The Brevard Little Theater
will hold its annual meeting
and banquet on Saturday, May
6, 1967 in the American Le
gion building.
There will be a social hour
from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m., din
ner at 7:00 p.m., and dancing
from 9:00 p.m. to 1.00 a.m.
Admission is $3.00 per person
and reservations may be made

Square Dance
Members, husbands and

E.S.A. recently enjoyed a
“Country Style” Square dance
at Camp Straus.
The group danced to a live
band as Jim Hawkins did
the calling.

ENGAGED — Mrs. Sebron Edward Varner, of
Huntsville, Alabama, formerly of Brevard, an
nounces the engagement of her daughter, Miss
Mary Ann Varner, to Jimmy Anthony Walker, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Carter Walker, of Hunts
ville, Alabama. She is also the daughter of the
late Mr. Varner. Miss Varner is a graduate of
Huntsville high school and is a sophomore at the
University of Alabama at Tuscoloosa. She is a
member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. Mr.
Walker is a graduate of Huntsville high school and
is a junior at the University of Alabama, where he
is a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. The wed
ding will be an event of June 17th at the First
Methodist church in Huntsville.

year focus on “New Dimen
sions—New Goals,” with the
1966-67 program, “The Nur
ture of Creativity,” illustrated
by exhibits brought by the
individual chapters.

AAUW will hold its monthly
meeting on Tuesday, May 9 at
8:00 in the home of Misses
Gail and Mary Scott.
Mrs. William Overholt will
speak to the group on “Pre
Communist Chinese Culture.”
Along with the program, Mrs.
Overholt will show a variety
of Chinese artifacts.

The 19th District of the
American Legion Auxiliary
held its annual meeting April
25th in Gaither’s Rhododen
dron room.
Mrs. Charles F. Gold, Sr.,
District President, of Ruther
fordton, presided over the
meeting. The Brevard Unit
No. 88, hostess for the occas
ion, received delegates from
all the units in the 19th Dis
trict.
Mrs. A. E. Norville, of the
Brevard unit, opened the
meeting with the invocation.
Greetings to the group were
extended by Mayor Raymond
F. Bennett after which a pa
triotic musical program was
given by Mrs. James Sanders.
Mrs. Edwin L. Kay, Depart
ment President, delivered the
major address.
The District meeting goes
to Forest City next spring
with Mrs. Ethel B. Owen as
the new District President
and Mrs. Margaret Head, al
ternate, both of Brevard.
Following deliberate dis
cussion, the body voted to
send the following telegram
to Congressman Roy Taylor:
“American Legion Auxiliary

sonville, Rutherfordton, Spin
dale in meeting today com
mend your stand on flag
burning and urge your con
tinued efforts in maintaining
nursing care unit at Oteen.”
A buffet luncheon was
served at the close of the
meeting.
AAUW Has
Workshop,
Hickory
The Hickory branch of the
AAUW for the Western North
Carolina AAUW branches at
Lenoir-Rhyne College last Sat
urday, April 29th during a
workshop concerning ways to
develop the program areas for
the coming year.
The topic for consideration
are: The Politics of Public
Education; Testing Values in
a Changing Society; Society’s
Reflection in the Arts; and
The Growing Gap Between
Rich Nations and Poor Na
tions.
Dr. Leslie Syron led a panel
discussion dealing with the
development of the programs
that AAUW has been concern
ed with through the past
years. Dr. Helen Reed, Direc
tor of a laboratory school at
the University of Eastern
Kentucky, spoke on the grow
ing gaps between the affluent
nations and the poverty na
tions and suggested ways the
AAUW could help in trying
to solve this problem.

branch who attended the
workshop were: Dr. Roberta
Riegel, Mrs. Eugene Baker,
Mrs. E. K. McLarty, and Mrs.
Walter Holland.

Club Meets
The Brevard Wednesday
club met on April 26th with
Mrs. Alex Kizer as hostess.
The meeting opened with
the reciting of the club col
lect, followed by roll call and
minutes.
The treasurer, Mrs. Gordon
Sprott, gave her report and
the president, Mrs. Kapp,
gave a resume of the resolu
tions to be presented at the
State Federation meeting at
Pinehurst.
These concerned safety, VD
disases, the needs of youth,
adult education, the advance
ment school at Winston-Salem
and to urge our State Legisla
ture to support this school
and other educational agen
cies.
Mrs. E. K. McLarty dis
cussed the program for the
next club year “The Making
of America.”
The club enjoyed an inter
esting program on “News
Magazines” given by Mrs.
Robert Caldwell, featuring
‘Time”, first published in
1923, and “Life”, being launch
ed in 1936.
The next meeting will be
with Mrs. Harry Bobst on
Wednesday, May 10th.
