Thanksgiving To Be Quietly Observed
In County, Churches Set Union Service
Thursday Will Be A Holiday.
Many Hunters Expected
On The Preserve*
Transylvanians will observe the
1957 Thanksgiving in the tradi
tional manner on Thursday.
There will be large family ga
therings, church services and the
day throughout the town and coun
ty will be a holiday.
All stores, town and county offi
ces, the bank and the post office
will be closed.
There will be no rural or city
deli\ery of mail, and according to
acting postmaster, Vernon Full- j
bright, the general delivery will be
opt n from 11:30 until 12 noon.
All town and county schools
will have a holiday on Thursday
and Friday, and Homecoming will
be celebrated at Brevard college
on Thanksgiving Day.
Hundreds of hunters from all
parls of Eastern America are here
for the annual deer and bear
hunts, and there will be a number
of private hunts on the various pre
serves of the county.

A Thanksgiving Union Service
will be held Thanksgiving morning
at 10:30 a. m., in the Brevard - Da
vidson River Presbyterian church.
All the churches of Brevard are
cooperating in this service and
their congregations are invited.

In Christmas Club
Members of the Christmas Sav
ings club of the Brevard Federal
Savings and Loan association
here will receive more than $20,
000 this week, Jerry Jerome, the
executive vice president, announ
ces. There are some 300 mem
bers of the ’57 club.
Checks will be mailed out this
week to all members, and the
1958 club will be started Friday,
Mr. Jerome states.
Last year approximately $20,
000 was paid out to members of
the Christmas Savings club here.
Mr. Jerome says: “Be sure to
get on our membership list when
it opens this week and be assured
of a merrier Christmas next
year.”

center will be built adjacent to Ra
dio Station WPNF, and construc
tion is expected to get underway
in about three or four weeks after
approval of the bids at Raleigh and
in Washington.
The money for the project has
already been appropriated by the
county, state and the federal gov
ernment.

in Transylvania county for the
various charities.
The director points out that
many outside concerns which
do business in Transylvania have
contributed to the local fund.

Democracy contest in Western
North Carolina was held here Tues
day afternoon and evening, with
Bobby Hoyle, president of the Bre
vard Jaycees, presiding.
The winner, Don Printz, of Ashe
ville, will represent this area in
the state finals in Forest City on
Dec. 7th. The announcement of the
WNC winner and the details on
the state finals were made by Lee
Kanipe, North Carolina Chairman
of the Voice of Democracy, of For
est City.

OLE SANTA CLAUS will come to Brevard Friday
afternoon riding a lop the fire truck behind the Brevard
high school band. He will have candy for all his little
friends, and he cordially invites them to come to Brevard
to see him. The event, which is sponsored by the mer
chants division of the''chamber of commerce, officially
marks the opening of the ’57 Christmas shopping season,
and the multi-colored lights in the business section will
be turned on at that time.

tion Information”, a program ini
tiated two years ago at the Nav
al Academy, Annapolis, Md. The
program was established to main
tain a high level of interest in the
Naval Academy, as well as the
Navy. While on his Christmas
leave, he will show the film “The
Annapolis Story” and distribute
pamphlets, while visiting various
schools, civic organizations and
clubs in this area.

classes of ’37, ’41, ’45, ’49, ’53, and
’57 will meet from 12:00 to 1:00.

and Taylor Hall will observe open
house from 2:00 to 4:00. At 4:00
a basketball game will be played in
the gym. During the Half-time ac
tivities, the Homecoming Queen

ters to Santa Claus and to put them
in special mail boxes at Pearlman’s,

The Christmas Seal sale of the
Transylvania county tuberculosis
committee, which began here oa
November 15th, has grossed $503.50
through November 22nd, Miss
Marie J. Strasser, treasurer of the'
committee, announced today.
Miss Jeanette Austin, Christmas
Seal sale chairman, expressed con
fidence that the amount necessary
to provide one half the cost of an
X-ray machine for the new Health
center would be raised. She urged
everybody to answer their Christ
mas Seal letter as soon as possible
in order that more definite plans
