From time to time, the Transylvania chapter of the American Red Cross sends entertainment to the veterans at Moore General hospital, Swannanoa. Recently, Brevard’s Gil Coan was a tremendous hit with the patients. For some 30 minutes Gil told of his experiences in 10 years of professional baseball, and then for another 30 minutes he conducted a question and answer program, during which many prizes were awarded. Red Cross officials here are to be highly commended for the services they render to the disabled veterans. This is another example of some of the fine work of the Red Cross during peacetime. TURNING PRO? . . .Several local golfers, and especially those with whom he was playing, suggested to A1 Perkins that he should turn professional last week end. It seems that one of his opponents, Wayne Bradburn, was on the No. 5 green, which is a par five hole, in two shots, and Perkins was off to the left in the trap. With deadly accuracy, he slammed the ball in the hole for an eagle, and, you guessed it: Brad missed the easy one. But we understand that the school superinten dent got “back in the ball game”, as he usually does, on the next hole. Incidentally, Bradburn is hoping to be able to vacation at the same time the National Lefthanders' tournament is held. PLANNING LEAGUE . . . Marshall Gillespie and Charles Link are planning a bowling league for both men and women at the bowl ing center this summer. If you're interested, contact them. OPENING . . . PATRONIZE OUR ADVERTISERS Gardner Leaving Brevard, Former Grid Star, Duke BY SPORTS EDITOR “Golly, I hate leaving Bre vard,” Sam Gardner, who has been doing public relations work here with the new Du Pont sili con plant, told The Times this week. Next Monday Gardner will as sume his duties with another new Du Pont project in Florida. And there are many persons here who also regret his leaving. Many of us remember when he was a football great at Duke uni versity on the same team with Jack Alexander, editor of the Olin Mathieson news and em ployment supervisor at Pisgah Forest. It was in the fall of 1935, when Gardner and Alexander wrecked Carolinas dreams of going to the Rose Bowl. Gardner’s vicious tackles kept Carolina from gain ing, and Alexander quarterback ed Duke to a 25-0 victory. KIMZEY AWARDED BS DEGREE. IINC Outstanding Record Is Not ed.
