Daytime highs are expected to average in the low and mid i die 70’s in the mountains, and i in the mid-80’s elsewhere. | Nighttime lows will average in the 50’s. Precipitation will total three quarters to one inch or more, occurring as rain Thursday or Friday. Temperatures during the past week in Brevard averaged 79 and 59, with a high of 85 on Sunday and low of 52 on Thurs day. Rainfall totalled 3.55 inches during the week, 1.95 inches falling during Tuesday. Landt, president of the North Carolina Associa tion of Realtors, will be the giiest speaker at the Brevard Board of Realtors’ meeting next Wednesday. Mr. Landt is from Raleigh where he is president of Cam eron - Brown company, mor tage bankers with offices in North Carolina. South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee. Mr. Landt has held state, regional and national positions with real estate and appraisal organizations. He is married and has four children. Mr. Landt will speak on “Un solicited Legislative Opinion,” a subject which should be of interest to all business men with real estate interests. James Gaither, president of the Brevard Board of Realtors, has made arrangements for the meeting to be held in Gaith er’s rhododendron room at noon on Wednesday, August 30th. The meeting is to be a dutch -—Torn to Page Six Freshman To Arrive Sunday At The College A record number of entering freshmen will descend on the campus of Brevard College Sunday as Orientation and Reg istration gets under way. The College expects 365 new students to arrive on the cam pus beginning at 9:00 Sunday morning. Students may enter the dormitories any time dur ing the day. President and Mrs. E. K. Mc Larty. Jr., will hold an infor mal reception for parents, visi tors and students at 2:00 in the Faculty Lounge of the Beam Administration Building. Sunday’s activities will close with a service of worship at 7:30 p. m. in the Brevard Meth odist church. Dr. McLa^ty*'will bring the message. Freshmen will undergo a series of tests on Monday and Tuesday. In addition, they will meet with faculty advisors to plan their schedules prior to registration on Wednesday morning- A variety of activi ties directed by student lead ers ie planned for the evening hours. The cut-over is set for Saturday night, Sept. 2nd, and local tele phone subscribers will be able to do direct distance dialing the following morning. According to Charles Pickelsimer, the vice president and general man ager of the Citizens Telephone company, who can be noted observing at the left, “dialing your own station-to-station calls is the fastest and cheapest method of calling long distance.” (Times Staff Photo) Monday Will Be First Full Day Of Classes Schools in Brevard and Transylvania county will open on Friday of this week. A rec ord enrollment is expected, and Brevard College, which is now beginning the new term, is also filled to capacity. In the Transylvania school system, students will report for a half day Friday, and the first full day of school is set for next Monday, August 28th. On Friday morning, the stu dents will register, receive books, assignments, etc. The school buses will run, but the lunchrooms will not open until Monday. Teachers met Wednesday morning at Brevard senior high school, and a program by the Brevard band opened the meeting. A general fee of $1.00 for each student, grades 1 through 12 will be needed, and insurance, which is optional, win be $2.00 for each student. Parents are requested to send this money with the students on Friday, the ath. At Junior High Principal John Huggins an nounces that junior high stud ents will be introduced to their teachers on Friday morning at 8:30 a. m. All 7th Grade students should meet at the fountain, while the 8th Grade and Special Ed ucation students meet at the front steps of the main build in. In case of rain, 7th Grade will meet in the cafeteria and —Turn to Page Six Damages High Heavy Rains Causing Much Flooding Throughout County Bottomlands in Transylvania are flooding and many rural roads are covered with water because of the heavy rains since Sunday morning. Many, many residents of the community are reporting flood ed basements and leaking roofs as the rains continue to come down. And the weatherman does not foresee a let-up in the heavy shower activity until later this weekend. At presstime on Wednesday, nearly 10 inches of rain have fallen here since Sunday morn ing. Daily rainfalls recorded at the official weather sttaion at WPNF are as follows: . Sunday—.52, Monday—.87, Tuesday—3.92, and Wednes day. untQ noon—4.01. Harry F. Morgan, Bosnian’s weatherman, also reports that approximately 10 inches have fallen there this week. Flooding is occurring In areas along the French Broad rives* between Brevard and The flood stage at Beaman is S feet, and at one time FrendTlsiead "wm^at 9*49 feet. The following roads in Trans ylvania were reported closed a presstime: Island Ford road, Wilson road Merrill lane, Hannah Ford road Old US Highway 64 (east) an< Eagles Nest road. Primary highways in the county were still open at noon Wednesday, and they are ex pected to remain open as the rainfall decreases. These roads include: Brevard to Rosman i Brevard to Greenville Brevard to Asheville and to t Hendersonville. Flash flooding will occur along the French Broad today [ and tomorrow, and residents [ along the river are warned of impending danger. Already much damage has been reported to crops in Transylvania, and as the rains continue, the losses will be greater and greater. Fences, farm roads and smaller bridges are also suff ering extensive damages. Plans In Making Dr. Milton Massey Heads Upcoming United Fund Drive (Editor’s Note: This is the second article in a series of four on our local United Fund organization naming the “Ac tion Committee Chairmen” and their committee mens hers. Last week the article highlighted Budget and Ad ham and his committee.) Dr. Milton Massey, promi nent dentist, heads the 1*68 United Fund for Transylvania county. Dr. Massey was named to this important assignment early this spring. He and his committee mem bers along with the United Fund officers and executive committee have been planning toward the October campaign for months.
