Sympathy Our hearts were saddened at the passing of Uncle Abney McCall, who died on Monday, March 9th, at the home of a sister, Mis. Floyd Brown, at Quebec. Our deepest sympathy goes out to the relatives aasd friends of Mr. McCall. Mr. and Mins Vardirey McCall und family and Daniel and David W. McCall attended the Gospel singing at Carson’s Creek Bmptist church Sunday night. Vets Of World War I To Meet Janus E. Dayton, of Asheville, senior vice oomimtafider of the North Carolina Department, Veter ans of World War 1 of the U.S.A., will he the chief speaker at a rally of World War I veterans in Polk and surrounding counties Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock here in Columbus, at the Polk county courthouse. Headquarters of the World War I organization is located in Wash ington, D. C., while the state head quarters is located in Salisbury. During the 85th Congress the group of World War I veterans was char tered by the Congress. Since that time their membership has almost doubled with more than 1800 lo cal barracks, with 106 in North Carolina. By action .of the 6th national convention in Springfield, Illinois, Sept. 14-17, they have been man dated to seek a pension for their group which is now averaging 64 years of age. Approved for consid eration by the 86th Congress is H. R. 1181, sponsored by Rep. James E. VanZandt of Pennsylvania which would increase present benefits for the veterans of 1917-18 and at the same time increase the present in come limitations. Dayton, Stated today, that count less thousands of World War I vet erans are dependent upon rela tives for the bare necessities of life. Others are finding it difficult to compete in the present day la bor market due to age and physical handicaps. The time has come when something should be done for the “Forgotten generations of veterans”. Dayton added.
