From A Reporter's Notebook 5 By FRANCES WALKER It rained for so long that when it finally cleared up we looked out at the mountains and lo and behold there was color! Hard to realize, it. is, that our mountains are beginning their autumnal ' change. Won’t be long now un til they will reach their peak in loveliness. I want to direct this statement at the “new” people who have joined us in the past year. Don’t miss seeing the beau ty of our mountains in this glor ious season. Several of us got our heads together and worked out a series of trips suggested for the | Colorama. They are included in a story that begins on the front page of the second section. I want to give my special thanks to j C. M. Douglas for his aide in < working them out. He not only j knows every road around these parts, but the pig trails, too. We didn’t suggest any pig trails, and most of the roads are good. Hope i the weather remains a little less wet, though, for the remainder of our color season. With the coming of fall comes something else dear to our hearts —community development con tests! Not boasting, but in past years I’ve guessed beforehand the winners and I’ve been right. But this time I haven’t an inkling of who will come in first place. They seem to have been working a little quieter, or at least words of their achievements haven’t come in my direction. Was chatting with Eli zabeth Davis the other day about the success of the Dunn’s Rock Roadside market. Without a doubt, she said it had operated its most successful season. Here’s one for the books. It had never rained for the market until the closing Satur day. They had had showers come during the time it was open Satur day mornings, but they never last ed long. I was surprised because I thought it rained more than that here — must have just skipped those Saturday mornings, because every Saturday afternoon I want ed to go swimming it always rain ed. I’m not much of a baseball fan, though 1 do root for the Dodgers. Anyway,r let the World Series come along and I get just as ex cited as the next red blooded American. Since I am a Brooklyn fan and don’t like the Yankees, and since Milwaukee had beat out the Dodgers for the pennant Td made up my mind that this series wasn’t going to interest me. But it didn’t take but one day until I was listening and—or watching with all the fervor of the biggest baseball fans. By the time you read this the Series may be past history. But wasn’t it fun while it lasted? Makes you sort of thankful for having such a wonderful country to live in or something like that. E. E. (Budgie) Fraser, Jr., was visiting in town this week. He was getting ready to leave for Nicarau ga, where he will operate a saw mill there. Budgie was showing folks his passport, and while I was commenting on the usual lousy picture on it, I noticed something else. Know what was printed on that passport? This is good for en trance into any country but Hun gary. That’s something, isn’t it? Recall how much red tape our Oz zie Smathers had to go into when he went to Czechoslovakia for the archery tournament? By the way, there was a picture and write-up of ... CALDWELL WE INSTALL ANTENNAS CJ Ozzie in the recent issue of a mag azine called “The Sport.” The launching of Russia’s sat tellite caused quite a stir in this country — and Brevard was no exception. Local amateur radio operators immediately got busy, joining thousands across the country in an effort to hear the signals from the artificial satel; lite. Tom Ramsay and Ed Garrett were among those reporting hearing the signal. Ed Garrett said he got a strong signal on Sunday night, but by Monday morning it was fainter. Bob Levy reported picking up a signal down on the lower band of his short wave radio. Ed made a re cording of his signal, and we I hope to get it played over WPNF this week end so everybody can hear what it sounds like. Be something to tell your grand children about, anyway. That is if Russia lets us stick around long to have grandchildren. Gene Ladd’s keeping up with his already bright theatrical career out a* the University of Kansas. Recall Gene starred in two Brevard Little Theatre plays last year while work ing at WPNF and attending Bre vard college? He went on to a won derful season at Flat Rock where he was in every one of the 11 shows I but two. Now Gene is to play the j part of King Henry IV in their production of the Shakespeare work. “Henry IV. Part I.” That’s quite a plum for a newcomer out at Kansas U. Gene got a scholarship to the Lawrence. Kansas, school and it looks as if he is going to live up to their expectations. Good luck to him. HOMECOMING WAS TERMED A SUCCESS Event Held At Carr's Hill Last Sunday. Install Pump At Community Center BY MRS. MARVIN WHITMIRE DUNN’S ROCK — This writer tires of using the word successful; however, it seems the only fitting word available at the moment to describe last Sunday’s Homecom ing at Carr’s Hill Baptist church. There was a large crowd present, from far and near, for the morn ing services and an even larger crowd present for the good sing ing that started at 2' p. m. The picnic was spread on the tables set up under shady trees on the church grounds, and the var iety of food was simply wonderful. (This is strictly my opinion: there was so much food that I shall think of it all week as I was not hungry. Wouldn’t that be my luck!) It was a pleasure to have associa tional missionary, Rev. Clay Barnes present for the picnic and he returned beautiful thanks for the food. The fellowship all during Homecoming was warm and very wonderful. Dan Wallin was in charge of the music for the afternoon and sang several lovely selections, all with an inspirational message. - The Jones quartet from Glady Branch Baptist church was heard several times during the evening and was enjoyed by all as was Carr’s Hill Baptist church’s outstanding trio. A highlight of the program was Dan Wallin’s little daughter’s sing ing “A child of the King.” We noticed in the congregation persons from Dunn’s Rock Baptist church including the pastor, Rev. Emmett McCall and his wife, and persons from Cedar Mountain, East Fork Baptist Church and many other parts of our county. The fun and fellowship enjoyed during this Homecoming cannot be described. Others rendering inspi rational service were Rev. Jack Taylor, pastor, and Hubert Batson, Sunday School Superintendent. H. D. Club The Dunn’s Rock Community Home Demonstration Club meets today, Thursday, with Mrs. Robert K. Van Deusen at her home, Van Knoll. This meeting gets underway a 1 2 p. m. Achievement Day The displays set up by the var ious Home Demonstration clubs last Friday, Oct. 4th, in the Ma sonic Temple were the loveliest I’ve ever seen. The basket weaving, paper raffia, hand-made jewelry, Swedish darning, cake-decorating, the knitting and lovely dried ar rangements, and the floral ar rangements denoted much hard work. This community extends its thanks to Mrs. , Harry Golderer, chairman. Mrs. Ruby Corpening and Miss Anne Benson Priest for seeing that all was carried out in oiderly fashion. Score Sh'-ct" And Water The Executive committee of our community requests your full co operation in getting the annual Score sheets filled out and back to the proper person or persons on time. Recent rains have delayed the installation of the pump at, our community center. Mr. R. K. Van Deusen has assured us that as soon as the ground is dry enough, work will begin on this project. Fullbright Tells Of Importance Of National Letter Writing Week i Acting Postmaster Here Says | Uncensored Mail Is A Basic Freedom National Letter Writing week is again being celebrated in Brevard this week, Acting Postmaster Ver non Fullbright announces today. Commenting on the significance of National Letter Writing week, Mr. Fullbright pointed out that each year since 1938 this event has been observed as a reminder of the real meaning of a personal letter. Emphasizing the traditional sanc tity of the letter mail. Mr. Full bright reminded Brevard residents that one of the basic American freedoms is the uncensored trans mission of their first class mail. It is the most valuable possession of the citizens of a free country. “We all know the human im portance of letter writing,” Mr. Fullbright stated,” the way in which it holds scattered families to gether, of giving comfort and love and news to all the people of the land. But its value is immeasura bly greater than that. Its implica tions are almost infinite. “We in America have the privi lege of uncensored and unlimited means of communication.
