MARIE BROWN LITTLE RIVER — The Com munity club held its regular ■meeting Thursday, February jfith. ^ Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pierson spent this week end with Mr. Pierson’s mother, who is in the hospital in Brunswick, Ga. Little River Homemakers club met Wednesday, February 15th at the home of Mrs. Rob ert Smith. Mrs. Paul Lollis showed film strips on cancer. Miss Jean Childers gave a dem onstration on window cornice boards. Sixteen members and (wo visitors were present. Reverend and Mrs. R. D. Gregg are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smith and fam ily. The Y.W.A.’s observed Focus Week last week and were in charge of the midweek prayer service. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Mc Crary and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Brown and Wayne spent Sun day with Mrs. McCrary’s niece and family, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Robinson, near Burnsville. Mr. Fred Roach passed away Saturday, February 19th at Mis «'on hospital in Asheville. We ish to extend our deepest sympathy to the family. Tim and Eric Kilstrom, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kilstrom, will enter Brevard hospital for tonsillectomies Thursday, fhf Mrs. Ruth Nicholson is im proving after a stay in Brevard hospital. Reverend Broadus Wall, who served as interim pastor here, is in Memorial Mission hospital for surgery. Miss Sherry Smith will enter Memorial Mission hospital on Tuesday for surgery. Gor don, 20, son of Mrs. Gazella M. Pierson, route 1, Penrose com pleted a light-vehicle driver course at Ft. Dix, N. J., Feb. 3. During the course, he was trained in the operation and maintenance of military ve hicles up to and including the two and one-half ton truck. In struction was also given in the operation of the internal com bustion engine and chassis as sembly. Pvt. Gordon is the son of Fred B. O’Connell has been appointed vice president for employee relations of Olin Mathieson Chemical Corpora tion, a new position, it was an nounced by Gordon Grand, pres ident and chief executive of ficer. Mr. O’Connell, previously Olin’s director of industrial re lations, has been active in the field of labor law and industrial relations for nearly 30 years as practicing lawyer, government official, management consult ant and corporate executive. A graduate of Fordham Col lege and of Fordham Law School, he was associated with the New York law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore for several years before becoming manager of labor relations for Standard Brands, Inc., in 1946. During the Korean War he was deputy director of industrial re lations for the U. S. Depart ment of Defense. In 1955 he became director of labor relations for The Grey hound Corporation in Chicago, and the following year he be came a consultant with Anna M. Rosenberg Associates in New York. He joined Olin in 1957 as assistant labor counsel, became labor counsel in 1959 and di rector of industrial relations in 1963. Mr. O’Connell, a member of the New York Bar, is a mem ber of the Section on Labor Relations Law of the American Bar Association and co-chair man of its Committee on An titrust and Labor Relations Law. He also is a member of the Industial Relations Com mittee of the National Associa tion for Manufactuers, and the Industrial Relations Society of New York. Much Rain At Cathey's Creek By MRS. KEN RILEY CATHEY’S CREEK — The past week has been a very wet one in these parts. The sun shine will surely be welcome. Friends in this section were very saddened to learn of the sudden death of Elzie Barton, a lifelong resident of the Ca they’s Creek section. He was laid to rest last Sunday after noon in the Cathey’s Creek Cemetery. We wish to express our heart felt sympathy to Mr. Crawford W. Freeman on the passing of his mother, Mrs. Alice Free man, of Hendersonville, last week. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald L. Parris and Lynn, of Alexadria, Va., spent the week end here visit ing relatives. The Parrises were celebrating their 11th wedding anniversary. Khi Hollingsworth, of Pisgah Forest, visited Mr. and Mrs. Al vin Fowler and family on Sun day. He also visited his uncle, Henry McKinney, of Rosman. Fred McKinney and son, Lewis Alton, accompanied Mr. Holl ingsworth to visit Mr. McKin ney. He is reported to be im proving at this time. Miss Annie Mae Fowler, James Charles Clayton and pa trolman Joseph Maze Waldrop all celebrated birthdays on the 12th and 13th. Much happiness is expressed. Ray Nicholson and Albert McKinney visited John Merrill in the Little River section on Saturday. They report him to be in his 80’s and very spry and able to go anywhere he chooses. Mrs. Vivian Barton has re turned to her home after a brief stay in the local hospital. She is much improved. Elks To Observe "Past Exalted Rulers Night" Next Tuesday Bob Rhyne, exalted ruler of Brevard Elks, is inviting all members of the Order to be his guest at a dinner prior to the meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 28th. He has designated the eve ning as “Past Exalted Ruler’s Night,” and dinner will be served at 6:30 o’clock. The meeting will begin at 8:00. Mr. Rhyne is hoping for 100 per cent attendance. At the meeting, Past exalted rulers will take over the chairs for the opening, business and closing portions of the meeting. Mr. L. C. Case, III was elected President; Ken Wilson, Vice President, Jack Breedlove, Secretary and Treasurer, Ann Fisher, Junior President and Mr. and Mrs. Shannon Rhodes chairmen for the scrapbook. Mr. Case appointed several committees to help carry out the club’s goals for the coming year. The main goal for the coming year is to continue to make our community a better place in which to live. The winning of first place in Western North Carolina in the Community Development Program speakes for itself of the wonderful job done by J. A. Wilde, former President, and his fellow officers. The Lake Toxaway Volunteer Fire Department met January 24th and elected officers. They are as follows: President, Bill McNeely; Vice President, J. A. Kilde; Secretary, Jack Hall; Treasurer, Bill McKinney; board of directors, Herbert Fisher, Allen Penniman, and Walter McNeely; fire chief, Bill McNeely; first assistant, Tom mie Owen; second assistant, El vin Galloway; communication chief, Eric Hansen; police chief, Columbus Burrell. A working was held February 4th, on the building. The W. M. U.’s of North Tox away Baptist church met Feb ruary 6th at the home of Mrs. Louise Case. Mrs. Case and Mrs. Shannon Rhodes presented the very interesting progam on evangelism. On February 11th, the W. M. U.’s visited Rev. Shannon Rhodes, pastor of the North Toxaway Baptist church, and each lady took a dish of food. Rev. Rhodes has just returned Club Elects New Officers from a week in Greneville hos pital. A covered dish supper was held February 7th in the com munity building with approxi mately 25 families attending. A business meeting was held af terward. A regular meeting night of every first of the month was established with a covered dish supper to be held before hand. Eoy Scout troop 710. with Glennis McCall and Bud Case as leaders, enjoyed a camping trip on Saturday night, Febru ary 11th. 12 boys attended by seven adults were on the out ing. The boys with their lead ers attended church as a group the next morning. After their regular meeting February 13th, Mr. McCall and Mr. Case took the boys to see the movie, “Follow Me Boys” in Brevard. At their meeting February 20th, the boys had the art of knot tieing demonstrated to them by Vernon Bishop and Ken Wilson. Eight boys will have board of reviews Thursday night. The troop was recharted for the coming year with 15 boys on the new charter. > 40 girls and three adult lead; ers met with Mrs. Dot McIntosh Monday afternoon to organize girl scouts in the Lake ToxawaJ community. Another meeting will be held February 27th at the community club. Any girls, age 7 through 15£ interested in joining should contact Mrs. Barbara Ann Cas^ Also any adults interested itt being as leader should contact Mrs. Case. The 11 sons of Mr. and Mr$ Conrad Hamburg of Gering, Nebraska, amassed a total o£ 68 years of military service. 01 this total, 11 were in combat with seven brothers serving im WWI1 and three in the Koreai conflict.
