Hal Cartwright says he is having “good fish ing” over at his lake. Last week end Henry Carr hooked a two and one quarter pound rainbow, which was 18 inches long. Nancy Maples, who is well known in golfing Circles in the Carolinas, has a marvelous article entitled, “The Golf Swing”, in Golf World, noted sports publication. Nancy has taught at Camp Illahee for several years and each summer she plays one or more exhibitions on the Brevard links. From the in troductory remarks about the article, we quote: ‘Having noticed this petite young lady hit a ball consistently afar and score well, GOLF WORLD asked her to describe how she does it and how oth ers can do it. She is the daughter of Palmer Maples, pro at Benlvenue Country club, Rocky Mount, who started Harvie Ward, national amateur champion, in golf and developed various other able players.” At a later date, we plan to reprint the article. INTERESTING STORY ... In digging through the history of ath letics in Transylvania county, which is now being prepared for publi cation at a later date, we discovered that back in 1924 Brevard high school’s baseball team had an undefeated season. You might be inter ested in knowing who composed the line-up during that historical spring season. Lewis Osborne, now county accountant, was the catcher, and Anthony Trantham, local businessman, was the pitcher. Philip Price was at first; Ranger Edwin English at second; Aiteen Cloude, short stop; Arthur Bryson, third base; Burrell Daniels, rightfield; Gerald Sitton, of post office fame, at center: and, Wallace Foster was in left field. BREVARD GIRLS made a good showing in the Blue Ridge conference tournament, and elsewhere on this page a list of averages is carried. Above the girls are shown in a practice session, and Bette Vaughn drops in a basket.
