These Days Or - Behind The News From Washington By John Chamberlain The GOP’s Only Bet is Idealism During the thirty-day morator ium on politics, the Democrats m T' ft; to speak tor their own future in terms of the ebullient symb.lism of Lyndon Johnson's activities. The future of the Re publican Party, on the ether hand, lias been left to the volu ble conjecturing c.f people who wouldn't be caught dead pulling a GOP lever on election day. To listen to these people, Bar ry Go'dwrier is through as a Republican force. Can’t win the Scuth or the West. Never did stand a chance in the industrial Northeast. To make a fight against Lvncion Johnson, the Re publican? have got to find a man who locks, acts and dresses like cn Ivy Leaguer. He must be a TV marvel, able to give with the repartee. He must have wit. In brief, he must be a Republi can Kennedy. So who is proposed? Gover nor Scranton was mentioned quite early during the thirty-day moratorium as having a “Kenne dy image,” though none of the vocal columnistic Scranton well wishers (Democrats for the most part) came forward with specific examples of his wit and repartee. One could see him giv ing with a wisecrack in response to a witty Kennedy jibe. And cf course, Goldwater would haw a philosophy of voluntary wel farism to oppose to a Democrati Party commitment to comptii spry welfarism. The truth is that nobody can beat Lyndon Johnson in a fuzzed-up campaign. He is a bel ter manN on the telephone, a better wheeler-dealer when it comes to workable compromises, a better man at driving a tan dem team, than any non-conser vative the Republicans can hope tc offer. To defeat such a man, the Re publicans have only one thing to fall back on, and that is a basic conservative idealism. Henderson P-TA meet ing Monday evening, December 23. e. A. Hoyle, of Cullowhee, gave a reading of Dickens ‘ Christinas Carol" that was ap preciated and enjoyed by all present. Others on the program were John P. Owen and Mrs. Hyatt, whose class also sang Christinas songs joined by their parents. We wish for Mrs. Annie Doug las a speedy recovery from the virus that has her confined to <he Transylvania Community hospital in Brevard. A son of Gust Lissau camped in his trailer here in Sapphire lor a few days, but found the weather too cold for him. Mr. and Mrs. E. 0. Hansen and sen, Eugene, were dinner guests cf the John I). Smiths Friday evening. Other guests were Mr. iii.d Mrs. Jack McCall, Clarence Bowen, and Miss Sandra Smith. We are sorry to learn that Mrs. E. B. Meyers is in the hospital in Miami, Flrida. following another operation on her back. upon himself to sidetrack Robert Taft in 1952, present such an image? Knowing what the Taft ites and the Goldwaterites think of him, I wculd doubt it. Can Nixcn ccmo back as a conserva tive alternative to Lyndon John son? He might, but he isn’t con vincing anybody by ostentatious ly net reining. Romney might hammer out a good conservative line as an ex-industrialist, but he is too busy being governor of Michigan to do it on a national scale. The more the Republicans search for a man to beat Lyndon Jchnscn by agreeing with Lyn den Johnson on the issues, thr mere reason there is to vote fo' Lyndcn Johnson. Why swap . known “can-do” horse in mid stream for a nag of purely con jeetural ability? But if the Re publicans can offer an idealistic conservatism as an alternative to Jehnson's commitment to basi. New Frontier philosophy, they might yet make a fight of it. An estimated 100,000 Ameri cans have Til in its active infecti ous form but don’t know it.
