BREVARD COLLEGE’S TENNIS TEAM* playing a regular schedule for the first time in several years, fared quite well. Though losing three out of four during the regular season, the team won second place in the conference meet at Mars Hill. Chastine, Tes now Star At Plate Oiin Mathiesotn’s Indians travel to Enka Saturday for a regular Western North Carolina Industrial league game. After three straight losses, the Indians will be trying desperately to get back in the win column, Play ing-manager Gil Coan reports. Short on pitchers up to now, Coan himself has been on the mound in the last few games, but he reports this condition will be solved in the very near future. Last Saturday the Indians drop ped a good game to Valley Springs by the score of 7-4. Both clubs had eight hits each. Russel Ghastaine and George Tesmow had two hits each for the locals, with one of chastaine’s be ing a bases empty homer in the fourth. PORT C! PAGE 3 Edited By John I. Each spring a number of Brevard golf ers and other civic minded citizens begin working to improve the condition of the Brevard golf course and to open the club house. This year is no exception. However, the road has been a little rough er, but things are looking up now. The course is being readied for the formal opening this week end, and all indications point to it be ing better than ever before. A lot of work is also going into the cleaning of the club house, which will be opened too, for an expecte banner season. A note to all 'golfers: Coma on out this week end. If vou like, you can enter a blind bogey tournament, and you can also pit your score against the National Open champ, Cary Middle coff. CONGRATULATIONS . . . The sports bouquet of the week goes to the Smathers familv. Son and daughter, Kenny and Lynne, brought statewide publicity to Brevard by winning the men's and women’s state championships at Charlotte, and O. K. was runner-up in the na tional event at Nashville, Indiana. AH this week he is competing in the International Elimination tourney at Chicago for an all-expense trip to Prague. Good luck. Formal Opening Of Brevard Country Club, Golf Course Is Planned This Week End Links Said To Be In Good Condition. Two Tourneys Are Being Staged The Brevard golf course will be formally opened for the ’57 season this week end. The course and club house are being readied for the opening, and the links are reported to be in good condition, especially the bent grass greens. Jn connection with the opening, two tournaments will be held. Golfers will be permitted to en ter the National Golf Day tourna ment on the Brevard course on Saturday oy paying an entry fee of $1.00. E. E. Fraser, former manager of the club, will conduct the event here, and also a blind bogey event. In the national tourney, local golfers will match their scores with Kathey Cornelius and Cary Mid dlecotff, the U. S. women’s and men’s Open champions. Cornelius will play the course at Pittsburgh, while Middlecoff will tee off at Toledo, where he will be trying to defend his crown on June 13-15. There will be three prizes award ed in the blind bogey event, of which the entry fee will be 50c. The first prize will be for the bogey itself, and then another will be awarded for the most birdies in an 18-hole round; and, the third prize will be awarded for the closest ball on No. 6. Another olind bogey will be held on Sunday. Cedar Mtn. Will Have Meetings, A Spelling Bee Set By MRS. ALVIN R. JONES CEDAR MOUNTAIN — A di rectors meeting will be held this Thursday night, June 6th. at 8:00 p. m. All committee chairman are urged to attend this meeting. The regular monthly meeting will be held this coming Monday night, June 10th, at 7:30 p. -m. A spelling bee is planned for entertainment. So let’s all be there to find out what good spellers we are. Things are busy this week in Cedar Mountain at the Rocky Hill Baptist church. Bible school is un der way. We are sorry to announce that there will only be one week. Due to the fact that the church is being added on to. We were well ipleased with the numlser of men that turned out to help Saturday at the church, but the ladies I’m afraid forgot the lunch. We ap preciated the one’s that did bring1 something. So let’s try to bring a lot this Saturday. We were very' proud of the 4 H club they' presented a wonder ful program at the church. Sunday, June 2nd. We will be looking for ward to the one next year. Our pastor got back from the State convention in Chicago. He In memory of Charles McCall, who passed away one year ago on June 1st. "Gone but not forgotten.” He was the husband of Edith Mc Call, of Royal Oak, and son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. McCall. The families wasn’t gone but a week, but it seemed like a lot longer than that. We are glad that he had a safe journey. Personals Jack Whitson enjoyed a short visit home with his family last week. We are glad to have Mr. and Mrs. William Logan of Greenville back to live with Mrs. Logan’s par ents Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Lee. The Allison’s and family spent a lovely week end at Myrtle Beach. Blue mold and anthracnose can be controlled with the same treat ment. The most economical cuts of beef come from the hind quarter. WANT TO FISH? Fishing some 40 miles out, the local men caught 24 Dol phins, King Mackeral, Amber Jacks, etc., which weighed nearly 300 pounds. The largest was a 45 inch Dolphin, that tipped the scales at 19 pounds, and it v.£s pulled in by Lewis Osborne. The group fished for some four hours, and they were well pleased with their catch. Smathers Family Wins More Archery Titles During Week Son And Daughter Cop State Titles. Father Now In International Event The Smathers family, Brevard's famous archers, made a name for themselves, again, during the past week end O. K. Smathers placed second in t’i? Brown county tournament at Nashville, Indiana, only 12 points out of first place. This week he is participating in the National Eli mination tourney in Chicago, 111., and should he win first or second, he will be given an all-expense trip to the International tournament m Prague. Tuesday, June 11 — Milwaukee Tourneys Held At Miniature Course Doug Brown, shooting a low score of 33, won the play-off in the last weekly tournament at the Brevard miniature golf course and was awarded a nice prize. Jon E. Anderson placed second with a 36 card, and Bob Brown was third with 37. All three had reached the finals with scores of 31 each Last Week’s Event Graham Grant won the play-off in the weekly tournament at the Brevard miniature golf course and was awarded a fine prize. Grant had a low score of 34 for the 18-hole carpet lay-out, and Doug Brown was the runner-up with a 36 card. Others in the final foursome i were Martv Osborne and Bobby (Brown.
