon strated by the hearings conducted I before the Senate Racketeering Commttee. Threat Of Vice Our committee has been continu ing its investigation of this sordid activity. I am certain that you have been following the hearings; I will not outline here the evidence we have heard. There is one thing that all good citizens should learn with renewed emphasis. It is that the tentacles of crime and the under world can corrupt in high and low places and that the battle against vice and corruption is a threat to legitimate organizations. In this particular phase of our investiga tion, we have been inquiring into the activities of some of the lead ers of the Teamsters Union and their tie-in with the underworld. It must be shocking for the law abiding members of this union to learn of the apparent deep penetra tion of the underworld into their union in the Pacific Northwest. It must also be shocking to the good people of Portland. Repeated It can be said that the story will undoubtedly be repeated in other school in Fleetwood, England. The First World War relic had been I handled many times by children. A j boy dropped it recently. The gre- j nude exploded. Five youngsters j were injured. i Wound Saves Man’s Life A cattleman in Australia, Char-; les Williams, shot part of his arm ' off after a poisonous snake bit him. He did it because he could not, find a knife to cut open the bitten area to let out the poison. Doctors said he undoubtedly saved his own . life. places as our inquiry unfolds. I hope that we can be instrumental in helping to destroy this cancer that is seriously threatening the very vitals of so many of our cit ies. I refer to the infiltration of the underworld into high places of in fluence and control. As the overflowing crowds jam the committee hearing room for the testimony, many are amazed and find considerable humor in the stories of vice and corruption. As I sit as a member of the commit tee, I find this evidence far from amusing. It is a tragic story of mankind’s weakness and his fail ure to perform with integrity when entrusted with responsibility. New Laws The work of the investigation is for the purpose of determining to what extent present laws need re modeling and what, if any, new legislation is needed to curb the infiltration of the underworld into legitimate labor and management activity. If it has the side value of calling attention to our country the necessity for constant vigilance to prevent the spread of this plague, ‘he hearing will have been very worthwhile. Power Of Syndicates I am reminded that so much of our attention has been devoted to other pursuits by the demands of the day that the country has been lulled into a passive mood toward the dangers of crime and the crime syndicates. They are real; they do exist; their toll in life and charac ter is astounding. Moreover, they have great power.
