IL» PRICE 10c ■k 24 PAGES TODAY * PUBLISHED WEEKLY Brevard Fire Department Now Equipped With New Modern Tanker-Truck The Brevard fire depart ment, which is recognized as one of the finest volunteer de partments in the state, now has a new 2,000 gallon tanker fire truck ready for use. While this truck is ideal foi fighting rural fires, k is alsc *4 adapted for urban use as watei is available immediately upor the truck’s arrival at a blaze. In the meantime, lines can be laid from the other trucks. The new and modern tank er-truck can pump more than 200 gallons of water per min ute from ponds or streams. H is also equipped with a can vas reservoir which can store some 1,800 gallons of water. The new Engine No. 4 was pur chased with donations from hun dreds of citizens in Brevard and Transylvania county. F. L. “Buck" McCall is chair man of the finance committee,' and he expresses sincere ap preciation to all persons, clubs, industries and others who have given to the campaign. Many summer residents were contributors, he states. Actually, a total of 87,892.60 has been paid on the truck, leaving a balance due of some 8400.09. Members of the local fire de partment have given more than 600 man-hours in assemblyin the tanker on the bed, paintin the truck, etc. The six - months’ drive for the truck began last October, and Mr. McCall feels that the work has been done in record time. Simultaneously, the de partment has continued its weekly training sessions, and schools for firemen from throughout Western North Carolina have been held here at the fire training center (Cape Canaveral) on the Camp Illahee road. Community Sunrise service on college campus at 6:00 —Turn to rage roar Meeting Is Held TV A Now Making Preliminary Field Studies, French Broad Three survey parties from the Tennessee Valley Auth ority are engaged in three pre liminary field studies of the French Broad river, the ter rain, stream flow, etc. Similar surveys will be made in Henderson, Buncombe, Hay wood and Madison counties. The teams are expected to complete their surveys in Tran sylvania in about two weeks. According to Paul Morris, chief of the Maps and Survey branch of TV A, the teams are collecting basic information on the possibility of small deten tion dams for flood control. ' However, this does not mean that we have plans for building these dams," Mr. Morris told The Times Wednesday morning. The steering committee of the Western North Carolina Planning commission met with officials of TVA last Friday in Asheville and heard reports on the study and on the over all survey that is now under way. The commission will continue to study the reports from the Hat In Ring Siniard Enters The Race For County Commissioner Hale “Guis” Siniard, Jr. today announces his candidacy for the office of county commissioner of Transylvania county subject to the will of the voters in the May 30th Democratic primary. A native of Transylvania, ilr. Siniard has for 17 years been a partner with his brother, W. O. “Bud” Siniard, in Siniard Broth ers Grading and Paving Company of Brevard. He is a graduate of Brevard high school and served during World War II in the United States Navy. Waldrop, chairman of the Republican executive com mittee.
