I BEHIND THE SCENES ^HallifiVoacL lit ****** By HARRISON CARROLL * * * ¥ ¥ ¥ NEWMAN GETS PAID FOR THIS? ROBBERY • HOLLYWOOD—The nerve of Paul Newman, accepting a sal ary of thousands a week to play love scenes with one of Italy's most beautiful stars, Sylvia Koscina! On the set of Universal’s “M eanwhile, i Far From the J Front,” I I watch director ■ Jack Smight I film a shot I Where Paul I and the blonde I Sylvia are ■ trading Kisses on a big, four- * * poster bed. Sylvia Koscina The volup tuous Sylvia is clad in a re vealing negligee. Paul, with more clothes on, is as noncha lant as if he were buying a ham burger at a drivein. This movie is a World War II comedy. Paul is a goof-up American private, but a great escape artist. B’ive U.S. gen erals have been captured by the Italians. Paul’s superiors have decked him out in the uniform of a one star general and have let him be captured so he can help the other offi cers escape. War, in this case, is not par ticularly hell. The officers are imprisoned in the villa of an Italian countess, the lovely Kos cina. The scene takes place in the fancy bedroom assigned to Paul. He is lolling on the big bed, with an embroidered orange spread. Suddenly the head panel of the bed slides down, and there, in a secret passage back of the bed is the sexy Sylvia. Paul helps her through the opening onto the bed. He and Sylvia already have established a rappaport. “I'm leaving tomorrow,” she explains softly. "I thought it would be better if I were gone when you escaped. So I have come to say goodbye.” He kisses her on the back of 'the neck. He pushes her back on !the bed and continues to nuzzle and nibble at her. “Tell me how to say good Distributed by King WAR IN THIS CASE ISN'T REALLY HELL bye,” he pleads. “You must have said it be fore,” laughs Sylvia. “Never to a countess” re plies Paul. “There must be some civilized and elegant way to say goodbye to a coun tess.” She twists around, pushes him back on the bed and lowers her lips to his. "Yes, there is,” she agrees, “and, believe me, Harry, there is nothing on earth more civil ized—or elegant." Director Smight calls for a cut. “Just act as if you were en joying it, Paul,” he counsels. “This is the Disney version. Next, we will shoot the Italian version, and then the French version.” I am standing next to co producer Leo Fuchs. “There is no war in this picture,” he says. “There are no battle scenes. Nobody gets killed. This is just an incident that happens to take place in World War II. I don’t believe in those ‘war is fun’ type of films. This is an out and out comedy.” I ask Paul if he ever has ap peared before in an out and out comedy. “Yeah,” he replies. “ ‘Rally Around the Flag’ was one.” They introduce me to Sylvia. She is a honey blonde with green eyes and a superb figure. She has done about 50 films in Europe (the last was "Dead lier Than the Male ) but this is her first H ollywood film. Her English, is very good, but she re hearsed for two weeks be fore the start of the picture to make it better. Paul Newman "I feel like C hristopher Columbus,” she told me. “I am discovering America, and I hope that the American, public will discover me.” Don’t worry doll, they will.
