Edited By John I. Anderson Rambling With The | Sports Editor DISAPPOINTED .. . Football fans in Transylvania are naturally disappointed because the Blue Devils are not ’57 Blue Ridge confer ence champions. Their overall record is better; their offensive power greater; and, their star players more outstanding. Brevard averaged some 26 points per game, while their opponents had only a touch down average. This record is one of the best in North Carolina high school football this season, and local fans believe that Brevard could make a better showing against Murphy and down state. But as Bax ter Morris said on WPNF on Tuesday morning, “That’s the way that square ball bounces.” WIN TICKETS . . . Charles Bradburn and Mike Clark are the win ners of tickets to the Co-Ed theatre in our football contest this week. Both boys had nine winners out of the 11 games listed, and Charles missed the actual score of the Brevard - Enka game by only six points. He receives four tickets, while Mike, who had a score prediction that was nine points off, will get three by stopping in at The Times of fice. Four other persons had nine winners and they receive honorable mention. Their score prediction was not as close as the two winners. They were as follows: L. C. Poor, 26-6; Diane Allen, 27-12; Mrs. Leon McCall, 26-13; and, Terry Owen, 33-13. ENTER TODAY . . . Another big contest is planned this week. Before you put the paper down, try your luck. All you have to do is to guess the score of the Canton-Murphy game and to pick the winners of the other games listed. Bring your entry by The Times not later than 5:00 o’clock Friday afternoon. Remember, the first place winner gets four tickets to the Co-Ed theatre, while three will go to the second place winner. CANTON-VS. MURPHY Alabama Vs. Ga„ Tech Citadel Vs. VMI Florida Vs. Leading 7-0 after two periods of play, the Blue Devils opened up in the second half and completely baffled the Jets with a hard-charg ing line and several keen secondary watchdogs. After receiving the opening kick-off, the Jets were forced to punt, and Brevarcj took over on its own 10-yard line. After three plays and needing two yards for a first down, Brevard gambled and sent Phil Moody crashing through the line for five yards. From that point, the Blue Devils marched to the goal line to score, with Charles Winchester car rying over from the twe *. Cecil Low ery kicked the extra point. Walter McCullough, Enka’s de ceptive quarterback, kept his team’s hopes alive with beautiful hand offs to his halfbacks who car ried to the Brevard 10-yard line. But this drive came to a screeching halt when Moody intercepted a pass As the half ended, Brevard was marching toward the Enka goal, but the clock ran out before the lo cals could score again. Brevard made two serious threats in the opening moments of the third period, but the drives were halted by fumbles in Enka territory. Late in the third period, Jerry Cabe, who played a beautiful game on defense, broke through to block a punt of Jerry Ensley, and Win chester recovered on the Enka 45.
