PORT C* PAGE 3 Edited By John I. Anderson aaaaaaaMMaaaamaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaitai fil Rambling With l he Sports Editor CONGRATULATIONS . . . Bill Milner, former All-America foot > ball player who has been assistant coach here during the past year, has been named head football coach next fall, and to him we throw the sports bouquet of the week. Coach Milner feels that he will have a good team next fall, and after serving as assistant coach, he is fa miliar with the boys and their capabilities. Right now, tho, Coach Milner isn’t thinking about football. Baseball has him busy, and yes terday he was lamenting the fact that he had to play a game with Etowah minus the services of all the seniors, who are all this week visiting in Washington, D. C. GREAT MOVE . . . The announcement last week that Gil Coan would manage the “Indians" of Olin Malhieson Chemical corporation certainly met with wholehearted approval. We predict that Gil and his team will be the biggest drawing card in the Western North Carolina Industrial league this summer. Practice began on Monday, and Coan was pleased with the prospects for the club. And a little later other players will be joining the squad when colleges close. In recent years much has been written in this column about Coan’s playing, his speed and his field ability. We’re most happy that hometown fans will now have a chance to see him in action right here in our own backyard. EXCELLENT SHAPE ... In spite ol the cool breezes last week end, golfers by the score played the local links. And all were most impressed with the fine condition of the course, especially the bent grass greens. The committee, now in charge of making arrangements for the opening of the club house and the continued operation of the course, is going before various civic and other groups and asking support of the club and course. As new folks come in to work at Olin Mathieson and at Du Pont, the golf course and club are “musts”, and we hope that all clubs, organizations and others approached will lend a helping hand. And don’t take our word about the condition of the golf course. Drive out and see those beautiful greens. Better still, play a round or two, and often.
