Stiles Is Now Serving In Vietnam, First Marines Marine Lance Corporal Verrel D. Stiles, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Stiles, of 26 Short St., Brevard, is in Da Nang, Vietnam serving as a member of “A” Company, Seventh Engineer Battalion, First Marine Division. His battalion supports the division through road and building construction, and the laying of land mines. Engi neers are also trained in the use of explosives and demo litions. In addition, the battalion is conducting a vigorous civic action program aimed at help ing the Vietnamese people better themselves socially and economically. Several Additional Adult Education Courses Offered The Department of Vocational Agriculture at Brevard senior high school will offer several additional courses in Adult Ed ucation, beginning on Monday night, March 6th, at 7:00 p.m. For those who desire to gain a working knowledge of com mon shrubs and flowers and how to use them to the best advantage in beautifying your home, an Ornamental Horticul ture course will be offered for men and women. A group of low-income Ma con County, North Carolina far mers. aided by Agricultural Ex tension Agents, the local com munity action agency, and the North Carolina Fund, have formed a cooperative that built a processing plant for local pro duce and improved farming methods resulting in increased incomes of up to $2,000 per farmer. On National FFA Week By - GARY HAMLIN Vocational agriculture stud ents in Brevard high school are joining Future Farmers of America members though out ther nation in activities to focus attention on the im portance of agriculture du ing National F.F.A. Week, February 18-25. “Agriculture — Strength of America” is this year’s F.F.A. Week Theme. The hoys are undertaking a campaign to in form the general public about the importance of the agricul tural industry to America, the growing need for farming, and of the numerous and wide varie ty of opportunities that exist in the broad field of agriculture for young men who have a background of farm experience and training. “We have had such an abun dance of food in America that people are taking agri culture for granted”, said Randal J. Lyday, vocational agricultural teacher and F. F.A. advisor. “Actually farm ing is now and always has been our largest and most vital industry, and it is be coming increasingly import ant with our expanding pop ulation. In our area particu larly, most of the businesses and most of the jobs, are bas ically dependent upon farms for their existence. Take away the farms and for all practical purposes you would destroy the entire communi ty. The Brevard FFA Chapter has 78 members. The National Future Farm ers Organization has approx imately 450,000 members with 9,000 local chapters in the 50 states and Puerto Rico. Future Farmers choose the week of George Washington’s birthday each year for the ob servation of National FFA Week. Although usually recog nized as a Revolutionary War General and our first Presi dent. Washington’s first love was the farm. He was one of the first in the nation to prac tice contour planting, crop ro tations, fertilization and other soil conservation and improve ment methods.
